Description
a; s. DE BONALD. CHAIRS FOR USE IN- PUBLIC PLACES.
Patented Aug. 14,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE,
GUILLAU'ME DE BONALD, or BERTHIER-EN-HAUT, QUEBEC, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS FOR USE IN PUBLIC PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,135, dated August 14, 1877; application filed January 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUILLAUME S. on BON- ALD, of Berthier-en-Haut, in the county of Berthier and Province of Quebec, Canada,
have invented certain Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in providing a chairback with a pivoted clamping-arm to hold the overcoat or wrappings of the occupant, the
device being intended for application to those chairs used in public places, which have devices for holding the hat, cane, &c., in order to adapt them for holding all articles which the occupant wishes to dispose of temporarily.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved chair; Fig. 2, a vertical central shown. The arm is allowed a slight play upon its pivot, and is arranged to enter at its upper end a recess in the top of the chair-back. At its lower end the arm is acted upon by a spiral spring, 0, seated in the seat of the chair, the
effect of which is to press the upper end of the arm against the chair-back.
The coat or other article being hung upon the arm and pressed thereby against the back of the chair, is securely clear of the floor, and out of the way of the occupant of the chair as well as of the person in the next seat behind the same.
The pressure of the occupants back against the lower end of the arm D effectually prevents the surreptitious removal of the coat.
If desired, the spring may be omitted and the pressureof the sitters backnpon the arm relied upon to hold the arm against the back of the chair.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with a chair, A, an arm or upright, D, pivoted in the back thereof, as and for the purposes shown and described.
G. S. DE BONALD.
