distance and which also will be attractive or ornamental to a casual observer.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a novel mounting for the sign to the vehicle which permits convenient application and removal of the latter from the vehicle and also is designed to cooperate with the illuminatingmeans of the sign so that an electric circuit will be completed between an electrical source and said illuminating means when the sign is installed on the vehicle.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a sign of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and emcient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had tothe following description and accompanying drawings, in
which 1931. Serial no. 546,604.
wall 2 and side walls 3 provided with marginal flanges 4 forming a seat for a semi-transparent, panel 5 on which characters forming advertisements'may be coated or otherwise applied. A frame 6 overlies the edges of the panel 5 and has abutting engagement with flanges 7 formed integral with themarginal flanges 4.- of the casing and which are disposed at right angles thereto with the edges of the panel spaced slightly therefrom so that a suitable packing strip 8 may be positioned over the edges of the panel to establish a leakproof connection'between the casing, frame and panel. t
Integral ears 9 are formed on the frame 6 and are apcrtured to receive fasteners 10 which also extend through apertured flanges 11 formed on the ends of substantially U- shaped brackets 12. The arm portions of the brackets 12 snugly fit oppositely disposed sides of the casing 1 and havethe bight portions spaced from the rear wall 2 as clearly shown in Figure 3.
The rear wall 2 of the casing 1 is provided with pairs of openings over which are secured electric lamp sockets 13 receivingelectric lamps 14 disposed within the casing and have their terminals in abutting engagement with clips 15'connectedtogether by conductorslfl and one of said conductors is 0011- F1? nected to a contact plate 17 mounted upon one of the brackets 12. The brackets 12 adjacent their upper ends are provided with slots 18 to receive hook shaped elemcn ts 19 secured to a wall or portion 20 of a motor vehicle. One of the hooks 19 has an electrical conductor 21 attached thereto and which forms a portion of an electric circuit from an electrical source while the other conductor 22 of said circuit is grounded to the casing 1 as shown in Figure 2. The hook shaped element 19 which has the conductor 21 connected thereto abuts the contact plate 17 when the device is placed upon the vehicle thus completing an electric circuit to the electric lamps 14 for the purpose of illuminating the advertisement on the panel 5. The hook 19 which has the conductor 21 connected thereto is insulated from the respective bracket 12 and the contact plate 17 is also insulated from 1 said bracket. The electric lamps are arranged in pairs and one pair is arranged laterally of the other pair as shown in Figure'2 for the purpose of permitting the lamps .to more evenly illuminate the panel through- I out its width and length. I I Brackets 23 are'provided with attaching portions 24 bolted or otherwise secured to the portion 20 of the vehicle and each is provided with a spring arm 25provided with a curved portion 26 adapted to engage under thelugs 9 and flanges 11 cooperating with c the hook-shaped elements 19 in firmly at-5 taching the sign to the vehicle and which will permit the'sign to be easily removed from the vehicle when desired. v From vthe foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that avery efficient sign has 20 been provided-whereby the advertisement carried thereby may be effectively illuminated and which may be easily and conveniently applied and removed from the vehicle and when applied, completes an electric 'cire cuit between the lamps and electrical source.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will i be understood thatminor changes'in coni struction, combination and arrangement of v i 39 parts may be made without departing from' the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed. 7 r I p c Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim is: V
A sign comprisin a casing, a character bearing panel carried by said casing, illuminating lamps in, said casing, brackets for said casing and having slots, hook shaped elements engaging in said'slots and secured to I a vehicle and one of said elements connected to an electrical circuit, electrical means con-' 5 necting the lamps,a contact plate carried by I one of the brackets and electrically connected to one of said lampsand adapted to engage the hook shaped element connected in e the electrical circuit, said electrical circuit 7 connected tothe casing to provide an electri cal return from the circuit, and meanssecured to the vehicle and engaging the casing. for cooperating. with the'hook shaped elementsin 1 securing the casing to the vehicle. g In testimony whereofI 'affix my signature. HORAN OHANIAN.
