TOY
Filed Jan. 16, 1930 INVENTOR. Geo 7&2) fiedeflbl BY ATTORNEY.
Patented Mar. 22, 1932 PATENT GEORGE :o. FREDERICK, onnETRoIT, rlrromornn TOY Application filed January 16, 1930. Serial No. 421,154.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, and refers more particularly to rocking toys for exercising.
It is an object of the invention to provide a toy having a member pivotally mounted and adapted to swing up and down, and to provide both a seat and stirrups at diiferent distances from the axis of the member, and a spring which exerts upward pressure against the underside of the member intermediately of its length, so that when the rider throws his weight on the seat the member moves downwards and compresses the spring, and when the rider throws a portion of his weight upon the stirrups the spring swings the member upwardly about its axis.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a toy wherein provision is made for setting the spring at-varying distances from the axis of the member so that it may be positioned to offset riders of different weights.
With these and other objects and advantages in view which will become apparent as the specification proceeds the invention is hereinafter more fully described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of the invention, and
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figures 3 and 4 show enlarged details of the mounting arrangement of the upper and lower ends of the spring. V
Figure 5 is an enlarged plan view of the upper spring plate, with a portion of the 5 spring in section, and the supporting meansfor the said plate.
Figure 6 is an enlarged inverted plan view of the lower spring plate and the supporting means therefor, showing a portion of the sprlng in section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base plate preferably supported at its extremities on rests 2. Extending upwardly from the plate 1 adjacent one end of the latter is a support 3 the lower extremity of which is preferably flexed horizontally at 4. The horizontally flexed portion a is secured to the base plate 1. To the support 3 adjacent its upper end one portion of a hinge 5 is so secured that its other portion may swing about a' horizontal axis. The said other hinge portion is fastened to one end of a member 6 which extends longitudinally over the base plate 1. At the outer free end of the said member a seat 7 is formed, depending from the member on both its sides and intermediately of its length are rigid stirrups 8, and extending upwardly from the member also intermediately of its length is a projection 9. The latter is preferably positioned substan tially centrally of the width of the said member 6 and, in the present instance is shaped'to present the appearance of an 'animals head. Laterally from this projection opposed handles 10 extend.
The stirrups. 8 preferably consist offla metal strips flexed inwardly attheir upper extremities for attachment to the member 8 and'flexed outwardly at their lower extremities 8b to provide foot rests. The projection 9 isusually supported-on the member 6 by angle plates 9a. 1 7
Against the underside of the member 6 in-' termediately of its length-two parallel spacing members 11 are longitudinallyarranged,
and under the spacing members 11 two parallel guides 12 are secured. It will be noted that the adjacent sides of the spacing members 11 are positioned further apart than the 1 adjacent sides of the guides 12. 14 designates a-spring'the ends of which are secured, usually'welded, to an upper-and a lower slide 1 and 19 respectively. The upper slide 15 restsagainst the undersides ofthe guides 12. Bolts 17, the heads 17 a of whi'chlie between the spacing members 11, extend downwardly between the guides 12 and through; apertures formed through the slide 15 towards its ends and substantially centrally of its width, and have nuts 18 secured to their lower extremities. In the base plate 1 a longitudinal recess 1a is formed intermediately of its length. 011 the plate a pair of parallelguides' are longitudinally arranged so that their adjacent margins extend over the margins of the slot 1a. The lower slide 19 is slidable on the guides 20. Bolts 21, the heads 21a of which lie in the recess'la, extend upwardly between 100 the guides 20 and through apertures formed through the slide 19 towards its ends and substantially centrally of its width; these bolts 21 have nuts 22 secured to their extremities.
By loosening the nuts 18 and 22 the slides 15 and 19 may be so set that the spring 14 bears against the underside of the member 6 at varying distances from the hinge 5. Thus the toy may be adjusted for use by children of vastly diflerent weights. It will also be noted that the stirrups 8 are so positioned that a rider may readily throw his weight onto them and off the seat 7 thereby lessens ing the leverage on the spring 14 and permitting the latter to swing the member 6 upwardly.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such alterations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a toy of the character described, the combination of a base, a member pivotally mounted thereover to swing about a horizontal axis, guides arranged longitudinally on the underside of said member, other guides arranged longitudinally on said base, a spring, slides secured to its extremities, one slide being movable longitudinally on the guides on the underside of said member and the other slide being longitudinally movable along the guides on said base, and a seat on said member.
2. In a toy of the character described, the combination of a base, a member pivotally mounted thereover to swing about a horizon tal axis, a seat adjacent the outer end of said member, opposed stirrups depending from said member between its pivotal mounting and said seat, handles carried above said member, guides arranged longitudinally on said base, other uides arranged longitudinally on said member, a spring, a slide secured to each end of said spring, each slide being longitudinally movable on one set of guides, and separate means cooperating with each slide for securing it at the desired position along the member or base.
jacent the outer end of said member, a slide movable longitudinally on said base, a second slide longitudinally movable on the underside of said member, a spring each extremity of which is secured to one of said slides, and separate means for holding each slide against accidental movement relative to its member or base.
e. In a toy of the character described, the combination of a base, an upright mounted thereon, a member pivoted on said upright
