The primary object of the invention is to provide a tailors chalk sharpener wherein sharpening rolls are relatively adjustable toward and away from each other to vary the thickness of the sharpened edge of the chalk,
with guide means for the chalk upon the sharpening rolls shiftable relative to the rolls to present an edge of the chalkabove onev of the` rolls for cutting the chalk to a straight edge.
A `further object of the invention is to provide a device of the foregoing character wherein roller brushes `are associated with the` sharpening rolls for cleaning the latter,

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there `is illustrated a sharpening machine for tailors chalk com# walls 2 and end walls 3, the bottoni wall l having openings 4 therein adjacent its edges to receive tongue extensions 5 depending from the lower edges of the side and end walls to center the casing frame on the base plate. The open upper end of the casing frame is closed by arenlovable cover Ghavlng a relatively wide longitudinally extending opening 7 therein as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, the cover resting upon the upper edges of the side and end walls. The sharpening mechanism is supported above the bottom plate 1 upon a chamber as shown in Figure 5 that is defined by perpendicular end and side walls 8 and a top wall 9, the chamber providing a compartment for the sliding drawer 10 that receives chalk shavings and being removable through an opening in a side wall of the casing frame by the handle and knob 11 as shown in Figures 1 and 3. End lugs 12 are carried by the end walls of the chamber as shown in Figure 5 and screws 13 passed through a side wall 2 in the casing frame adjacent the lower ends, are engaged withthe lugs12 for retaining the casing frame in position on the base plate 1.
The sharpening machine is adapted to be placed into clamping engagement with a table top, bench or other support, an angle clamp 14 of U-shape having one leg thereof secured to the under side of the base plate 1 with a clamping screw 15 fitted to the other leg.
A U-shaped mechanism supporting frame is mounted upon the top wall 9 of the chamber forming the drawer compartment and includes a bottom wall 16 carrying perpendicular end walls 17 and 18, this frame being secured to front wall 9 by screws 19 or other fastening devices. rThe bottom wall 16 of the frame and the top wall 9 of the chamber are provided with registering longitudinally extending openings 20 to facilitate the passage therethrough of chalk shavings.r The chalk sharpening apparatus includes sharpening rolls, cleaning brushes therefor and drive shaft, the drive shaft being journaled through the end walls 17 rand 18 of the U- shaped frame, while bearing arm attached to the end walls 17 and 18 provide bearing support for the sharpening rolls and brushes. Pairs of bracket arms 21 and 22 rise perpendicularly from each end wall 17 and 18, the bracket arms 21 being engaged with the inner faces of the end walls 17 and 18 and fixed thereto by screws 23 or similar fastening devices and to provide a further rigid mounting for the bracket arms 21, the manually rotated shaft 24 that is journaled in the end walls 17 and 18 also extends to the lower ends of the bracket arms 21 illustrated in several of the Figures. A second shaft 25 is journaled in the end walls 17 and 18 of the U- shaped frame in horizontal alignment with the shaft 24 and rotation of the shaft 24 by the crank handle 26 fixed to the end of the shaft outwardly ofthe end wall 3 of the casing frame, is communicated to the shaft 25 by meshing gears 27 respectively secured to the shafts 24 and 25 between the end wall 18 and adjacent the end wall 3 of the casing frame. The lower ends of the bracket arms 22 are pivotally mounted as at 28 upon the end walls 17 and 18 and devices are provided for holding the bracket arms 21 and 22 in operative position.
A chalk sharpening element in the form of a spirally bladed roll 29 is journaled in the upper ends of each of the sets of bracket arms 21 and 22 and a roll cleaning brush 30 is journaled as at 31 in each of the bracket arms 21 and 22 for contact with the services the sharpening roll for cleaning the spiral grooves of the blade of chalk shavings. rlhe sliaft carrying sharpening rolls and brushes 30 together with the shafts 24 and 25 project outwardly of bracket arms 21 and respectively carry sprocket wheels 32, 33, and 34, the sprocket wheels 32 and 34 being traversed by sprocket chains 35 while the sprocket wheel 33 is engaged with the outer run of an associated sprocket chain as shown in Figure 6. lt will therefore be seen that when the shaft 24 is'rotated by the crank handle 26, rotary motion is transmitted to the shaft 25 by the meshing gear 27 and said sprocket chains 33 passing over the sprocket wheels 34 fixed to the shafts 24 and 25 effect rotation of the sharpening rolls 29 and the rotary brushes 30.
To vary the thickness of the sharpened edge of the chalk, the bracket arm 22 is moved upon its pivot 28 to elfect movement of the sharpening roll 29 carried thereby toward and away from the sharpening roll carried by the backet 21 and to accomplish such pivotal movement, there is provided a pair of operating rods 36 shown in detail in Figure 14, the operating rod carrying a knurled head 37 with the opposite end ehereof threaded as at 38, an abutment collar 39 being carried by the operating rod 36 at the inner end of the threaded portion 38. The operating rod 36 freely extends through an opening in a side wall 2 of the casing frame and said abutment collar 39 is engaged with the inner edge of the bracket arm 21 as shown in Figures 6 to 8, while the threaded end 38 thereof threads through a block 41 carried by the bracket arm 22 and retained in position thereon by the nut 42. A coil spring l43 surrounds the operating rod 36 between the block 41 and collar 39 for resiliently holding the bracket arm 22 in adj usted position, this change of position being illustrated in Figures 7 and 8.
A pair of chalk guides 44 and 45 transd versely shiftable relative to the casing frame above the sharpening rolls 29, the guide 44 including depending side flanges 46 and 47 while the guide 45 carries a depending side flange 48opposing the side flange 47. The
ends of the chalk guide 45 are slidably mounted upon struck-out lips 49 in the upper ends of the end wall 3 and said guides 44 and 45 are also relatively adjustable to accommodate chalk blocks of different thicknesses. An operating rod as sho-wn in Figure 13 and designated by the reference numeral 50 has a knurled operating head 51 upon one end thereof while the other end is threaded as at 52, the inner end of the threadedportion being annularly grooved as at 53 to provide a swivel connection with the depending flange 47 upon the chalk guide 44.` The threaded end 52 of the operating rod 50 threads through an opening in the flange 48 upon the chalk guide45 so that upon operation of the rods 50, the knurled heads 51 of which extend outwardly of the casing frame, the chalk guide 45 may be moved toward and away from the chalk guide 44. To cause a unitary sliding movement of` both chalk guides 44 and 45, the operating rod 54 shown in Figure 15 is employed, said rod having a knurled operating head 55 upon Vone end and having the other end thereof threaded as at 56 with an annularly grooved portion 57 at the inner end of the threaded end that swivels in an opening provided in the side wall 3 of the casing frame while the threaded end 56 threads through an opening provided in the depending flange 46 upon the chalk guide 44. It will therefore be observed, that upon rota-- tion of the operating rod 54 as shown in' Figure 4, chalk guides 44 and 45 are unitarily shifted. This latter adjustment of the chalk guides is provided so that the block of chalk may be disposed above one of the sharpening rolls as illustrated in Figure l() to have all rough edges thereof removed and to present a straight line, the guides being then shifted to the positions shown in Figure 9 so that the edgeof the chalk may be lowered to a position between the sharpening rolls. of thechalk block between the sharpening rolls, each bracket arm 21 carries a laterally directed arm 57 directed toward the bracket arms 22 for reception of the bar 58 constituting a chalk rest between the shapening rolls 29, opposite ends of the rest 58 being notched as at 59 to be received on the arms 57 as shown in several of the figures.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof, Vit is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
