Patented Sept. Z0, 1932 t NETE STATES SCOTT' LE R. CASE, OF LOS ANGELES,4 CALIFORNA COMBINATION BOX. AND TABL Application led November 24, 1928. Serial No. 321,686.
This invention relates to a combined box and table construction in which the box is more particularly designed to contain various articles of food which are to be eaten upon the table which are to be eaten upon the table which the box affords when it is opened and parts thereof are adjusted into position to form a table top. It is not intended, however, tolimit the invention altogether to such a use, as the structure hereinafter claimed may possibly be found serviceable for other purposes, such for example, as a tool box which, when arranged to form a table, could be used to taken the place of a bench for a i5 workman.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide superior means for adding to the stability of the device when used for a table, the table structure being provided with substantial bracing means when extended for such a purpose, and when in the folded condition reinforcing the walls of the box to make it a more substantial container for transporting food or other articles contained 5 therein.
A. further object of the invention is to provide improved means for detachably securing together, when extended, the elements which form the leaves of the table, so that the table top as a whole will have approximately the same strength and stability asif it were formed in a single piece.
Other objects and advantages may hereinafter appear.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device arranged to form a table.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device vin the folded condition.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of 4U Fig. 4.
` Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device arranged as shown in Fig. 1, except that the long leaves are folded over the top of the box instead of being shown in the extended position.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a view looking at Fig. 4 from right to left.
Figs. 7 and S are enlarged detailed sectional `views taken respectively on Vlines 7-7 and ss0f Fig. a.
Fig. 9 is an enlarged, fragmentalvcross-i y M sectional view of the upper portion of theV box, the line of section being on the same plane as Fig. 5.
`Referring in detail to the drawings, the box is provided with a bottom 11 the long edges of which are extended to form the side pieces 12, said kside pieces 12 having hinged to their upper edges the side eaves 13. The It; bottom 11 is extended at its end to form the 60 end pieces or walls 14 of the box, said pieces 14 having hinged thereto the end leaves 15.
Said end leaves 15 have hinged t0 each of their sides an auxiliary corner leaf section' 16 which is preferably beveled or rounded at 55 17 and which, when'the leaf sections are all extended as shown in Fig. 1, fills in the corner portion of the table top.
The various extended leaf sections which have been described are secured together by means of cooperating hooks 20 and eyes 21.
Near each end of the box there is hinged to the long side thereof a. rectangular brace 25 for supporting the extended side leaves 13. A. triangular brace 26 atl each end of the 75 box serves tosupport the end leaves 15. These braces 25 and 26, in combination with the hooks 20 and eyes 21 provide a very substantial table top when the parts which form n. 1i said table top are extended and fastened to- 30 gether as shown in Fig. 1. Said braces 25, being in the form of rectangular leaves, stien the sides of the box when they are folded thereagainstas indicated in Fig. 4. This feature is particularly valuable when the box is made of pasteboard or like material.
Inside the box supporting strips 30 are attached thereto, said supporting strips being provided with internally projecting lugs 31 5; and 32 struck up therefrom to support the 90 removable trays 33.
When the box is in the folded condition the corner sections 16 overhang the rectangular braces 25 after the latter have been swung down to the folded position. Therefore it 95 is necessary toprovide extension hinges 35 to secure said corner leaf sections 16 to the end leaves 15 if thick material is used.
Owing to the fact that the side leaf sections 13 are first folded over, it follows that 100 when the end leaf sections 15 are folded back on top of the box as shown in Fig. 2, double extension hinges 40 have to be provided to permit said end leaf sections l5 to embrace the tWo intervening side leaves 13, unless the center end sections 15 are increased in Width and the corner sections 16 decreasedaccordingly invvvidth;
The extensionhinges 85 haveintermediate extension leaves 42, the extension hinges 35x-- have intermediate extension` leaves42m, I and the extension hinges' 4104 have intermediate extension leaves 43, these elements..v being:
shown indetail in Figs. 7, 8 and 9.
It is possibleto manufacture thez device.` Y,
out of heavy pasteboard providing foldsv in the materialV thereofv 4to ft'a'keythev place of tthe hinges', said folds being regarded as the equivalent= of-the -hingesinthe claim.
