The present invention relates to the type of tools for truing and enlarging openings and generally designated as a reamer.
The invention provides a reamer including a body, cutters seated in channels formed in the sides of the body, means for moving the cutters longitudinally of the body to effect a simultaneous lateral movement thereof to vary the diameter of the tool, and means for securing the cutters in the required adjusted position.
While the drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the body or stock of the reamer which may be of any determinate length. Apilot 2 is formed at one end of the body 1 by reducing the stock. A shank 3 is formed at the opposite end of the body,

ating member, such as a brace, wrench or bar. The end portion of the body -1 adjacent the pilot 2 is reduced to form an annular shoulder 4 which constitutes a shoulder for limiting themovement of a sleeve 5 in one direction. A screw 7 is threaded into the reduced portion of the body 1 a distance from the shoulder 4 corresponding to the length of the sleeve 5 to retain the latter in place. The head of the screw 7 has an eccentric arrangement to admit of securing the sleeve 5 by a binding action upon turning the screw The sleeve 5 is milled hand to obtain a firm grip thereon when rotating the sleeve to effect adjustment of the cutters. The inner wall of the sleeve 5 tapers and is threaded, as indicated at 8, to engage threaded portions 9 of the cutters 10. I,
indicated most clearly in Figures 4 and 6 of the drawings. 5 The cutters 10 taper throughout their length, the inclination correspond- I ing to the inclination of the inner wall orbottom of the channels 11, with the result that the outer. faces and cutting edges are par allel, as indicated most clearly in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. Each of vthe cutters 10 is cut away upon itsouter side adjacent its upper end, as indicated at 12, to provide clearance. The end portion beyond the recess 1.2 is reduced and provided with threaded sections 9 to match the inner threaded wall 8 of the sleeve 5. The tool may be provided with any number of channels and cutters, two being shown in Figure 4 and six in Figure 6. The l cutters 10 are of tool'steel properly tempered. A screw 13 threaded into a side of the body 1 is adapted to have its head engage a side of a cutter and secure the same in the required adjusted position. In the arrangement indicated in Figure 4, a screw 13 is provided for each of the cutters 10. In the arrangement shown in Figure 6 a screw 13 cooperates with two cutters to effect a binding thereof in the channels in which they are seated.
When the parts are assembled, and the sleeve 5 and cutters 10 are free, rotation of the sleeve 5 effects longitudinal movement of the cutters in their respective channels or seats and by reason of the inner faces of the cutters andthe bottoms of the channels being inclined, said cutters are moved outwardly or lnwardly according to the dlrection 111 'which the cutters are'moved longitudinally of the body.
After the cuttershave been adjusted to the required position they are made secure by tightening the screws 13 and by turning the screw 7 which effects a binding of the sleeve 5 to prevent casual rotation thereof.
Having thus describedthe invention, I claim:
1. A tool of the character specified comprising a body havinga shoulder, sleeve rotatable on the body-and limited in one direction by said-shoulder, a screw threaded into a side of the body and having an eccentric "portion in engagement with the sleeve to limit its movement in the opposite direction and to a hold the sleeve in'adjusted position by a bindingaction when the said screw is turned, and
cutters slidably mounted upon the body and havin screw-thread engagement with the said'sl eeve to be moved thereby.
2. A tool of the character specified comprisingabody having a pilot at one end and a shank at the opposite end, and having the end portion adjacent the pilot reduced to 'forin-an outer shoulder, and having longitudinal channels in the reduced portion, the
inner walls of the channels being inclined and theside walls outwardly converged, cutters snugly fitting within the channels and having thread sections'at their inner ends, a
sleeve rotatably mounted upon thereduced portion ofthe body-andhaving its inner wall tapered and threaded to match the thread sections'ofthecutters, the inner end of the sleeve engagingthe outer shoulder of the body, an element mounted upon a side ofthe body and having an eccentric portion engaging the opposite end of the sleeve and adapted when turned to bindingly engage'the sleeve to prevent movement thereof, and screws threaded into the body andadapted to-engage the cutters to'hold' them in adjusted position.
