This invention relates to novel improvements in vanity cases and the like and aims primarily to provide an illuminated vanity case especially designed and adapted for use where lighting is poor or entirely lacking, so that the user under such adverse conditions is enabled to properly apply cosmetics.

Contemplated by the present invention is a vanity case having in conjunction with its usual cosmetic container or containers and its mirror, self-contained illuminating means for the face of the user embodying a light globe, a reflector, a battery and a switch all of which are to be correlated in the broad aim of enhancing the efliciency of the present device.

The above, and additional objects which will hereinafter be more specifically treated,

are attained by such means as are shown in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification and then more clearly pointed out in the claim, which is appended hereto and forms part of this application.

With reference to the drawing, in which there is illustrated one embodiment of theinvention, and throughout the several views of which like characters of reference designate similar parts:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vanity case comprehended by the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken through line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Beginning now the more detailed description of the invention by reference to the accompanying drawin the numeral 10 designates a casing, pre erably fabricated from sheet metal in any desired shape or design, and having a cover 11 hingedly connected thereto, said cover having a mirror 12 mounted upon the inner side thereof in a well known manner.

The casing 10 is provided with the usual cosmetic-containing compartments 13 and cosmetic applying pufi's 14.

Formed within the rear portion of the casing 10 adjacent one end thereof is a compartment 15 adapted to be normally closed by a door 16, said door having a fiat spring 17 attached to the inner side thereof for a purpose about to be described.

Snugly fitting within the compartment 15 is a dry cell battery 18 having its positive terminal 19' normally in contact or abutment with a resilient conductor QO'mounted within and insulated from the casing 10, said battery terminal 19 being maintained in contact with said conductor by the pressure of the spring 17 upon the negative end of the battery 18, as will be readily understood by referring to Fig. 5. I

Formed within the upper rear portion of the casing is a medially and transversely disposed elongated aperture 21, within which normally seats a folding metallic reflector 22 having its rear end hingedly connected to the casing 10 adjacent the rear end of the aperture.

Fixedly secured to the inner face of the reflector 22 contiguous to the hinged rear end thereof is a threaded sleeve 23 adapted to receive in a well known manner a li ht globe 24, the terminal 25 of which prefera ly extends slightly beyond the inner end of said sleeve 23, substantially in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3, for the purpose of establishing contact between the terminal 25 and the conductor 20 when the light is in use, as will be manifest and apparent by referring to Fig. 4.

When light conditions are normal, the vanity case of the present invention is used in the usual manner, that is to say, the reflector 22 will remain in its downwardly folded pomay be used under any light conditions, can be manufactured at a comparatively low sition, as indicated in Figsrl and 2. However, when light conditions are poor the reflector 22 is elevated to the position indicated in Fig. 4, at which time the lighting circuit of the light globe 24: is automatically closed by its terminal 25 being brought into contact with the conductor 20, which latter is in conmg of the reflector 22, the light circuit willbe automatically opened.

Renewal of the battery 19 is effected by opening the door 16 removing the worn battery from the compartment 15 and replacing same with a fresh battery, it being here understood that a batter of any convenient shape and size may e employed in our device.

Actual experience has shown and demonstrated that a vanity case fabricated in the manner herein shown and described isvery eflicient under adverse light conditions, inasmuch as the globe 24 with its reflector 22 provides ample illumination for the face of the user to enable the latter to properly apply the cosmetics.

In the appended claim, the term vanity case is to be construed to include any device which may be employed for beautifying pur- 25 P oses.

Manifestly, therefore, the deviceof the present invention is extremely simple, compact, durable and economical in construction, is eflicient, positive and reliable in use, and

cost.

While we have herein shown and described the invention with sufl'icient detail to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand the mode of construction and the principles involved, it is to be understood that there is no intentional limitation herein to the specific form and precise details of construction shown and described, except as expressly defined by the appended claim, and that various modifications of the same may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the benefits derivable therefrom. It is also to be understood that certain features of the invention herein disclosed may be employed in and with other combinations than those shown and described.

What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
