Description
, Jan. 19, 1932. c. D. KARR PAD HOLDER Filed May 51, 1929 Patented Jan. 19, 1932 C ARLES 1). mum, or HOLLAND, MICHIGAN PAD HOLDER Application filed May 31,
This invention relates .to bed mattresses and more particularly to means for holding a plurality of pads or mattress members in assembled relation.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of new and improved means for connecting a plurality of pads or a pad and mattress together in such a manner as to hold them in alinement or in assembled relation during use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a new and improved means for holding a plurality of pads, mattresses, or pads and mattresses as a single unitthat is simple in construction, easily. assembled, cheap to apply to pad or mattress, and that is eflicient and reliable in use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the 'following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is, a perspective view of the mattress and pad assembly;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pad, with parts broken away;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one cornerof the pad with parts broken'away;
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of a hospital bed showing the invention in position thereon.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates a hospital bed shown diagrammatically in Fig. 4. The bed is provided with the usual mattress support ing members 6 and 7 pivoted to the bed rail 8, and the member 9 pivoted to the member 7. The members .6, 7 and 9 are adapted to be adjusted to an alined position or to a plurality of adjusted positions, as is usual in such constructions.
A mattress assembly 10 comprising a mattress 11 and a pad or mattress pad member 12 are supported on the supporting members 6, 7 and 9 as is usual'in such constructions. The. mattress 11 may be of any suitable construction, but preferably it is com posed of a spring assembly.
Since the specific construction of the ad, the mattress or spring assembly and the mattress supporting members constitute no part 1929. Serial No. 367,193.
of the present invention it is not thought necessary to further illustrate or describe the same.
Hospital beds or beds for invalids are usually constructed in such a manner that the entire pad and spring assembly may be made to take various desired forms for the accom- 'modation of the patient. The head end portion 6 of the mattress supporting member, for instance, may be elevated for supporting the (patient'in a reclining position or, if desire the head end portion 6 may be elevated to support the patient in a reclining position and the central portion of the bed be elevated as indicated more or less diagrammatically in F ig. 4, for accommodating and supporting the legs or knees of the patient in a more or less bent position as desired.
In adjusting the bed or mattress assembly 10 the-pad 12 is likely to become more or less displaced on the spring assembly 11. This is, of course, readilyvcorrected if there is'no patient on the bed, but with a patient on the bed it becomes not only a difficult matter to properly position the pad, but it irritates and disturbs. the patient.
In order to avoid this difiiculty, suitable means are provided for so connecting the pad and mattress or spring assembly together as to avoid displacement of the pad while adjusting the supporting members 6, 7 and 9.
In the form of construction selected to illustrateone embodiment of the invention, one
of the bed members, preferably the pad 12, 35
is provided with loops or straps which are adapted to extend about the corners of the other member, as the mattress or spring assembly 11, for securing the two together as asingle unit.
As shown, the pad 12 is provided with a strap 13 .across each corner thereof; The strap 13 may be of fabric either single or folded and of any desired width and loose enough to form a loop portion for extending e5 about the-adjacent corners of the mattress or spring assembly 1-1 as shown in Fig. 1. Each loop has its ends secured to the side and end of the pad respectively, and its central portion is loose enough or slack enough 10a loops for engagmg to form a loop for extending across the corner of the mattress or spring assembly.
points of attachment of the loops to the side edges'of said pad member atone end thereof Preferabl the loops at each end of the pad being spaced from those at the opposite end are formed rom a single or continuous strap, by having the ends secured to the side edges 15 of the pad and the central portion secured to the edges 16' of the end of the pad adjacent the center line of the pad.
The pad 12 is preferably though not necessarily made with a'median seam extending about the sides and ends of the pad, as shown at 17 and 18 in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. By attaching the straps 13 to the pad at its thereof.
- In testimony whe medianplane the straps may be turned from one side of the pad to the other as occasion requires, thereby permitting the pad to be reversed.
When the assembly is applied to a hospital bed, the upper corners of the frame supporting members 6 may be inserted beneath the loops 13'as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. By means of this arrangement the spring mattress 11 and pad 12 are connected to the supporting frame members 6, 7 and 9 so as to move therewith as a unit without becoming disarranged.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a bed assembly, a substantially rectangular mattress pad member, and means for attaching the same to a mattress, s id means nally across each corner of said pad member,
said strap members being secured to the ends and side edges of said pad member, and loose or full enough between the ends to constitute the corners of a mattress and forming a snug fit therewith, each of said loops extending diagonally across the corresponding corner of said ad member and constituting the sole means or attaching said pad member to said mattress, the loops at one end of the pad member being spaced from those at the other end. y
2. In a device of the class described, a sub stant-ially rectangular pad having a seam on its median plane extending about the ends and side edges of said pad anda strap member extending across each corner of said pad to form loops, the ends of said loops being attached to said median seam at the sides and ends of said pad, the loops at one end of the pad being spaced from attached to said pad at points those at the other end of the padwhereby said pad may be reversibly con nected to the mattress solely by said loops.
3. In combination, a mattress member, a
'pad member thereon, said mattress having corners, loop members connected to said pad member for'engaging said corners for constitutin g the sole means for connecting said pad member to said mattress member, each .of said loop members, when in operative position, extending in a plane diagonally across the corresponding corner of said mattress and across the'side and end edges thereof, the
