The invention is an improvement in marine elevators in that a telescoping beam is provided at the top which may extend out beyond the limits of the vessel to position a gang plank or transfer board upon a dock or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide mechanical means for moving and locating the transfer board of a freight elevator which heretofore has been moved by manual labor.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for moving and positioning the transfer board of a freight elevator by which it may be positioned in the least possible time. 7 i
A further object of the invention is to provide means for handling a transfer board so that it may readily be moved and positioned by one man.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide operating gear for the transfer board of a marine elevator which is of a simple and economical construction.
WVith these ends in view the invention embodies an elevator positioned in the hold of a boat, a telescoping trolley beam at the top of the elevator, a manually operated trolley upon the said beam, a transfer board suspended from the trolley, and means for operating the said telescoping beam.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view showing the apparatus as it would appear in use.
Figure 2 is a view showing an end elevation of the upper end of the elevator.
Figure 3 is a detail showing the construction of the telescoping beam.
Figure 4 is another detail showing the gears for operating the telescoping beam.
In the drawing the elevator is shown as it would be made, wherein numeral 1 indicates the elevator platform, numeral 2 the transfer board, and numeral 3 the trolley.
The platform 1 is suspended in a rectangu- V lar frame formed by four corner posts 4:, which may be mounted in a boat in any suitable manner, and these are connected at the top by longitudinal beams 5 and transverse beams 6. The platform 1 is suspended by cables 7 which pass over sheaves 8 at the up: per end and around drums 9 at the lower end.
The drums 9 may be attached to any suitable type of Windlass, or operated in any suitable manner.
' The telescoping beam 3 is mounted upon rollers 10 between channels 11 supportedupon the transverse beam 6, as shown in Figure 3. The rollers 10 are rotatably mounted in the webs of the beams and also in bearing plates 12 at the tips of the beam flanges as shown in Figures 3 and 4. It will be notedthat this will permit the beam to movelongitudinally and a trolley '13 may be mounted on the lower flange of the beam by rollers 14. The trolley may be operated by a cable 15, and is provided with a chain 16 with a clevis 17 at the lower end which hooks into a ring 18 to'which four cables as indicated by the numeral 19 are attached. The outer ends of the cables are attached by hooks 20 to flanges 21 at the sides of the transfer board 2, and it will be noted that when the transfer board is in place, as
shown in Figure 1, the cables 19 may be removed to provide an unobstructed passage over the board.
On the upper side of the beam 3 is a continuous gear rack 22 which meshes with a gear 23, as shown in Figure 4, and the gear 23 meshes with a pinion 24 on a shaft 25. A sprocket wheel 26 is also mounted upon the shaft and this sprocket may be rotated by a continuous chain 27 from a sprocket 28 on a shaft 29, and the shaft 29 may be rotated by a hand chain 30 through a sprocket'31, which is also mounted upon the shaft 29. It will therefore be noted that by drawing the hand chain 30 downward in one direction it will move the trolley beam 3 toward oneside, and by moving the chain in the opposite direction the beam 3 may be moved toward the, oppositeside. The beam 3 may be provided with stops 32 at the ends to limit the movement thereof;
It will beunderstood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the type or design of the elevator, as it is understood that the device may be used with an elevator of any suitable type or design and for any other purpose, another may be in the design or arrangement of the details of the telescoping beam as it is understood this may be arranged in any suitable manner, another maybe in the use of other means for operating the telescoping beam, another may be in the use of -a-trolleyof any other type or design, and still another.

The construction Wlll be understood from the foregoing description. In useithe device will move out upon the beam to the position shown and then operated to lower the :board uponthe dock, as shown- This complete operationmay be performedin a comparatively few minutes, whereas heretofore it'requi-red considerable time to raise thetransfer board from the elevator platform and move it into position byhand; This board weighs approximately two, tons and it-is therefore a very decided advantage to provide mechanical means for placing it inposition.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters P-.atent, is:
1. In a marine elevatorof the type having a frame positioned over and extending into the hold of a ship, with a raising and lowering platform, and having a transferboardin combination therewith, a telescoping beamin the, top and at the center of said-frameand a hoisting apparatus on said beam adapted to pickup said transfer board, convey it "to the side of theship and position same with one end at a point conveniently reached'by said elevator platform and the otherend resting on a dockto which the ship may be moored.
2. In a marine elevator of the type having a frame positioned over and extending into the hold of a ship, having a raising and lowering platform and a transfer board -l11p001l1 bination therewith, a stationary trackat the top and in the center of said frame, a beam slidable on said trackand adapted to slide toward either side of the ship, means on the said beam for picking up and lowering said transfer board, and means forsliding said beam. 7 1 3.'In combination, an elevatorhaving a raising and lowering platform, and a telescoping beam with 'a, hoisting apparatus thereon for picking up objects on said plattransfer boardzand hoist whereby the hoist may raise and convey said board.
5. In anelevator" o-fthe-type having a raising and 'loweringplatform and adapted to be positioned inth e'hold of-a ship, a telew scoping beam positionedin the t op of said elevatorand ad-a ptedto-extend beyond the limits of either side thereof, a transfer board normally restinglon said platform,-and means on said telescopingbeam for adjusting the position of said board.
