Description
Feb. 9, 1932. J. R. SCHALK DEMOUNTABLE AWNING SUPPORT Filed May 19, 1928 INVENTOR. Jacob Rapper? 50mm,
Patented Feb. 9, 1932 JACOB RUPPERT SCHALK, OF RHINEBECK, NEW YORK DEMOUNTABLE AWNING SUPPORT Application filed May 19,
This inventirm relates to a demountable awning support, of that class where it is desired at times to disjoint the supports as in the case of awnings on vcsse and yachts,
twhere the supports for the awning are so close together that a small boat can not be swung outward for launching between two adjacent awning supports.
The objects of the invention to provide an awning support, that may be readily and quickly demounted or disjointed and temporarily removed and. without the use of tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide an awning support, in which the joint or lock shall be simple, durable and eiiicient and not destroy the looks 01 the support, as would be the case should the usual pipe coupling or union be employed, or other external clampingmeans.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in a certain novel construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accom ninying drawings, which form a part hereof and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, but it is fully understood that slight changes may he made with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1. illustrates a portion of the rail of a vessel, showing the awning supports, and one of the same in a demountcd position.
Figure 2 shows a vertical sectional view of portions oi the awning support adjacent to their joint, and showing the locking means employed.
Figure 3 is a side View 01 the same, but not in section.
Figure 4 shows a cross sectional view, taken on the line AA of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a similar view, taken on the line lil3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, and to Figure 1 a portion oi a bulwark 10, is shown, to which are secured the ail stauchions 11, on which is mounted the rail 12; and to the upper ends of said stanchions 11 are secured the awning supports which are tubular and comprise two 1928. Serial No. 279,180.
The common practice in securing together the two parts of a demountable awning sup port, is to have a plug rigidly secured in one end of one part, and adapted to enter the end of the other parts and be secured therein by a pin passed through the side walls and through said plug.
Now referring to Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings; the oint or locking means comprises a tubular casting or member 16 which is secured in the lower end of the awning support part 14, by the rivets 17 or other suitable means such as screws, and projects from the end of the part 14, and is adapted to enter the upper end of the awning part 13 completing a splice of the joints, and allowing of their being demounted.
In the side wall of the tubular member 16 are formed two holes 18 and 19, which register With two similar holes formed in the side wall of the awning parts 13 and 14.
The inner side of the tubular member 16 is provided with a pair of ears 20,, within which is pivoted 011 the pin 21, a latch arm 22, which extends upward, and is formed with a locking pin 23 adapted to enter the hole 19, and a push pin 24 adapted to enter the hole 18 and project slightly from the side of the awning support part 14.
To retain this latch arm in a normally locked position, there is provided a spring 25, which is mounted on a pin 26 projecting inwardly from the member 16 and a similar pin 27 formed on said arm 22, or any other suit-' able form of spring may be used for the purpose; and it is to be understod that the awning supports may be of any suitable shape in cross section, and do not have to be round as shown.
In operation and use, the two parts 13 and 14 of the awning support are retained together in a locked manner by the tubular plug and the linger operated latch and pin, and when it is desired to demount the same, the finger pin 24 is pressed inward until the locking pin 23 is receded from the hole in the part 13, when the part 14 may be raised and removed from the part 13, the cable 26 allowing the awning part 14 to be raised as shown and at the same time retaining it from loss, as it can be moved to one side out of the way as indicated in Figure 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a demountable joint for awning supports, comprising in combination with two abutting tubular members, of a lockmg unit.
designed to be permanently secured in the end of one member and projecting therefrom and adapted to be secured within the abutting end of. the other member in a detachable manner andcomprising a tubular unit formed with a pair of orifices in the side thereof adaptedwhen in an attachedposition to register with a. pair of orifices formed in the tubular members,- apair. of ears formed on the inner face of said unit, an L-shaped latch having a long arm and a short arm parallel with each other and adapted to enter the orifices in both the unit and the tubular memhere for locking said members together, one end of said latch pivoted within said ears, and'a spring-having one end bearing against said. latch andthe other end bearing against the wallof said unitfor retaining said latch in anormally locked position.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAGOB RUPPERT' SGHALK.
