Description

Fgb. 9, 1932. I T. B. DEW-ETT 1,844,924
BOAT
Filed Dec. 9, 1930 INVENTOR THOMZIJ B. DEWETT.
ATTO RN EY Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES THOMAS IB. DEWETT, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS Application filed December 9, 1930. Serial No. 501,066.
My invention relates to foldable boats and more particularly to waterproof boats; and the object is to provide boats of superior construction and which can be easily assembled,
' and easily knocked-down for transportation purposes and which will be strong anddurable and safe in operation. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Fig. 1 a side elevation of the boat.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a broken perspective.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section.
Fig. 6 is a broken perspective view of the sheet metal bottom.
Fig. 7 is a broken section of the upper right corner of Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The improved boat has a water-proof canvas bottom 1 which is protected by a metallic shield 2. The shield 2 is in two parts hinged together and is to be used only in places where it mi ht be snagged or damaged by rough usage. The parts of the shield are connected by a hinge 3. The short end of the shield is I connected on the front part of the boat by hooks 15. At the rear part of the boat, the shield is caught between the bar 14 and the end of the boat. The bar 14: may be used to support a motor. To remove the shield,
"1- first remove bolts from the bar 14. The
shield can then be unhooked from the hooks 15. The principal parts making up the frame are thesides 10. At one end, the rear end,"
the bar 14 secures the canvas covering and the shield 2 to the ends of the side members ing partitions 6 are mounted between vertical guides 7 which areattached to the slides 10 andqwhich rest on'longitudinal bars 8 which'are attached to the sides 10. Cross braces 5'rest on the partitions 5' and on supports 9 which are flush with the tops of the partitions 6 and are attached to the sides 10. The braces '5 and the partitions 6 are removable for folding purposes. The braces 5 serve for supports 18. The partitions 6 hold the sides 10 extended and the braces 5 prevent longitudinal movement of the sides 10 relative to each other. The sides 10 are clamped on the partitions 6 by means of rods 17 and turnbuckles 16. The rods 17 are detachably connected to eye-bolts 19 which project through the sidesv 10. The passage for the bolts 19 are sealed by washers 20 and nuts 21.
A supporting platformll is suspended above the canvas bottom 1 and in close proximity thereto. The platform 11 is supported by rods 12 which are bent about the partitions 6 and run down through the platform 11 and. under a portion thereof and then back up through the platform and secured to the partitions 6. The platform 11 protects the canvas bottom 1. The occupants walk on the platform 11 instead of onthe canvas 1.
The boat is foldable by reducing the same to' knock-down condition. The boat is reduced to knockdown condition by loosening the bar 14 so that the sheet metal shield 2 can be removed. Then loosen the turnbuckles 16 so that the rods 17 may be unhooked from the bolts19. The braces 5and the partitions 6 can then be taken down and placed in the boat and the sides folded inwardly.
boat. I The canvasl may be securely held in place by metallic strips 4 which are nailed on the canvas with the nails driven into the side members 10.
Floats 25 may be attached to the sides 10. These floatsmay be inflated bags of suitable material and used to prevent the boat from turning over;
What I claim is,
1. A boat having rigid longitudinal side members, a flexible waterproof foldable member attached to said side members and form- The 1 sides willv hold the knock-down parts in the.
ing the bottom and ends of the boat, detachable interior bracing members holding said side members spaced apart, and a shield detachably attached to said boat for protecting said flexible member.
2. A boat having rigid longitudinal side members. a flexible waterproof foldable member attached to said side members and forming the bottom and ends of the boat, detachable partitions bracing and holding said side members spaced apart, and adjustable detachable means for clamping said side members on said partitions and means for protecting the bottom of said waterproof member.
3. A boat having rigid longitudinal side members, a flexible waterproof foldable member attached to said side members and forming the bottom and ends of the boat, detachable partitions bracing and holding said side members spaced apart, and cross braces resting on said partitions and cooperating therewith and preventing longitudinal movement of said side members relative .to each other.
4. A boat having rigid longitudinal side members, a flexible Waterproof foldable member attached to said side members and forming the bottom and ends of the boat, detachable artitions bracing and holding said side mem rs spaced apart, means for holding said partitions in upright positions, and cross braces resting on said partitions and cooperating therewith and preventing longitudinal movement of said side members relative to each other.
5. A boat having rigid longitudinal side members, a flexible waterproof foldable member attached to said side members and forming the bottom and ends of the boat, detachable partitions bracing and holding said sides spaced apart, means for holding said partitions in upright positions, a detachable platform for protecting said flexible member, and means for suspending said platform on said partitions.
6. A boat having rigid longitudinal side members, a flexible waterproof foldable member attached to said side members and forming the bottom and ends of the boat, detachable partitions bracing and holding said side members spaced apart, upper and lower longitudinal bars and vertical bars attached to said side members for holding said partitions in upright position, cross braces supported on said partitions and upper. longitudinal bars and bracing said side members against longitudinal movement relative to each other, and means for clamping said side members against said partitions.
In testimony whereoef, I set my hand, this 24th day of October, 1930.
