.Application September 10, 1931 Serial No. 562,080
2 Claims.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for applying a film-coating to rolls, the particular object of the invention is to provide means adapted to apply photographically 15: sensitive film-to a printing roll.
Great difficulty has been experienced in applying sensitized emulsion to the cylindrical surface of a printing roll due to the fact that in customary procedure either bubbles are formed in 2 0. the emulsion or the emulsion is not uniformly distributed. For example, if the roller is dipped in an emulsion bath, upon its removal the emulsion will drain to a thickened longitudinal area particularly when the emulsion is quick drying as in the case of a shellac-base emulsion, andv spinning of the roll does not cure the difiiculty. The application of emulsion by air brush has not been found practical nor the application of the" emulsion by hand brush. In both the latter 2 0.methods, bubbles are formed and a smooth, uniformly thick film is not produced.
By the present invention, rolls may be provided with a uniformly thick, smooth surface emulsion film free from bubbles and having uni- '2 form adherence to the roll at all points.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the cup and carrier, longitudinally of the roll held in register with the cup.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 44, 35 Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a base member provided with spared'vertical plates 2,
each carrying a bearing boss 3 for a drive shaft 4.
Drive shaft 4 may carry an idler pulley 5 and a #Q-drive pulley 6 each adapted to receive a belt '7 leading to a suitable source of power.
The top plate 8 of the base member is formed with a plurality of apertured bosses 9 adapted to receive rods 10 which project upwardly through 1 suitable bosses 11 in a cap plate 12. In pracwhich is best shown in Fig. 2.
.may have a plurality of apertured bosses 22 Projecting upwardly from base member 1 may beplaced a conical support 15 adapted to receive the hollow end of the roller 16 which is to be coated. At the upper end of the roll is disposed a second cone 17 carried by a shaft 18 which is threaded within a boss 19 of cap plate 12, the shaft having secured thereto a lever 20 by means of which rotation may be imparted to the shaft for lowering or raising the cone.
Adapted for vertical movement relatively to rods 10, is a cup carriage 21, the construction of The cup carriage adapted to receive a plurality of rods 10. In addition, the cup carriage is provided with the spaced threaded bosses23 each of which receives a screw 24, each of the latter carrying at its lower end a bevelled gear 25 in mesh with a bevelled gear 26 on shaft 4, whereby rotation of the shaft will cause the cup carrier to be moved longitudinally of the roll 16 held by cones 15 and 17. v
At its center, the cup carrier supports a cup 27 which is provided with a central aperture at 28 of sufiicient diameter to receive roll 16 or one of larger diameter, or, smaller diameter.
Means are provided for sealing opening 28 against the .leakage of liquid held in the cup, said means comprising a rubber or other suitable diaphragm 29 having an aperturerless than the diameter of the roll so that the diaphragm will be given close contact with the surface of the roll, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the cup carrier in intermediate position with respect to roll 16, the cup 9 carrier having been moved downwardly from the top of the roll so that the liquid 30 therein has been spread as a thin film 31 upon the roll by direct contact therewith of the body of liquid 30 within the cup.
Diaphragm 29 may be held in position at the base of the cup by a ring 32 secured to the cup in any suitable manner as by the screws 33. The diaphragms and holding rings may readily be removed and replaced with those of difierent sizes in order to accommodate rolls of various diameters.
By the apparatus above described, means is provided for holding a pool of liquid adjacent to and surrounding the roll and for relatively moving the roll and pool-holding means. The speed of movement can be regulated in accordance with the'nature of the liquid in cup 27. When photographic emulsion having a shellac base is used, the film will very rapidly dry on the roll so that it can be removed from the apparatus immediately after the coating operation.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements comprising the embodiment illustrated in the drawings without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In apparatus for film-coating rolls and other objects, a frame, guide bars carried by the frame, a carriage mounted on the guide bars, a screw operatively connected with the carriage for moving it on the guide bars, and means for rotating the screw, 8. cup having an aperture for the passage'of the object to be coated, said cup being adapted to contain the coating liquid, means carried by the cup and acting in conjunction with the object to retard the passage of liquid from the base of the cup.
2. In a film-coating apparatus for rolls and other objects, a base member, a drive shaft supported by said base member, opposed screws rising vertically from the base member and operatively connected with said drive shaft, a carriage connected to said screws for movement toward and from the base, a cap member, means including said cap member for supporting the object to be coated, a liquid holding cup supported by the carriage and having an aperture for the passage therethrough for the object to be coated and a flexible diaphragm at the base of saidcup adapted to contact with said object to seal the passage of liquid from the base of the cup.
