CLAMPS FOR QUILTING FRAMES. No.184,957. Patented-D ec.5,1876.
- IIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH @1911 Y a a v I I IL i Q f 'NrrE STATES PATENT FFroa.
ISSAGHAR W. DOEG, .OF NEW MARKET, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR QUILTING-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,957, dated December 5, 1876 application filed November 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISSAGHAR W. DOEG, of New Market, in the county of Rockingham, in the State of New Hampshire, have made certain Improvements in Clamps for Quilting- Fraines, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention it to place in the hands of every person using a quilting frame the means to hold the frame at any desired height, and at the same time allow the side and end pieces that form the frame to be rolled with the quilt as fast as it is quilted, so that such portions as are not quilted will be brought within the reach of the quilter; and it consists in the construction of the clamp and its application to the' frame and supports, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top View of the clamp, and one corner of the frame and its support; and Fig. 2 represents a horizontal or side view of same.
A represents the body of the clamp, with jaws A and A, while that part of the jaw A marked a is made to be a screw-nut to receive the thumb-screw a, and allow it to freely turn therein, with a button, a, on its upper end. B is a projection from the body A of the clamp, and with which, by its peculiar construction, an eye or vertical opening, B, is made to receive the leg or support 0, that sustains the quadrangular frame at each corner, and to which the quilt is held by stitching or looping, and the horizontal part projecting from the body A forms a screw-nut for a holding-screw to force a sliding clamp, 1), against the leg and hold it in place. G is the vertical leg or support at each corner of the frame that passes through the eye or opening B in the 'clamp, and in which eye the support or leg can be freely adjusted, so as to bring the frame and the quilt to the desired height, and when so adjusted the thumbscrew-b is revolved in the screw-nut projection B, and forces the angular or other clamp b hard upon the leg 0. The support 0 is shown square in cross-section; but it is evident that it and the eye B may be of other shapes and carry out the principles of the invention. D and E represent two of the four as to be easily detached. These bars D and E are clamped between the jaws A and A by the thumb-screw a, working in screw-nut a, forcing the clamping-button a hard against the under side of one of the rails D or E.
. By this construction of clamp the frame is adjusted to any desired height, and held securely there, and the bars of the frame can be released from the holding-clamp, and all sides of the frame and quilt can be rolled after being quilted, to bring that part of the quilt that is not quilted within reach of the quilters, and then be again clamped to hold all sides, to'strain the quilt properly for easy quilting. A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is I 1. In a quilting-frame clamp, the combination of the jaws A and A, clamping-screw a, with the eye B, projection B, sliding clamp b, and holding-screw b, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the clamp A, constructed as described, and the supports 0,
with the rails D and E of quilting-frames, as and for the purposes described.
