Description

May 5, 1931. Y c. F. wALP 1,803,416
- SKID Filed sept. 28, 1929 Zd/'Zes lr. Wal/D Patented May 5,l 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES F. WALP, F BERWICK, PENNSYLVANIA, .ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAR 'AND FOUNDRYpCOMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY s xm i Application led September 28, 1929. Serial No. 895,888/.
This invention relates to skids or platforms adapted to rest upon a floor or other flat surface for receivin articles to be moved from one place to anot er.
One object of the present invention is to" provide a skid of the character described which is strong and durable and beneath which a lift truck may be inserted and then elevated to clear the skid from its support.
Another object of the invention to `provide a skid formed of'a single metal pressing reinforced by channels secured to the under surface thereof. n
A further object of the invention is the rovision of a skid of the character described ormed of a` unitary pressing comprising sides and a top supporting surface; the whole reinforced by stifl'ening elements secured to the sides and su porting surface on the inner surfaces thereof).
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a skid which is devoid of bolts, rivets or other mechanical securing means whereby a substant-ially smooth top surface and sides are provided, or, to be more exact, asin-face which is devoid of rojections such as bolt or rivet heads or the ike.
Other objects and advantages of this i11- vention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction l with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the skid of the present invention, having a portion of the top surface broken away to disclose the reinforcing elements;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1; and F Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3,
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the several views, in-the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the skid comprises in the main a body portion A, formed ofa single metal pressing, having a top supporting surface 2 and downwardly flanged or bent sides 4 which latter define supporting legs for the skid.
The skid also comprises a plurality of spaced reinforcing elements B in the forml of flan Ved channels which are preferably spot we ded or otherwise secured to the under surface of the skid as hereinafter to be described. f
The channels lare substantially U`shaped in elevation and comprise a main portion 6 secured to the under surface of the supporting surface 2 and the ends thereof are bent at an acute angle as at 8 and then directly downward to form the vertical legs 10, the flanges of which latter lie againstand are secured to the inner surface of the sides 4 of the body portion A of the skid. In practice the channels 6 are spot welded to the skid bod but obviously they may be otherwise wel ed thereto, as for example by means of an electric arc.
By providing the angle portions 10 in the reinforcing elements B it will be apparent that extremely sharp bends of the channels are avoided, thus simplifying manufacture of the skid and eliminating the possibility of straining the metal of the reinforcing elements and also providing a construction in which the edge portions 12 of the skid are reinforced at 2 points, namelythe points 11i and 16. The main portions 6 of the channels B reinforce vthe top surface 2 0f the skid body as will be apparent, While the legs 10 of the channels B stiffen the sides 4 in an obvious manner.
The drawings herein disclose one embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that they are for illustrative vurposes only and that various changes in the orm and ro ortions of the device may be made with- 1n t 1e scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is. claimed is:
1. A- skid formed of a single piece of metal provided with downturned flanges upon opposite sides defining supportin ortions, and a plurality of separately forme anged channels secured to the inner surface of the metal and extending along and secured to the flanges.
'2. A skid formed of a sheet of metal provided with downtnrned sides deningsupporting portions, and a plurality of separately formed reinforcing elements comprising rality of separately formed channels secured to the inner surface of the metal and having the ends thereof outwardly and then downwardly bent.
3. A skid comprising a sheet of metal defining a supporting surface, said sheet of metal having its side edges downwardly flanged to provide supporting legs, channel units secured to the under surface of the supporting surface and having the ends thereof outwardly bent to be spaced from the supporting surface and supporting legs and then downwardly bent and arranged against the supporting legs and welded thereto.
4. A skid comprising a sheet of metal delining a supporting surface and provided with downturned sides defining supporting legs, and separately formed U-shaped channel units welded to the under surface of the supporting surface and to the legs.
5. A skid comprising a sheet of metal detining a supporting surface, said sheet of metal having its sides downturned to provide supporting legs, and a plurality of spaced channel units welded to the under surface of the supporting surface and having their end portions outwardly bent to be spaced from the sheet of metal and then downwardly bent to lie against the supporting legs, said downwardly bent portions being welded to said legs.
6. A skid formed of a single piece of metal provided with a flat unbroken top surface and downturned fianges upon opposite sides defining supporting portions, and a plurality of separately formed flanged channels secured to the inner surface of the metal and extendng along and secured to the downturned armes.
7 A skid formed of a single piece of metal provided with a flat unbroken top surface and downturned anges upon opposite sides defining supporting portions, and means for stiffeningr the metal sheet com rising a plu- -shaped units secured to the inner surface of the metal and extending along and secured to the supporting legs.
ln witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
