INTERCHANGEABLE POST CONSTRUCTION FOR DERRICKS Filed Jan. 29, 1929 Patented Dec. 1, 1 931 7 ewe STATES Parana o icE LESLIE A. RAWSON, or nos nnontnscamronnm. Assmnon 'ro ammo-DERRICK & EQUIPMENT ooMPA vY, or Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF INTERCHANGEABLEPOST CONSTRUCTION FOR nERRIoKs Application filed January '29, 1929. Serial na ssasoe.
My invention relates .to means for connecting parts together; and in its broad concep-.
tion it consists of connecting means for rigid- IycOnnectingone part to another'and which ed on vertical posts which are connected tothe base of the derrick and to vahorizontai girt, which is connected toadjacent derrick legs. Ordinarily the posts for supporting the variousapparatus just mentioned are se- I cured in place by. bolts which extend through openings in the posts and in members of t e derrick. 1
One of the objects of 'thislinvention is to provide a means forsecuring the post to a derrick so that the post maybe adjusted hori zontally without requiring the parts of the connecting. means or the post tobe removed from place and without requiring holesto be drilled in the derrick parts. I
Another object of this invention is. to providea connecting meansxof this character having a novel form of attachment member.
-- Another objectj of my invention is to 'provide a; combination in, which a horizontal member having-a flange and a vertical member are secured together by a means wh1c'h 1n cludes an attachment-member havlng'laws adapted to receive between themthe flange and means connecting the attachment-member tothe vertical member; v I a Another object of the invention is to provide a combination as mentioned inwhich the jaws are .angularly disposed to provide a wedge-shaped opening to receive the flangel It is a still further object of my'invention' to provide a combination as mentioned in which one of :the jaws of the attachmentmember is provided with teeth for preventing sideward movement on the flange ofthe horizjontal member. I v I, I
A further object of the inventionis to pro- .ing the attachment-means of the invention.
vide a combination of this character in which the means for connecting the attachment-. member to the vertical member is inthe form. of abolt which engages one surface ofthe flange of the horizontal member.
Other. objects andadvantages of my inven- 7 tion will be pointed out in the ensuing der scription. a e a The invention may bebetter understoodby reference to the accompanying drawings, in which a Fig. .1 is an elevational view utility ofmy invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view showshowing the 1 Y A N, Fig. BisQa perspective view of one-form of attachment-member ofmy' invention. LFigA is a'perspective viewot another form of a ttachmentqnember of my invention. Referring to the drawings in detail and particularly to Fig. 1, the numeral 11 repres'ents a post, which is secured to parts12 and 13 by attachment-means 14 embodying'the features of this invention. V
For the" purpose of explainingthe details of the invention, the attachment at the upper end of the post 11 will be referred to. Se-
therefrom guide means 15 forthe post which comprises-a pair of angles lo secured to opposite sides of a web 16loy rivets 17.
cured to the post 11 and extendingupward The angleslS have le s 18 which extend outwardly from the web 6 in a'plane'substantially at',' right angles thereto. The legs 18 of the angles 15 are adaptedto engage one edg'gev ofthe part 13 The part 13 in theform of: the invention illustrated is in theflform of an I-beam having horizontali fianges 20. ,and a vertical webf21. The legs 18.are adapted to engage adjacent edges of the flanges 20.
The connecting means or" my invention in-' eludes, as an important part thereof, an attachm'entsmember 23 which is illustrated in perspective in F g. 3. The attachment-menu ber 23 has an upper aw 24 having a substantially flat and horizontal lower face 25, and
has a lower jawee; which is angularly disposed with respect to the jaw 24, so as to pro- 'vide. a wedge-shaped mouth or opening 27.
The lower awQG isshown as being provided with teeth 28, which extend from the front to the rear part of the lower aw. If desired, however, the teeth may be provided on the flat face 25 of the upper jaw 24:, and in addi tion to this, grooves may be provided in a direction at right angles to the teeth 28 so that the action of the teeth will be to prevent movement of the attachmentanember in any direction, after it has been installed. Extending outward from the rearward part of the attachment-member 23 in opposite directions are ears 30 having openings '31 formed therethrough. The openings 31 are formed so that the lowest part thereof rests in substantially the same plane as the lower flat face 25 of the'jaw2l. It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the ears 30 eXtend outward from the upper part of the attachment-member.
The attachmentanember 23 is installed as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The attachmentmember is placed so that the flange 20 is re ceived by the wedge-shaped mouth 27. The flat face 25 engages an upper flat face 32 of the flange 20 and the teeth 28 of the lower 26 engage a lower face 33 of the flange. There is an attachment-member 23 placed on both the upper and lower flanges 20. Provided for connecting the attachment-member to the angles 15 to form a part of the post 11 are bolts 34. The bolts 34L extend through open ings 35 formed in the legs 18 of the angles 15 and through the openings 31 of the ears 30. Nuts 36 are secured onto the ends thereof and serve the purpose of pulling the legs 18 against the part 13 and of pulling the attachment-members onto the flanges 20. When the parts are securely fastened the attachment-members 23 immovably grip the part 13 and it is impossible for the post to accidentally shift. An adjustment of the post may be readily accomplished, however, by loosening the bolts 34 and moving the attachment-members outward so that they re lease their grip on the edges of the flanges 20 of the part 13 or the part 12.
The important part of this form of the invention resides in the particular design of the attachment-member 23 adapting it to manufacture and sale as a new article of manufacture and its function in the combination.
In Fig. 4: I show an alternative form of the invention, in which an attachment-member is :provided with sections '51 connected together by a partition 52 having an opening 53 formed therein. The sections 51 have upper jaws 55 and lower jaws 56 which form wedge-shaped mouths 57. The construction of each section 51 is like that of the upper and lower jaws 23 and 26 of the form of the invention illustrated in Fig.3, with the exception that they may be narrower. The opening 53 is arranged so that its lowest part is in the same plane as the lower faces of the upper jaws 55. This form of the invention requires but one bolt, which extends between the sections 50 and 51.
The form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 is a practical form of the invention and further illustrates that the invention is susceptible of modification and that such modifications come within the conception of this invention.
