Dec. 26, 1933. J. SILVER ET AL HAND SHARPENER FOR SCISSORS Filed Feb. 20, 1953 INVENTORS Jose dz 5171? 1240212 (Va/finer xf/h/b @Mm q ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 26, 1 933 U ITE T E HAND SiHARPENER FOR SCISSORS A Joseph Silver and Frank'Wallmer, New York,N.'Y.*
Application February 20, 1933. Serial No. 65'l,596 class.- f (01. 51-205) This invention relates to an improved and novel hand sharpener for scissors or thelikeinstruments and it is the principal object of -our invention to provide a handy and inexpensive I tool ofsimple construction, yet durable and high .to expose successively'new and unused abrad ing surfaces in order to enable the operator to make full use of the entire abrading-surface by a ready adjustment. "Still another object of our invention-is the provision of a tool having a'handle equippedwith corrugated finger holds or grips presenting a firm hold for the instrument during its operation by rapidly moving it along the bevelled cutting edges of the shanks of a pair of scissors totbe sharpened while firmly holding the abrading surfaces against the cutting edges. p A further object of our invention'is the provision of a-hand sharpener for scissors equipped witha means to permitof a convenient adjustment of the'abrading surface to suit the particular bevel of the cutting edges of the shanks of a pair of scissors,
A still further object or our invention is the provision of a hand toolfor sharpening scissors" in which the handle is adjustably'held .ina suite able frame allowing the adjustment of the angle of the abrading surfaces to suit the angle of the bevel of the cutting edges 'of'the'. shanks of a pair of scissors, while means are providedto limit the angular displacement of the abrading surfaces to one anothen 0 These and other objects and advantages of our invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a mate-v rial part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hand sharpener for scissors constructed according to our invention. I
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the sharpener.
Fig. 4 illustrates a modified form of sharpener in rear elevation.
Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation thereof, the
section being taken on line 55 of Figure 4.
' of both plates to one another. 7
Fig.7 is a perspective detail view of holder, plate and handle.-
r V I 1. Fig. :8 is a'sectional side elevation of another I modified form of our scissors sharpener.
As illustrated in Figures 1-3 the sharpener com prises a holder or handle 10, the side edges of which have integrally formed therewith a pair of'substantially circular finger pieces 11, 12. arranged at an angle of substantially to the handle and spaced from one another and corrugated at their outer faces, as at 13 to present a firm'gripping face to the fingers of the operator.
The inner end of the handle is widened to form a substantially semi-circular plate 14 angularly bent to the handle .at an inclination.
Ascr e'w 15 is used to secure a disc 16 to plate 14, and between plate'l i and disc 16 a circular disc 17 0f a suitable ab'rading or sharpening maiii terialis removably'held-to the inner face of disc 16 withutwo thirds of its area' covered by plate llwhile its other third is exposed. r 7 Another. disc 18 of likewise abrading or sharpening material-is placed-againstthe inner face of: plate 14 and covering the :same with two thirds of-"its area'while theremaining third of disc 18 is-placed and secured in any-suitable manner to the underside of handle 10, as at 19.
ItIwill be' clear that when the 'cutting'edges of the shanks of .a pair 'of scissors are placed into the angle so formed atlthe meeting point of the two abrading discs 17, 19; as indicated in broken lin'es in Figure 1- and the tool is rapidly moved along these-edges the same will readily be ;{3
If V the 'exsharpened to any desired degree. posed part of. the disc 17 Iis'worn the -screw 15 is loosened and the disc is turned to expose an-,
other .unusedithird of its area and if this action is continued also 'for'the exposure-of the third part of the iabrading face, the usefulness of the .abrading-surface may .be prolonged toits full extent.
In the modified form of our invention illustrated in Figures lto 7 the handle 21 has its-innerend widened and provided with recesses or sockets 22,
23 in its inner edge for the reception of the tenons 24,, 25 of a'separate semi-circular plate 26', for the purpose of providing for a relative displacement the end of a screw 28 by means of which the outer circular disc 29 is held against plate 26 with andhandle.
' claim as new and is exposed, as at 32 While one third of disc 31 is placed against the underside of handle 21, as at 33, while finger rests 34, 35 are provided on the side edges of the handle 21.
In order to allow an adjustment of the tool to suit'the angle of the bevelled cutting edges of the scissors shanks, the plate 26 has attached to its upper edge theouter endiofla curved-member 38 havinga longitudinally extendi gjslot 31mmin permitting the passage of a set screw 38 screwed into'the outer end of a curved member39h'aviiig its foot part 40 secured to handle 21 by means ofrivets 41 or the like. I V
It will be evident from the abovej-thatbesides the turning of the disc 29 to exposeanothen third: part 32 of the abrading disc by looseningiscr'eva 28 and securing the same again, anadjustment to the angle of the bevel of the-cutting edges of 'tl'le scissors shank-can be obtained by the suitable; manipulation of set screw 38. g In the-ferm on ourqinvention iillustrated: inzFigure 8, the handle designated 12 isadjnstablyrheld in aframe 43-;having at one-end-formedltherewith an arcuate member 44 provided withralongitudh naltslot l5 inwhichaset screw-46 is adjustable the shankof which. entersvtheouter-enm of: hen:
