Description

Jan. 5, 1932. o. B. KERR 1,840,202
CLEANING DEVICE FOR BROODERS Filed Nov. 1, 1950 Ora/ 65 f 617mm ATTOR NEY Patented Jan. 5, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ORANGE BAX'IER KERR, F LAUDERDALE, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR TO MARY C. KERR, OF
I LAUDERDALE, MISSISSIPPI CLEANING DEVICE FOR BROODERS Application filed November This invention relates to brooders and has for an object the provision of means for automatically and conveniently disposing of I the droppings so that the brooder may be kept in a clean and sanitary condition, and
the chicks prevented from reaching the droppings.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means of the above character which 0 may be adapted for brooders of the battery type and in which the separate brooder compartments may be separately cleaned, either manually or automatically.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing The figure is an elevation with parts broken away and shown in section and illustrating the invention in connection with a battery brooder. I 2 Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the brooder as shown may be of any suitable construction and may include a frame 10 and vertical walls 11. These 39 walls are shown as formed of wire fabric,
but they may be of any suitable type.
The invention is shown in connection with a brooder of the battery type and includes a plurality of separate compartments 12.
These compartments are arranged one above the other and some of the compartments, or
all of the compartments may be provided with hovers 18.
The compartments are provided with 49 foraminous floors 14, and in Figure 1 of the drawing, a tank 15 is positioned beneath each of the floors. These tanks are adapted to contain water and if desired, this water may contain a suitable insecticide.
The tanks 15 are designed to be supplied with water through a suitable supply pipe 16 and this pipe is provided with discharge nozzles 17, one of which enters each of the tanks15. A valve 18 which is controlled by a float 19 controls the flow of water from the 1, 1930. Serial No. 492,819.
pipe 16 to the tanks, the level of water being also controlled by these valves. Droppings will pass through the floor into the water of the tanks and will be carried off by a disposal means now to be described.
Communicating with each of the tanks 15 at the bottoms of the latter is an outlet pipe 20. These pipes are provided with valves 21 which are controlled by floats 22. The outer ends of the pipes 20 are in communi cation with a common discharge pipe 23 and this pipe may be in communication with a sewer or septic tank.
As previously stated, the level of water within the tanks 15 is controlled by the float 19. WVhen this level is reached, the floats 22 will automatically open the valves 21 so that the water within the tanks will flow outward through the pipes 20 and 23. As the water level lowers the valve 18 will be opened so that a fresh supply of water will enter the tank and the flushing operation will be repeated. The brooder will thus be kept in a clean and sanitary condition.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a brooder, a foraminous floor, a liquid containing tank beneath the floor, means to supply liquid to the tank, and means to flush the tank.
2. In a brooder, a foraminous floor, a liquid containing tank beneath the floor to receive droppings, means to supply liquid to the tank, and means to drain the tank.
3. In a brooder, a plurality of separate compartments, a foraminous floor for each compartment, a liquid containing tank beneath the floor of each compartment, a drain manifold communicating with the tanks, means to automatically drain the tanks, and means to supply fresh liquid to the tanks.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
