The disk 14 may constitute a flat-sided inner portion of the head, and the headmay include also an outer bufler portion bearing tain shocks or jars such as may be caused on the outer'side of the said inner portion, and "of smaller diameter than the latter, as shown by Figures 4: and 6.
Figure it; shows a buffer portion 24, com posed of a plurality of disks'of fibrous material, such aspaper, said disks being bound together and secured to the inner head portion 14 by fasteners which may be the above described staples, r of any other suitable character.

l a tubular sheet metal plug formed to enter and bear on an end portion of the internal surface of such package and having outer and inner stiffening flanges in planes at right angles to the of the plug, the outer flange bearing on the inner side of the head, and fastenin members clamping the head and the outer flange together, the inner flange projecting inwardly from the inner end of the plug and resisting pressure tending to collapse said inner end, the outer flange, the head and the fastening members resisting pressure tending to collapse the outer end of the plug, the plug being provided With spurs projecting outwardly from its periphery and adapted to automatically engage the internal surface of the package, said spurs being inclined relative to the axis of the plug to permit inward movement on the plug into the package and prevent the withdrawal of the plug therefrom.

A protective cap of the character and for the purposes set forth comprising a plug element adapted to enter one end of the bore of a tubular package, a head element projecting radially fromsaid plug to overlap the end of such a package, and a bufl'er element at the outer side of said head and or" less diameter than the head, and otherwise of such shocks or jars of impact applied endwise of the package and at an inclination to its in testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature.
