Serial This invention relates to jigs or workholders and more particularly to work-holders adapted to dimension the exterior of ex pansible pistons, the present application being a division of my copending application for Letters Patent Serial No. 652,302 filed July 10, 1923.
One of the objects of the inventionis to provide a work-holder for an expansible piston that will hold the piston skirt to a predetermined maximum diameter during the fitting of an expanding member. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide a work-holder for an expansible piston that will enable a workman to insert a piston in the holder, force an expanding member into the piston for expanding the same to a predetermined diameter and hold the member in the piston at the desired expansion until permanent securing means are installed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a work-holder for an expansible piston in which the piston may be expanded and permanently secured against contraction, without involving a great amount of physical and mental work.
A disclosure constituting one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a sectional elevation through the holder and a piston showing the means for expanding the piston, the section being taken on line II of Fig. II.

Referring tov the drawings in which like characters refer-"to like parts throughout the views, 1 generally denotes the improved holder which isprovided with a cylindrical bore 2 of a predetermined size, preferably a size substantially-equal to the desired external diameter of an expanded piston. Piston 3 is provided with a skirt portion 4 which is expansible because of'a slot 5 ,'extending longitudinally thereof from a transverse slot 6 to the open end of the skirt. lVithin the skirt L and preferably near the open end-thereof, is an annular groove 7 and a recess 8. i An expansible ring 9 is adapted to be inserted in the groove 7 and expanded by means of wedge 10 inserted between the open ends of the ring 9 and subsequently secured in position within recess 8 by means of rivet 11.

A pin'lS is inserted inthe alignedholes for holding the piston "firmly in position, and. the holder placed upon a bench I (not shown) with its flattened face 19 against any suitable abutment (not shown); to prevent turning oithe holder. A' ring 9 is then inserted in groove 7 with its ends lying within recess 8, a wedge 10 isinserte'd between'the ends of ring 9 and pressure applied thereto by 'meansof screw'15, until the ring and the skirt 4 have been-expanded to the desired (ill-3 an opening therein, a piston securing causing said movable means mension, which will ordinarily be the-bore of the holder. A hole is then drilled through skirt 4 and wedge 10 by means of a drill (not shown) being inserted in hole 17 and the Wedge is securely fastened in position by rivet 11. Both the drilling and riveting operations are performed with the piston parts held in position by screw 15, after which the screw is released, pin 18 is withdrawn, and the finished piston removed from the holder.
While the construction herein shown and described is well adapted to fulfill'the objects of the invention, it is to be understood that changes in the form, proportions, arrangement of parts and details of construction shown, may be resorted to when found expedient, without departing from the spirit of the invention "as expressed in the claims.
I claim:
1. A holder for expansible pistons adapted to form a gauge for controlling the diameter of the piston,means for securing the. skirt portion ofthe piston within the holder, and means-associated with the holder for effectingexpansion of the piston to the limits of the gauge.
2. A holder forexpansiblepistons having a bore corresponding to a predetermined diameter of a piston; said holder having an opening; means extending in said opening for holding said piston in position; and means cooperatively disposed with respect thereto for expanding the piston to a diameter of'the bore. V
3. A holder for expansible pistons having a bore corresponding to a predetermined diameter, for the piston, said holder'having pin adapted to extend through said'opening into the wrist pin bore'of the piston,;whereby to secure the piston within the holder, and means associated with the holder for effect,- ing movement of an expanding member adapted to expand the piston to thelimits of said bore. 1 V
i 4. A holder for expansible pistons having a bore corresponding to a predetermined diameter of a piston, means for holding a piston against movement within said bore, and movable means on said holder having a to engage expanding means within said pisof said bore, said holder being provided with an opening adjacent the skirt of the piston and substantially in line with said expanding means wherein a tool may be inserted for forming an opening in said piston and said expanding means.
