vBUCKLE FOR WRIST WATCH STRAPS Filed May 9. 1930 1N V EN TOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented May 19, 1931 4* UNITED srArss PATENT OFFICE NELS T. NELSON, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T J. F. STURDYS SON CO., OF ATTLEBORO FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS BUCKLE FOR WRIST WATCH STRAPS Application filed May 9, Y1930. serial No. 450,967.
This invention relates to a clasp or buckle particularly adapted to be used on a wrist watch strap or bracelet, and has Jfor its ob ject to provide a construction by which one of the parts may be releasably clamped at any desired point along the strap.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable buckle member with a` clamp lever which will not interfere with the clasping of the two parts together, and which will provide a ready adjustment along the length of the strap.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means for adjustably securing one part of the buckle along the strap, and locking the securing means of thisv part in position by the other part of the buckle i when held in clasped engagement therewith.
With these and other objects and advant 20 tageous features in View, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a top plan View of the buckle with its two parts in clasped position;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the body or adjustable part of the buckle as secured in position on the strap with the plate part shown in Figure 1 removed therefrom;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3--3 of Figure 1; 35 Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the body member with its clamp lever removed;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamp lever;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the body member with its clamp mounted therein in working position upon the strap; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 7 7 of Figure 3.
In the use of wrist straps for securing a wrist watch about the arm of the wearer, it is found desirable to loop a portion of the L, strap through the bail ofthe wrist watch or other eye or bail portion by doubling the strap upon itself and securing it in a de sired position toV cause the strap to snugly embrace the wrist, but permitting enlargement to remove the same over the hand, and in order to provide a positive and yet easily operable buckle member which may be moved and secured in adjusted positions Y along the strap, I have provided a body which will receive a strap and have mounted a clamp lever therein to be swung to grip the strap between it and the body to frietionally hold the body member in positiornuco and have also provided on this body means to receive `the plate member of the buckle which may be attached to the end of the strap for releasably securing the plate in position; and the following is a detailed de-, seription of the present embodiment of: this j invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accolnplished.
IVith reference to the drawings, 10 desig-t 70 nates the end portion of a strap to which thewplate member 11 of the buckle is suitably secured by means or' an eye clamp 12 secured thereto and upon the strap part 13 there is mounted the body member 14 of 75 the opposite part of the buckle which consists of a bottom wall 15 with slots 1G and 17 extending transversely with relation to the strap when mounted thereon, and side walls 18 extending from the bottom wall 15 and along the sides of the strap part 13. Pairs of openings 19, 20 are formed in these side walls, and between the side walls there is mounted a clamp lever 21 which is L-shaped and provided with trunnions 2285 adjacent the juncture of the arms 2? and 2i of the Llever, which trunnions extend into C one pair of openings 19 to pivotally mount the clamp lever in the `body member. The openings 19 are in line with the slot 1G so 90 that the arm 23 extends toward the slot 1G in the bottom wall and 'forces the strap part 13 into this slot to frictionally engage with the edges thereof when in clamped position, as illustrated in- Figure 3.
This lever is held in clamped position by detents 25 upon the flange 26 of the arm 21 of the lever which snap into the openings 20 due to the resiliency of the side walls 18 and hold the lever in clamping position. The
27p( i i Y Y Y 1,806,213V Y i flanges 26 Valso, serve to prevent the lever l0" Y i i the plate member l1 to hold ift'rmlyin contact With the broad surfaceof they clamp -Which forms a seat` for the same and "pre- I vents rocking 'and liability of. detachment ofthis plate member when in secured posiy tion; and at .thel samertime Vas thisplate Y member isvlield against the clamp7 the ysame is prevented from swinging on its trunnions as a pivot to release the strap Which is sef fromV being swung `beyond its maximum clamping position and cause the top of the lever to present an extended surface to form a seat for the plate `11.
" In order that the clamp may be moved to lreleased position upon removal ofthe plate l l member, I have provided a finger piece 29 a to facilitate Vengagementland movementJ of the same7 and have vnotched thel clamp as at 3Q, on'either sidetoprevent the .clamp fromengagement with the' knobs 27 i Thebody member 11i may be moved 'along i `the strap parti 13 to any desired position, andV g the plate meinberll which is secured to the u end of the strap'may beengaged to draw the strap' tightly abouti the Wrist and be snapped finto engagement with `the tbody"` p member for, holdingtheL parts, indesired W111i@ I im@ described Certain zconstruction forms Whichrembody the principles of my invention, it is obvious vthat other desired changes inarrangement may be made Witli- L- l ing the spirit and the scope of the invention -as dened in the appended claim.
