NI'IED {STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN H. DAVIS, OF OOVINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF EIS RIGHT T0 FREDERIGK J. MEYERS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CNDUCTORSv PUNCHES.
Speoification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 184,463, dated November 21, 1876; applioationfiled September 27, 1876.
T0 all whom it mag; concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. DAVIS, 0f Covington, Kanton county, Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conductors Pnnches, of whioh the following is a speoifieation:
This invention relates t0 that dass of punohes employed by railroad-conduotors am]. others for perforating tiekets, passes, oheoks, &e.; and the first part of my improvexnents consists in providing thehead of the implemenl; with a tapering key, disposed transversely 0t' the plunger. 'lhis key bears against a flat face of said plunger, and thereby assists in confining the latter to a vertical path in the head of the device. Furthermore, said key is eapable of being sei; up to compensate for any wear either of' the key 0r plnnger.
The second parl: of myinvention consists in slotting one of the ja-ws of the implement, and applying transversely of said. slot a pin, to whioh the plunger is attached. A spiral 01 other suitable spring er elastio cushion is titted in said slotted jaw or handle, so as to bear against the pin; and when t;he punoh is operated said spring yields, and thereby prevents any binding of the plunger within the head 0f che implement.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showin g rny improved punch in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same closed. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged. seotional views, taken, respectively, at the lines Y Y and Z Z. Fig. 5 is a. vertioal section through the upper end of the plunger and its aocessories. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the plunger detached frorn the implement, and Fig. 7 represents a modifica.tion of the inventio'n.
A represents the head of tl1e implement, fro1n which projeots the oustoxnary ourved handle A, of any oonvenient shape and size. 'lhis head is provided with the customary horizontal slot B, that reoeives the 'tiokeb er Slip to be punohed. A flarii1g mouth, b, facilinahes the insertion of tickets, passes, &o., into said slolz. Head A is provided with a vertical mortise or groove, G, whioh is 11013 carried down as f2u aus slot B; and said groove has fitted witahin lt a vibrating lever, D, whose rear end or handle D is bent into any convenient shape. The freut end of lever D.is retained in the groove 0 by n1eans of a pivot, E, applied transversely 0f the herd A.- Furthermore, this lever is slotted ab d to "reoeive a pin, F, wherewith the plunger G is coupled to said lever. This plunger is composed of a. round bar of steel er einher hard metal, and oarries ab its lower end the punoh 0r perforator, H, which punch may be made in one pieoe with said plunger; or it may be screwed into or otherwise attadhed te the seune. The punoh H may be shaped 110 cut apertures of any (lesirecl form; or it; rnay be adaped to perforate the tioket with numerals, or witl1 any selected cornbination of numerals. 'lhis plunger is Gut away 011 its front-side, thereby producing a flat vertical surface, g, .againsl: which one edge of tlie tapering key I bears, and thus prevents any rotation ot' said plunger within the chambered portion a of the head; Plunger G is gained,g, at it;s upper end 110 admit: che lever D.
Interposed between pin F and the front end of slot d is a spring or yielding cnshion, K, whioh oonnpresses readily when the handles A and D are caused to approach eaoh other. These handles eure maintain'ed in their normal positions by a spring, L, that oooupies a chambar, a, in the head of the implement.
A shoulder or stop, c, ab the front end of groove C, limits the opening of levers A D. Fitted. in the head A is a die, M, of any Suitable hard metal, seid die being maintained in line with plunger G by upsetting the metal aronnd. said die, as seen ab m in Fig. 3. Located. beneath die M is a downwardly-fiaring aperture, N, through whioh the punohings drop.
When the implement is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. -1, the spring L distends the levers or handles A D, the shoulder o limiting the opening of said levers. In this eondibion of the implement the plunger G is elevated far enough to raise the punch .11 above the top of slot B, and thereby afl'ord an unobstruoted passage for the inseraion of he tioket; 0r other artiole to be punohed. The tioket is then inserted in the slob, and punched in Ehe usual manner by causing the two handles A am] D to approaoh each other, whioh ach drives the device H through die M, end
thus perforates'the tieket.
.the same time the free vertical movement; of
plunger G is not interfered Wibh. When handle D is liberated spring L disteuds the le Vers A end D, end the plunger G is elevated vertically within the head A a.
While this elevation 0f seid plunger is 0ecurring, the tension of spring K is gradually relaxing, end by the time levers A D are fully distended, seid spring has foreed the piu F to the rear end of slot d, es seen in Fig. 5.
From the above deseription it will be appareni; that the provision 0f devices d F K permits the levers A end D bein'g opened end closed with the utmost faeility, while et; the same time the plunger G is confined 120 a vertical pa-th within.the head, end consequently the puueh H can never be injured by contaet with die M.
Tl1is peculiarity of construetion 'renders my implement mueh more efi'eetive end durable then those devices in which tl1e puneh is applied directly 130 0ne end 0f a pivoted handle. This old method of construetion eauses the puneh 150 move in the am of a cirele, end es soon es t;he pivot becomes worn the punch is liable 110 eome in contacl: with the die, end be broken 01 bent. During the ascent' end descent of plunger G the key I bears against the freut fiel: surface g of seid plunger, end thereby prevents any rotation 0f the latter Within its soeket a. This provision 0f t he flat;
guide I insures the aecurate passege 0f puneh H thiough die M, end if, an any time, theplunger or key should become worn, the letzter cen then be driven in far enough to eompensate for such wear. After the keyhas beien readjusted it ean be retained in its new position by simply upsetting the m'etal 0f frame A eround the larger end er head 0f seid key.
E. 0 is a pivot wherewith the up'per end of seid link is coupled 1:0 the lever D D er the pin F may treverse a. slot of such shape es to allow the spring 01 cus'nion K beingomitted. Furthermore, a eonieal serew may be substituted f0i tl1e tapering er wedge guide I, end, in some-cases, two or more er" such screws 0r guides may be employed for e single plunger.
This elabomtion of the invention will be espeeially epplicable where eonsiderable stroke is required f0r plunger G.
I elaim es my invention 1 l. In eombination with the vertieally-reeiproea.ting plunger G H, heving e flat f2we, g, the adjustable guide I, substantially es herein deseribed end sei; forth.
2. [Ehe combination,in aconduetors puneh, 0f the slotted end grooved head A A B O, pivoted end slotted lever D d D E, pin F, plunger G, am]. compensating deviee K, substantielly es herein described end sei: f0ith.
3. An improved conduetors puneh, consisting, essentiallyof.iithe slotted, grooved, end
ehambered head A a, a/ B C, pivoted lever D dD E, plunger FG gH, guide I, compensatii1g defiee K, retracting-spring L, end die M, when arranged with rei'ereuee 130 eaeh other, subsentially es herein deseribed end set forth.
In testimony of whieh invention I hereuuto Set my band.
. JOHN H. DAVIS. Witnesses:
JAMES H. LAYMAN, FREI). J. MEYERS.
