ANDREW A. KRAMER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TROUGH.
Application filed October 14, 1927. Serial No. 226,140,
My invention relates to troughs and particularly to metal structures of this character adapted for shipping in knocked-down condition, the principal object of the invention being to provide for easy and convenient assembly and secure connecting of parts to produce a substantial, water-tight and relatively enduring trough.
In accomplishing this and other objects 1 have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a trough constructed and assembled according to the preferred form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of a body of the trough partly broken away to show assembly of a coupling strip therewith, and other parts shown disassembled from the body but in related order.
Fig. 3 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section of the trough illustrating corresponding elements at opposite ends of the trough 1n different stages of assembly.
Fig. 1 is a detail perspective View, partly broken away for better illustration, of a modified form of my invention.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of end members of the modified form.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a body member of a trough preferably constructed of sheet metal and bent to semi-cylindrical form, the longitudinal and end edges of the body turned laterally and outwardly to provide top flanges 2 and 3 and the end abutment rings 4 and 5. 6 designates end plates or heads adapted for cooperation with the body member to form a liquid-tight container when assembled therewith and for supporting the body member from the ground or other base.
Each head 6 has a lower flange 7 forming a foot for extended contact with the ground for stabilizing support of the body, and an ripper flange 8 overlapping the body flanges and 3 and which may be welded to said flanges to enhance rigidity of the structure.
In order to retain the head in sealing relation with the body I provide a. semi-circular coupling strip 9 adapted to seat within the end flange and having spaced tongues 10 projecting outwardly therefrom and through a semi-circular series of slots 11 in the head, the tongues being of suflicient length to project beyond the outer face of the head and by turning back thereon to be clenched in engagement with the head.
To further anchor the head to the body member, I provide the head with struck-out lips 12 adapted to lie against the inner surface of the body member as illustrated in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 of the drawings.
In order to prevent distortion of the trough when in use and particularly when the trough may be of substantial length, I provide a cross brace 13, preferably consisting of a strap of sheet metal having upset end portions 14: adapted toseat in depressions 15 in the body flanges 2 and 3, and down- .turned terminals 16 forming hooks for application over the edges of the flanges to retain the body member against lateral distortion or bulging, the ends of the hooks being bent back under the flanges to clamp the brace to the body member. The brace may be provided with a stiflening corrugation 17 to add to its strength. I
The end plates or heads may be made of difl'erent and cheaper material than the body member of a trough and are preferably paint-- ed before assembly, either at the factory or at setting-up location, the paint serving as a' sealing element for closing the joint to assure thatthe trough may be water-tight; although additional sealing means need not be provided for in view of the close and secure engagement of the heads with the body member.
As a modified form of head element I may provide a saddle 18 having a supporting foot 19 and a semi-circular seat 20 to receive the end of the body member, the saddle having a semi-circular series of slots 21 to receive tongues 22 on an endplate or head member 23 provided with an inturned flange at on its upper edge adapted for overlapping the body flanges 2 and j 3, the tongues being clenched over the rear face of the saddle to clamp the saddle to the end flange of the body member.
Parts constructed as described for the preing spaced slots in the transverse end memferred form of trough may be stored or hers.
shipped disassembled in knocked-down condition with a number of troughs in nested relation and in connection with a corresponding number of head elements. When the parts are to be assembled into a complete trough for use, the coupling members are fitted to the ends of the body member and the end plates or heads are assembled in tongue and groove relation with the coupling members to clamp the end flanges 0n the body member. The cross member, when in position, will hold the trough against distortion under weight of its contents or from other force incident to its use.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A trough including a body member having transverse end flanges, head plates for closing the ends of said body, engaging said flanges and supporting the body, and coupling strips back-lapping the body flanges and having means engaging the head plates to retain the plates on the body.
2. A trough including a body member having transverse end flanges, head plates for closing the ends ofsaid body, engaging said flanges and supporting the body, and coupling strips back-lapping the body flanges and having prongs bent over the head plates to retain the plates on the body.
3. In combination with a trough body having open ends and outturned end flanges, slotted head plates engaging said end flanges, and coupling strips back-lapping the end flanges having outstruck tongues extended through the head plate slots and clenched to said plates.
4. In combination with a trough body having open ends and outturned end flanges, slotted head plates engaging said end flanges and having foot flanges, and coupling strips backlapping the end flanges having outstruck tongues extended through the head plate slots and clenched to said plates, to retain the end plates in end closure and supporting relation wit-h the trough.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body having top flanges and end flanges, end elements provided with top flanges engageable with the top body flanges and lower flanges to support the body, said end elements comprising a head and an attaching strip, one provided with slots and the other with tongues, for securing the head to the body.
6. In, a trough, a substantiallysemi-cylindrical body member, the edges thereof terminating in longitudinal flanges, and having outwardlyv directed end flanges, transverse end members, semi-annular locking members engaging the inner faces of said end flanges and having forwardly directed, spaced lugs for clenching engagement with correspond- In testimony whereof I aiflx my signature.
