Description

Dec. 27, 1932. M. c. TROYER' CONTAINER Filed March 9, 1931 Patented Dec. 27, 1932 into 0. TROYER, or SHIPSHEWANA, INDIANA 1 CONTAINER Application filed March 9, 1931.
This invention relates to containers and particularly to cigarette package containers. The principal object of my invention is to provide a container for a package of ciga- 5 rettes, or the like, which is provided with improved means for severing the wall of the cigarette package to facilitate access to the package interior.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container for a package of cigarettes, or the like, which is provided with package impaling and severing means, whereby the package wall is severed from the interior of the package.
A third object of the invention is to provide a container for a package of cigarettes, or the like, the container being made in halves hinged together and provided with interior package impaling and package wall severing means, whereby the package wall is severed from the interior of the package to enable ready access to the packageinterior.
' Other objects of the invention arementioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein V Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved container showing the end covers open;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container in the open position and containing a package of cigarettes which has been cut open to expose the cigarettes;
Fig. 3 illustrates a rear view of my improved container;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of one of the container half sections, viewing the interior thereof, and showing the cigarette package therein, and the pale andsevering elements in position;
Fig. 5 illustrates a separate perspective view of the pale and severing elements;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the closed container; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmental sectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 4.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawing.
Serial No. 521,046.
Referringnow to the details of the drawing the device, as illustrated, comprises generally the two half container sectionsl and 2, respectively, of box-like formation, made of any suitable metal or material, and hinged together at the rear confronting edges at 3.
A coil spring a is mounted in the hinge 3 to normally urge the two half container sections 1 and 2 together and to maintain the front confronting edges 5 and 6, respectively, in contact.
Numerals 7 and 8, respectively, indicate top end covers for the container sections 1 and 2, respectively, said covers being hinged to said container sections at 9 and 10, respectively, each of said covers being provided with a rigid depending latch element, 11 and 12, respectively, which is adapted to engage in recesses 13 and 14, respectively, provided in the container sections 1 and 2, respectively, each of said latches being suitably embossed to engage said recesses to effect a disengageable boss and socket connection.
The numeral 15 indicates an upright pale element rigidly mounted upon the bottom end wall of the container section 1 at 16 adjacent the edge 5 thereof and close to the inner face of the container section wall, but slightly spaced therefrom, said pale being formed of relatively thin flat metal and provided at its upper end with the pointed pale element 17 which is hinged thereto at 18 adjacent the upper edge of the container section, but short thereof to permit the cover 11 to be closed thereover when the pointed pale element 17 is swung inward.
Numeral 19 indicates a severing element or wire carried by the pale element 15 normally substantially parallel therewith and normally arranged within the container section 1, the upper end of said severing element being angularly bent at 20 to provide a hinge pintle for the hinge 18 of pale element 17, the lower end of said severing element extending to the exterior of and below the bottom end wall thereof and to which the ringlike handle 21 may be attached. A notch 22 may be formed in the edge of the bottom end wall of container section 1 adjacent the bot- V tom of the edge 5 thereof, in which notch the lower end of the wire 19 may be anchored, Figures 2 and 6.
In operation, the container covers 11 and 12 are opened and the pale element 17 ele vated, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the latter element being then thrust through the lower end wall of the paper cigarette package 23 adjacent the outer wall 24: thereof, further pressure on said package causing the pale element 17 to traverse the full length of the cigarette package and to pierce the top end wall 25 thereof when the package is fully arranged or disposed within the closed'container sections 1 and 2. The pale element 17 may then be folded over inwardly upon the, top wall 25 of the cigarette package. The foregoing described operation causes both the pale-element 15 andthe severing wire 19 to be arranged within the cigarette package 23 and extending longitudinally thereof adj acent, or in actual contact with, the inner surface of package wall 24.
And said described operation causes the severing wire 19 to be arranged substantially parallel with, and in substantial registration with, the confronting edges 5 and 6 of the container sections 1 and 2, and also in close relation with the edge of pale element 15. The operator thereupon grasps the ring 21, releases the wire 19 from the anchorage notch '22 and swings the Wire 19 upwardly (Fig.
4-dotted lines) between the edges 5 and 6 of the container half sections, whereby the wall 24 of the cigarette package is severed from bottom to top thereof. The wire 19 is then restored to the notch 22, the top and bottom end walls of the package 23 are then severed by swinging open the half container sections 1 and 2-, or otherwise suitably done, the covers 11 and 12 are then latched in position over the package 23, and the contents of the package 23 is then exposed for individual withdrawal. 7
It will be appreciated that the operation of the severing wire 19 severs the wall of the cigarette package from the interior of the latter, whereby injury to or destruction of the cigarettes contained in said package is wholly obviated.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is understood that other forms might be adopted for cigarette packages, or the like, all coming within'the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A container of the character described comprising a pair of box-like sections operatively and separably connected together to enable opening and closing thereof and to admit and contain a package provided with a severable wall, and package impaling and package wall severing means mounted within the container, whereby the package wall is severed when said severing means is actuated,
said impaling and wall severing means being separate means and successively operated.
2. A container of the character described comprising apair of box-like sections hingedly connected together to enable opening and closing thereof and to admit and contain a package provided with aseverable wall, and package impaling and package wall severing means mounted within the container, whereby outward actuation of said severing means causes the package wall to be severed from bottom to top.
3. A container of the character described comprising a pair of box-like sections hingedly connected together to enable opening and closing thereof, each of said sections being provided with an end cover to admit to the container interior a package which is provided with a severable wall, and package impaling and hinged package wall severing means mounted within one of said container sections, whereby outward actuation of said severing means causes the package wall to be severed from the package interior.
4:. A container of the character described comprising a pair of box-like sections hingedly connected together to enable opening and closing thereof, movable cover means for said container sections to enable the introduction to the container interior of a package which is provided with a severable wall, package impaling means, and package wall severing means projected to the package interior by said impaling means, whereby actuation of said severing means causes the package wall to be severed from the package interior.
5. In a container of the character described and comprising a pair of box-like sections operatively connected together to enable opening and closingthereof and designed to receive therein a a package provided with a severable wall, means for severing the package wall from the package interior, said means comprising a severing element designed to be thrust to the package interior through an end wall thereof and actuated to the package exterior.
6. In a container of the character described and comprising a pair of box-like sections hingedly connected together to enable opening and closing thereof and designed to receive therein a package provided with a severable wall, means for severing the package wall from the package interior, said means comprising a severing element designed to be thrust into the package interior longitudinally thereof and actuated laterally thereof to the package exterior through the package wall.
7. In a container of the character described i and comprising a pair of box-like sections hingedly connected together to enable opening and closing thereof and designed to receive therein a package provided with a severable wall, means for severing the package Wall from the package interior, said means comprising a hinged severing element mounted in one of the container sections and designed to be thrust into the package interior through the end Wall thereof and swung through the package Wall to the package exterior.
