Appiieatio'aiea muy 31,
v Thijs invention relates to a mounting'for radiator shutters and moreparticularly to means formounting a shutter adj acentftothe radiator of an automotive vehicle-for controllingthe quantity' of air passing therethrough. In the present stage in the development ofmotorcars employing water cooled power plants, itis customary to provide an air cooled radiator, covered by a thin7 sheet metal shell, atitheforward'end of the vehicle, and to mount ashutter unitdirectlyY in frontA of the radiator to control the air passing therethrough, and thus maintain the cooling water of the engine fata lsubstantially constant temperature under diverse weather `conditions. Heretofore such*V shutterA units have been secured toy inturn'ed iianges formedin theiradi'ator shell, necessitating rigidifying orV strengthening of that part or theyhave been secured directly to parts ofthe radiator core not especially adapted to support them byrmearis visible from theeXterior of the vehicle and detracting somewhat fromthe appearance of the machine. Y y l In mounting the radiator cores,it is rusual Y to provide resilientfmeans` so that' various shocksreceived by the vehicle framewillnot be transmitted directly to the Vcore', the inertiarof the latter being suicient to prem vent its movement inaccord with small movements-,of the vehicleframe'. v
The radiator.` shelLhowever, being Vof lighter construction is apt to vibrate orbe come distorte'dduring uneven movements of 5 themotor'car, causing rattling and undue wear of the parts `ofza shutter unit secured to it. The Apresent invention contemplates the provision of vmeans associated directly withthe'radiator core for mounting the 40 shutter unit, in such a way that frame vibra- '45 mounting may be effected in a simpleV and V3-3 of Fig. '1, showing the radiator core,V

economical manner without substantially i changing the design of the core proper or the; radiator Shell. y u p. l
These' and other objects and advantages will ybecome apparent from 1a perusal of the PATENT' following description of a typical construe` 'Y tion' `embodyingthe principles of the inven-V tion, reference being made to the accompany-v Y ing drawing, wherein: Y l i Figi l is afront elevation of an automobile radiator having" a.A shutter unit mounted thereon in accordance with the present in,-` vention.
Fig. 2 is a disassembledperspective'view n of a portion of a radiator shutter Vunitand aV saddle for supporting the'radiator core, one
complete V side lbar or upright being shownat the left of the igure.
. Fig. 3 is a; horizontalsectionftaken'online sembled relation. f y
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the radiator core attached to the supporting saddle. y
As shown in Fig. 4, the.` radiator 10 comprisingjupperand lower watertanks 11 and 12 respectivelyv and acentral cooling part 13,` is secured to a supporting saddle 14 adapted forattachmentto theframe`of-- a motor ve- Vhicle. The saddle includes a substantially' vfsal U-shaped bar or strap having lowerside portions ,15 for resting'on the vvehicle frame and a lower central portion 16 for-supporting the lower tank 12 of the radiator core, andupright or side bar portions 17,l secured tothe U-shaped 'portion rand adapted to li'e .adjaV cent the side edge of the coolingportion 13.
The side bars have front-*edge flanges 18and of the radiator and upper extensions 20 for Y positive securement, as by, soldering,to` the Y upper tank 11. The saddle being resilient fords a flexible mounting for the ra'diator core, of which itis a part,'p`r eventing to 'a' y great extent the transmission of road shocks and engine vibrations to the core proper. The side and top edges ofthe radiator and the attached side bars are covered by Va shell or radiator covering member 22, which has a front liange 23 defining a large central opening 24 for the passage of air through the core. The shell is connected to the core by brackets 25 mounted on the top tank 11 and rearwardly extending flanges 26, provided with elongated apertures 27, formed on the side 'bars 17 .and
securelyheld by bolts 28 to ythe shell adjacent to the rear edges'thereof. A strap 29 is fixed-tothe lower side edges of theshell, as
shown in Fig. 3, for mounting the shell yupon the vehicle frame.
The radiator shutter unitg;3 0 comprises a* "plurality of narrow slats 31, preferably of vertical. extent, which are pivoted at their'up iper andlower ends'. to the top and .bottoni portions V of a' substantially rectangular` shutterframe 32, the slats being operablefor opening and `closing movement by vany. suitablemeans (not shown) tocontrolthe'quantity ofcooling air passing through the radiator core. Laterally-and outwardly extending 'ears' 34 areprovided onthe side portions of the frame 32, preferably co-planar with Y the rear face ofthe shutter unit, as shown in bars by means entirely independentV ofthe Y inbeingjlarger than the frame 32,' as shown Y Fig.- 3, andfsimilar ears are provided on the forward edgeofthe sidevbars 17. The ears'34 and 35 are apertur'ed'as indicated at 36 for the reception of bolts or other suitable securing means 37.
It will'bel seen .thatin this manner )the shutter'unit- 30 .is secured to the radiator side radiator shell, the opening 24 formed therein Fig. 3f, so as not to contact therewith. The
shutterV unit, being Amounted directly Aupon* and Vvitfis'intendedV that the invention should be commensurate with the scope of the following claims.
