The objects of the invention are first, to provide a combination plier-wrench which can be used either as pliers, nut wrench, pipe wrench or cutters, and so constructed as to be capable of exerting great pressure between its jaws when used as such tools. Second, to provide the face of the jaws of the plier wrench with U-shaped grooves opposite each other, the edges of which will rip round objects in such a manner as to permit turning them either way. Third, to provide a plier wrench with its jaw bodies sharpened to a chisel or knife edge capable of exerting great cutting force on same.
Generally stated the invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described. In the accompanying drawings which are a part of this specification and illustrate this improved combination plier wrench like numbers inclicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a full View of the plier wrench as invented and designed by me. Figure 2 shows the plier wrench with the handles closed and the jaws open when it can be used as a pipe wrench or nut wrench. Figure 3 shows the form of the complete jaw of the plier wrench. Figure 4 shows a detailed view in perspective of the push rod ends and the adjusting nut. Figure 5 shows the form of a half hinge. Figure 6 shows the shape of the spring 13 fastened into the hollow of the handles.
The following is a full and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same. The jaws 3 of the plier-wrench which may be made of steel or other suitable metal are formed separate- 1y from the handles. They consist of the jaws proper 4, jaw bodies 5 and handle ends 6 of the jawbodies. The inside edges of the jaw-bodies are sharpened to a chisel or knife edge 7 and act as cutters when the jaws are drawn together. The shape of the jaws 1929. Serial No. 376,168.
pro er 4 can be likened to a V out in half vertica ly, and on the inside face of the jaws proper U shaped grooves 14 are milled, the edges of the grooves acting as grips for round objects. The jaw-bodies 5 extend a proper length, thickness and width from the jaws proper and then are made narrower on the inner side to form the jaw body handle ends 6 and leave a space between them for the draw strap bolt 8. The jaws 3 are connected together by four toggle links 9 made from two metal straps (Figure 5) which are bent in such a way that a part of the length from one end runs in a straight line then bends to the side, half the thickness of the strap, then runs in a straight line to the end. The bend runs diagonally across the face of the strap. The ends of the toggle links 9 are fastened by rivets two opposite each other at the beginning of each'jaw-body from the jaws proper and two toggle links at the handle ends of the jaw-bodies 6 and over the connecting handle ends 16. The centers of the toggle links are fastened by rivets to the flat end of the draw strap bolt 8. The draw strap bolt is made from a round metal rod flattened at one end to the proper length and the rest of the length is left round and is threaded to receive the adjusting nut 10. The adjusting nut is made from a round metal rod of the size desired and is drilled and threaded through the center. At a suitable distance from one end the outer diameter of the nut is reduced to form a groove and a collar at that end as shown by Figure l. The handles 17 are made from a U shaped angle element 'and'are made the same width at the connecting ends 16 as the handle ends of the j aw-bodies 6 to which they are hinged at 11 and taper a little toward the outer ends 19 which are bent to form a small half circle when closed together. The ends 19 are widened a little and are cut to close together in interfitting tongue and groove fashion. A flat spring 20 being riveted to one of the handle ends and having a hole which fits over a projection on the other handle end, or any similar means used for such a purpose may be used to hold them closed when so needed. At about a third of the length of the handles from the connecting ends 16 there are fastened square tapering push rods 12; The larger ends are fitted into the U hollow of the handles, and'the tapered ends push against the adjusting nut 10 on the draw strap bolt 8. The tapered push rod ends have small half round projections facing to thecenter between the handles which engage the groove on the ad justing nut 10 as shown by Fig. i and are held in place by small metal straps 18 fastened across through the groove, one on either side of the projections. One end of a fiat bent spring 13 is riveted into the hollow of each handle and the other end presses against the push rods 12, the pressure of the springs causing both the handles to open at the same time and draw the jaws apart evenly. The action of the handles when they are drawn apart causes the push rods to pull the draw-strap bolt towards the jaws pressing on the center of the hinges causing them to straighten and open the aws, and when the handles are being closed the draw strap bolt is forced the opposite way closing the hinges and drawing the jaws together.
The adjusting nut can be unscrewed on the drawstrap bolt to leave the jaws opened the desired space, Figure 2. \Vhen the handles are closed and the push rods lock the drawstrap bolt in one position the jaws will be held rigid and the plier-wrench can then be used as a nut wrench or pipe wrench,
I am not aware that a plier wrench was made prior to my invention and I therefore claim such a combination broadly.
I claim:
1. A combined plier wrench comprising a pair of jaws; a plurality of toggle links pivotally connected to the jaw-bodies at the beginning of the jaws proper and to the handle ends of the aw bodies to maintain the aws in a parallel relation in respect to each other, a draw-strap bolt which is connected to the center connecting pivots of the jaw connecting toggle links, a round nut which is grooved at one end threaded on said bolt, a pair of free end handles pivoted one to each jaw body handle end, and a pair of push rods connected into the groove of the nut and pivotally connected to the handles.
2. In a plier wrench means for a joint engagement of the outer ends of the handles consisting of having the ends of the handles fitted together with interfitting tongues and grooves.
