Description

April 5, 1932- J. HALBERSTADTER SUPPORT FOR FLOWERPOTS AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. '7, 1929' a m WEI INVENTOR Patented Apr. 5, 1932 LINITED STATES J'UDA HALBERSTADTER, 0F ELIZAFETH, NEW "JERSEY SUPPORT FOR FLOWEREOTS AND THE LIKE Application filed August 7, 1929. :Seria1 No.. 384,148.
This invention relates to improvement-s in flower pot supports and has for one of its objects to provide an improved support of simple, practical and economical construction by means of which a flower pot or like receptacle may be mounted in a vertical position upon a window sill.
Another object is to provide a bracket for the support which can be conveniently attached to a slanting window sill and upon which is mounted a spacing element engageable with the slanting portion of the sill and movable relative to a part of said bracket to adjust said part to a horizontal position and aid in maintaining the same in such position;
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the supporting device of the present invention, showing the same attached to a sill;
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partly in section;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a bracket which may be used; and
Figure 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the manner in which the device may be attached to a sill, railing or other support when the bracket of the device is not employed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates a window sill of ordinary construction having the usual slanting surface 6 and riser 6.
The device of the present invention comprises an angle bracket 7 made of any suitable material and having the right angular portions 8 and 9 the former of which is provided with two openings 10 and the latter with a single opening 10' for securing the bracket in place.
When using the device with a sill having an inclined surface, it is necessary that the portion 8 of the bracket should be disposed in a horizontal plane. To adjust it to this position there is provided a spacing member justed position, 7
11, in the form of a strip, slidably mounted for adjustment alongthe portion 8 by means of clips 12 at the ends of said strip engaging over the end edges of said portion as best shown in Fig. 3. The bottom section 13 of said strip,'which is adapted to engage the surface 6 of the sill, is diagonally disposed relativeto theportion 8 and as the spacing member is-moved back and forth-along said portion, it will be apparent that the latter can be adjusted to a horizontal position.
:With this accomplished, the screws 14: are driven into the'sill through the openings 10 and 10 and the bracket is thus secured in ad- 7 r The front portion 9 of the bracket has secured thereon by rivets 14' a plate 15 having an ofli'set portion 15 forming with the portion 9 a socket which is adaptedto receive the depend1ng extensions 16 of a pot-supporting -member 17. After said extensions are in place, a set screw 18 is threaded through the plate 15 and into the socket and engages the extensions, thereby clamping the member 17 in place. Said member 17 is preferably made from a singlestrip of metal bent into rectangular formto provide atop section or bar 18 which will be located in a plane above the highest portion of the sill 6 so as to permit the flower pot 19 supported thereby to over- 550 hang said sill with its center of gravity positioned inwardly of the outer edge of the sill. Said flower pot is adapted to rest within a holder 19 mounted upon said bar 18. The lower portion of the member 17 rests directly 335 upon the portion 8 of the bracket and is disposed between and engaged by the inner ends of the clips 12 so as to maintain said member 17 in a steady position on the bracket. A disk 20, having a layer 20' of rubber or other soft material on the upper surface, is secured to the bar 18 by means of a bolt 21 which ex tends through the bottom of the holder 19 and by providing said layer 20 which engages the bottom side of said holder, and a similar layer 22 on the inner side of the holder bottom, it will be apparent that when the bolt 21 is secured in place, the pressure exerted, by the tightening of the bolt nut, against the holder 19, which may be made of porcelain 33100 or the like, will not have as much tendency to break or crush said holder. Also secured in position by the bolt 21, is a supporting plate 23 in which the head of the bolt is countersunk and upon which the flower pot 19 is adapted to rest when placed within the holder 19.
In Figure A,.it:is shownhow-the member 17 may he =mounted without employing the bracket 7. In this instance, the extensions 16 are secured directly to a fence rail or other similar support lo y'sorews 25.
