This invention relates to wrenches of'the chaintype in which the wrench is provided with aw portions at the end ofthe: handle, and a link chain is passed around apipe engaged by these jawsfandthe chain secured to the body'just back; of'the jaws, usually in an adjustable manner. It is customary to provide a pair of spaced plates or projections to constitute these'jaw members," and further to provide teeth on these portions, and
each jaw-plate is frequently made angular with the apex at the middle, in line with; the handle axis, from which angular portions of the jaws extend, diverging outwardly;
The object'of thepresent invention is to provide an improved form' of jaws at the end, whereby the pipe can be placedat the middle portion that is somewhat depressed, and then the chain made secure to the body after passing around the pipe, and as the wrench handle is swung in eitherdirection, the side portionsof the jaw plates will-have a particular cam action on the pipe, by tak ing up the small amount of slack in the chain after it has been secured tothe bod In the accompanying drawings s owlng embodiments of my invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2is a similar view at the end portiondle swung to clampingzposition.
Fig; 3 is a viewtaken at a right angleto that of Fig. 1. p 1 5 I Figs. 4 and 5 show the jaw plates: detached. Fig. 6 shows the end of the handle bar. Fig. 7 is an end view partly insectionfi Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line '8'8 ofFig.1.
Fig. 9 1s a diagram takingthe relative v iqstitute the aws to engage the pipe. .In them) :form shown I providetoothed faces on each shape and position er the jaw plate ends.
Fig. 10 showsanother form oflnut and: slotted portions of the plates] 7 I K As shown in the drawings the wreneh com prises a body consistingota handle 2 and jaw members or plates S-and 4,that are suitably secured to the end of the'handleas by a bolt 5 passing through holes'6 and Wintheplates and a-hole 8' in the handlerportion'. These plates have slotted portions'at 9 and -10 .into
. axial line of the handle,'or nearer, and thus an angular. strain would be exerted on this adwhich fits the squared end of the'handle to 1930; Serial No. 491,124;
prevent turningof the plates, and the bar is shownprovided with'lugs at 11 and 12 that engage the rearedge of the plates respectively to receive the end thrust of the plates on the bar, and thus relieve strain on the bolt 5.
; Any suitable meansmay be employed to'secure the linkchain 13 tothe' body, preferably to the Jplates, and which may be adjustable to "accommodate different sizes of pipes. As A shown each'plate; is provided with a hook co projection 14,15, on its inner face extending outwardly and rearwardly, toreceive pins 16 on the chain 13, that project out beyond the links as indicated in Fig. 8. Theother end of p the chain is shown adj ustably secured by means of a threaded bolt 17 engaged'by a nut 18 that turns in slotted portions 19 and 20 in the plates 3 and 4, which nut will project outwardly through these slots for engagement by the-fingers of the user, and the bolt and chaincan travel endwise between the separated plates. .Where various sizes of pipes are engaged, the chain, after passing around the pipe','wi1l be brought further out from the justing bolt, tending to twist it in the nut as thelatter remained with its axis parallel with the handle axis. To permitthis nutto swing I provide it with a curved or spherical face 21; =s0
* and the edges orwalls ofthe plates 3 and 4 engaged by this curved nut face are curved or "spherical as" at 22 and 23.. Instead'of the spherical face of thenut and similar convex curves ofthe engaging'faces ofthe plate slots s5 thenut 40 can have a flat face 41 in a plane,
a and the slot faces 42 and43 can becurved as a cylinder as shown in Fig. 10.
The endwalls of the plates 3 and 4 con- 2 side of the middleiportion that is depressed,
eachlying substantially inacurve, as at 24 and 25'in the jaw 3, and 26 and 27in the jaw 4.- In Fig. 9,-I indicatea diagram show 96 ing the curved arrangement of these jaw-faces i'24and 25. These curves as shown have the vantage to form these curves with the center .tings.
of the curve 24 at 31, where the pin 16 is engaged by the hooks 14 and 15; and the center of the curved face is located at the normal or approximate position of the pivot connection of the bolt 17 with the end link of the chain, .as at .32. It .will Joe zfiunther observed that fleese pivot points are eqni-distant from the axis of the handle. It will be further observed that a common tangent line to the curves 24 and 25 will have a'poin t-oftan Y gency at 36and 37, at the intersection of the lines 38 and 39 passing through the center 31 and 32 of the curves 24;.and 25, and-parallel to the handle axis 30.
The jaws 3 and l arepnovigled eaehwvithan- (extension-44 and 45$proj-eoting inwardly until they (contact ;as shown Fig. 7.. Thegend :f-aoes of these extensions gconrespond in contour {to the toothed curved jaw portions .24 and 25 :Qif one jaw plateand 2.6 and of the other jaw plate. Thus it will ibe seen from Fig. if", :that !the jaws are practioal-ly'oontinu- .ous from side :to side atthe 'i-nner (or-middle POIlZi'OIlS, to better engage the smaller-sizes of pipes, :as well ;as {to reinforce the jaws, and :better :engage .the flanges =or beads ton gfit- In the use :of {the device a pipe-its is V placed at :the middle portion of the jaw plaites containing :the depnession .34, and the tree end of the chain passed around the pipe and brought ,dOVII toengage the hooks 714. and 15. The nut 18 isadjusted one wayroir theother so that one of :the pins :16 won {this end portion tOif the chain will pass .down into the. hook portions of the plates. 1 But this "will. provide a small amount :of slack in :the iohain as the link moves .into. this hook towards :the :jaws. As stated the nut .is turned :until the r can just pass 'down into the book after zbetween'the jaws at 31. Ellbis wi'lzl rloosen flzhe :wneneh onthe pipe :and lit :eanbe swung back going zaround the pipe the middle position, zasshoavn in Fig. 1. Then the handle .zis'-sw ung, :as -.to ithelett in Fig. 2., and the pipe being stationary the "jaw face 23:11am er swing onlthe tace-of the pipe. It *will :be
seen from Fig. :2 that theshandle aw plates-' -zt0 :ohtaiin a (fresh sgrip, .=and';then again iswlin'g ding the wrench to th'e'leit it will tumtlier turn the pipe, and thus have the. ratchet action.
It will be understood that if the wrench is swung to the right relative to the pipe from the position of Fig. 1, the pipe will engage the jaw 25 in the same manner and the'operation will be the same, with the ratchet action to turn the pipe.
