This invention relates to knock-down boxes such as boxes used by children at play, and has for its object to provide a rectangular box, the body of which includestwo side mem- 5 bers and two end members, said members 'being separately connected by tongue and groove joints, the construction being such that, when the members are assembled, racking movements of the box tending to break 1 0 the tongues and the walls of the grooves are opposed, and other desirable results are attained, the said members, and a bottom asso' ciated therewith, being adapted to be quickly assembled and separated.

The body of the sand-box is rectangular and comprises two duplicate side members 12, having outwardly projecting flanges 13, at their upper edges, the ends of said flanges being ofiset inwardly-from the ends of the side members, as shown by Figure 2, so that the side members include projecting extensions 12a, in which transverse dovetail grooves 1 1 are formed. The ends 13a of the flanges 11-3 constitute abutment shoulders, for a purpose hereinafter stated. v

Figures 7 and 8 show a sand box embodying the construction above described and provided with legs adapted to support the box suitably raised, the legs being separably connected with the box body. Two opposite members of the body, preferably the side members 12, are provided with sockets 25, formed to receive legs 26. Said legs have reduced upper portions removably inserted in the sockets, and larger lower portions, the upper ends of which form shoulders 27 (Figure 8) bearing on the lower edges of the side members 12, to support the weight of the box.

The inner edges of the flanges 13 and 16 are preferably flush with the inner sides of the side and end members, so that said flanges form an open mouth portion of the storage space, said portion being of the same area as the portion formed by the side and end members, and permitting unobstructed access to all portions of said storage space, and removal of all of the sand therefrom by pouring when the box is inverted.

I claim: 7

1. An open knoclodown sand box, comprising a pair of side members, having end extensions containing vertical dovetail grooves, and outwardly projecting flanges, fixed to the upper edges of said members, the ends of said flanges forming abutment shoulders from which said extensions project, and a pair of end members having vertical dovetail tongues on their ends removably inserted in said grooves, and outwardly projecting flanges fixed to their upper edges, said flanges having extensions overhanging said tongues and bearing on the extensions of the side members to limit the entrance of the tongues into the grooves, and on the abutment shoulders of the side members, to oppose racking of the box, the inner edges of said flanges being flush with the inner sides of the side and end members, so that said flanges form an open mouth portion of the storage space, said portion being of the same area. as the portion formed by the side and end members, and permitting unobstrueted access to all portions to said storage space.

2. An open knock-down sand box, comprising a pair of side members, having end extensions containing vertical dovetail grooves, and outwardly projecting flanges, fixed to the upper edges of said members, the ends of said flanges forming abutment shoulders from which said extensions project, and a pair of end members having vertical dovetail tongues on their ends removably inserted in said grooves, and outwardly projecting flanges fixed to their upper edges, said flanges having extensions overhanging said tongues and bearing on the extensions of the side members to limit the entrance of the tongues into the grooves, and on the abutment shoulders of the side members, to oppose racking of the box, the side members being provided at their lower edges with inwardly projecting cleats, whose ends are offset inwardly from the vertical grooves, while the end members are provided at their lower edges with inwardly projecting cleats, whose end portions abut the end portions of the side member cleats to additionally oppose racking of the body.
