The invention relates to jar lifters, and has for its object to provide a device of this character wherein pivoted jaws are used for engaging opposite sides of a jar, and which jaws have their arms in parallel relation and pivoted to a body member and to provide an inverted U-shaped member having its arms slidably mounted in the body member and terminating in transverse members having eyes slidably mounted on the .arms of the jaws, and forming means whereby when the slidable member is moved in one direction, the jaws will be forced apart and when moved in the opposite direction, the jaws will be forced into close engagement with a jar. Also to form the transverse members and their eyes from the same piece of rod material that form the slidable U-shaped member.
A further object is to form the pivoted jaws from arms pivoted to arms of the body member and extending downwardly and terminating in bends forming eyes and in upwardly diverging jaw gripping members formed from the same piece of wire.
A further object is to connect the eyes of the jaws by transverse wires relatively small and which wires are at the lower sides of the eyes, whereby when the jaws are forced toget-her, the wires will pass under the jar for supporting the same.
A further object is to upwardly converge the opposite arms of the inverted U-shaped members carried by the jaws at angles where- '35 by when the jaws are forced together said arms will engage the periphery of the jar at spaced points for preventing tilting thereof.
A further object is to pivotally connect the arms of the jaws to inwardly extending ears 0 carried by the body member and to slidably mount the arms of the U-shaped inverted slidable member in the body member and in said ears for accurately guiding the arms thereof.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view talren on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the inverted U-shaped body member which is formed from strip iron or other material, and 2 a handle member carried thereby. The arms 3' of the handle member 55 extend through the transverse portion 4: thereof and are twisted around the portion 4, thereby forming loops 5, which rigidly. attach the handle to the body member. The lower ends of the arms 6 of the body memher 1 terminate in inwardly extending ears 7, which extend towards each other and have pivotally connected thereto by means of eyes 8 the downwardly extending arms 9 of the gripping jaws 10. The gripping jaws 10 are substantially U-shaped as clearly shown in Figure land are formed from U-shaped members inverted and inclining upwardly and outwardly whereby their upwardlyconverging arms 11 are positioned for engaging the periphery of the jar 12 at spaced I points as clearly shown in Figure 1 for preventing tilting of the ar and for conforming to of varying diameters. The jaws 10 are formed from the same piece of material as the arms 9 and are connected to the arms by the eyes 13, which are formed by bending the material. The eyes 13 of each jaw are connected together by transverse wires 14 which are positioned adjacent the lower sides of the eyes, whereby when the jaws are forced together, said wires will pass under the lower curved edge 15 of the'jar as clearly shown in Figure 2, for supporting the jar. In operation the jaws 10 are first forced apartfor allowing the jar 12 to be received therebetween and after the jar is between the jaws, the jaws are forced together to the position shown in Figure 2.
Slidably mounted at 16 in the transverse 10 portion 4 of the body member, and at 1'? in the ears 7 are the vertical arms 18 of an inverted slidable member 19, which is U-shaped, and during the operation of the device, the operator grasps the handle member 2 for holding the device as a whole, and U-shaped member 19, and first forces the member 19 up wardly for spreading the arms, and after the spreading operation pushes downwardly on the member 19 for forcing the jaws 10 together and into gripping engagement with opposite sides of the ar. The lower ends of the arms 18 terminate in horizontal arms which terminate in eyes 21, slidably mounted on the arms 9 of one of the jaws, and then is bent to form horizontal arms 22, the ends 0? which terminate in eyes 28, slidably mounted on the arms 9 of the other jaw, therefore it will be seen that "he U-shaped member 19 as well as the eyes and arms carried by the lower ends of the arms 18 thereof are formed from the same piece of material, bent to form, consequently reducing the cost of construction,
From the above it will be seen that a ailifter is provided wherein the jaws and their pivoted arms are formed from a single piece of wire bent to form and the slidable member, its arms and transverse portions and eyes are formed from a single piece of wire, it reby reducing the cost of construction to a minimum, and allowing the device to be for nod from standard wire bent and twisted to form. It Will also be seen that by extending the jaws upwardly and outwardly with converging opposite sides, said opposite sides will grip and engage at spaced points the opposite sides of a jar, thereby preventing tilting of the jar and positively holding the jar.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A. jar lifter comprising an inverted U- shaped body member having its arms downwardly disposed, inwardly extending flanges carried by the ends of said arms, a handle member carried by the transverse portion of the body member, jaw arms pivoted to the flanges, the adjacent jaw arms being in diverging relation, an inverted Ushaped slidable member, the arms of the U-shaped slidable member extending through apertures in the transverse portion of the body member and the flanges, said arms tern'iinat-ing in parallel transverse arms, the adjacent ends of said arms being bent to form eyes surrounding the arms of one of the jaws, one of said transverse arms terminating in eyes sur rounding the arms of the other jaw and jar supporting means connecting the arms of the jaw arms.
2. The combination with diverging pivoted jaw arms of a jar lifter, of means for forcing said arms towards and away from each other,
- said means comprising an inverted slidably mounted member, the arms of the slidably mounted members being disposed between the jar arms, the arms of said slidable member terminating in transverse members, said transverse members comprising spaced arms, the adjacent ends of said arms being provided with eyes slidably mounted on the jaw arms, the end of one of said arms terminating in an eye slidably mounted on the other jaw arms and jar supporting members connecting the arms of the jaws.
3. A jar lift-er comprising a U-shaped memher having its arms downwardly disposed, inwardly extending flanges carried by the lower ends of the body member arms, jaws movable towards and away from each other, said avvs comprising arms pivoted to the flanges and extending downwardly, said arms terminating in eyes, said eyes terminating in inverted upwardly and outwardly extending jar engaging members, said engaging members being restricted in width at their upper ends and jar supporting members connecting the arms of the pivoted aws.
4. The combination with pivoted jar engaging members comprising downwardly extending arms terminating in upwardly and outwardly incline U-shaped ar engaging loops, of eyes connecting the loops and the arms and transverse members connecting the lower sides of the eyes and adapted to pass under a jar.
