OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN TABLET r'on ARI/ CHAIRS Application filed December 12, 1930. Serial No. 501,755.
The objects of the invention are: on line 77 of Fig. 6, showing details of the First; to provide a chair arm with a foldslide construction of the adjustable sliding able, collapsible table adapted to be conportionof the tablet and the hooked stops cealed within the arm of the chair when for the hinged part. 7 I .5 not in use. A preferred 1 is the chair arm. 2 is .thetop finishembodiment of the invention is illustrated ing strip therefor, part 21 being divided 70 in the accompanying drawings, in which: therefrom and formingthe top portion of Fig. 1 is a detail perspective viewof a the tablet when it is concealed within the. portion of a chair and chair arm with a arm of the chair. 3 is ametallic box-like tablet in folded position, its general relation casing or housing inserted into the arm of 25 within the arm being indicated-by dotted the chair, open at the top and having lat- 7 I lines. I l tical position the pivoting of the hinged 210- The main tablet 5 is formed of sheet metal tion being. indicated by dotted lines. like a shallow boX open on its under side with Fig. 5 is a similar enlarged detail sectional aretaining frame 51 carrying a leather or view on the said line H of Fig. 3, showfiber top 52. Thisis pivoted at 53- to uping the tablet in position and not extended wardly extending ears 44 formed by the upfor use on top of the arm, a portion only of per ends of the frame-sides 4. The frame 4 the arm being shown. is provided with a flange 42 which is cut off on the irregular line 6-6 of Fig. 9, showwhen it is turned down, as indicated by the ing details of construction of the collapsed lower dotted lines in Fig. 4 and by the full parts, a small portion of the arm only being lines in Figs. 5 and 6.
shown to indicate the relation of the parts. Ears44 are also provided with hook en- 50 Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view gaging stop parts 45 which engage apertures 1 54 in the said tablet, thereby locking the same securely in place.
From this it will be seen that the user grasps the section 21 at the side of his chair, as seen in Fig. 1, raises it to the elevated position, as seen in Fig. l, hinges it down to the horizontal position and drops it back into the housing, when the slide will be securely retained, as seen in Figs. 5 and 6. The slide 6 can then be drawn out t'o-thefull frontposition, as seen in Fig. 2, making a tablet of considerable size for the use and without objectionable overhang beyond the side of the chair.
I have shownthepivot at about A of the length. It couldbe half or even more if space saving becameiinportant. The slide being pulled out gives a long broad arm-rest for a hooker document and serves the purpose for each individual better than the space at a big directors table.
I have shown the top with-afinishroll 21 to conceal its position in the arm, but this part, of course,'rnight be dispensed with.
While I have shown the tops of tablets finished with. leather Orptlrerfinishing material, the. same mightibe l'eftiplaim'but the sheet metal con'struction'lends itself especially well tothe finish shown.
The housing'could bemade' use of with any sort'of an arm,.but I have-shown it-withan upholstered arm with-the housing concealed within the upholstery.
Where only a. small tabletds.required, the slide extension'mightbe omitted.
I desire to claim'the invent-ioninthespe cific form illustrated, which is especially effective and very neat in appearance, andl also desire to elaimithe invention broadly as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having: thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. The combination of an arm chair, a
box-like housingwithin the arm open at the top and flanged for attachment .to-the arm, a slidable frame disposed within the housing and adapted to extend to the bottom thereof, having a cross bar and upwardly extending flanged bar arm's terminating in attaching ears and being provided with hooked stops and having the flange portion notched to afford steps, a pivoted box-like tablet open on its under side and pivotedto the upwardly extending ears and adapted to swing in alignment with the said housing and be dropped into the same and adapted-to turn crosswise and engage the stops and rest upon the top of said arm, a slide formed like an open-ended open-bottom box with flange portions engaging the said pivoted tablet adapted to slide and collapse over the same,
stop means formed tolimit the outward movement of said slide, and a finish strip on the outer edge of said slide adapted when the slide is collapsed and folded into the arm to *give a finish to the armof the chair.
2. The combination of an arm chair, a box-like housing within the arm open at the top and flanged for attachment to the arm, a slidable frame disposed within the housing and adaptedto extend to the botnotched to afford steps, a pivoted box like tablet open on its under side and pivotedto the upwardly extending ears and adapted to swing in alignment with the-said housing and be dropped into the-same, and adapted to-turn crosswise and engage the stops and restupon the top of said arm, a slide formed like an open-ended open-bottom box with flange portions engaging the said pivoted tablet adapted-to slide and collapse over the same, and stop means formed to limit the outward movement of said slide.
3. The combinationof an arm chair, a boxlike housing within the arm open at the top and flanged for attachment to the arm, a
slidable frame disposed within the housing i and adapted to extend to the bottom threof, having a cross bar and upwardly extending flanged bar arms terminating in attaching ears and bein-g provided with hooked stops and having'the'flange portion notched to afford stops, and a pivoted box-like tablet open on-its under side and-pivoted to the upward- 1y extending ears and adapted to swing in alignment with the said housing and be droppedinto the same, and adapted to turn crosswise andv engage the stops and. rest upon the top of said arm.
In witness whereof I have hereunto setmy hand.
FRED TOBEY.
