PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN RO'IHMAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
- WEARING APPAREL.
Application filed January 8, 1929.
This invention relates to wearing apparel and has particular reference to multiple pocket constructions for such apparel.
An important object of the invention is to provide an improved multiple pocket con struction, wherein such objects as pens, pencils and the like may be conveniently and safely carried along with other articles, but separated therefrom in such a way as to afford a high degree of protection thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide a duplex pocket especially adapted to be provided in trousers which is so located in conjunction with a side pocket as to permit freedom of movement of the wearer, and at the same time protect such instruments as a fountain pen or pencil from injury.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction wherein the several parts entering into the same are so patterned or shaped as to permit economical assembling and the economical incorporation thereinto of suitable reinforcing means, such as bindings, facings, double lapping of edges, etc. for the purpose of strengthening the construction at the points of greatest strain and wear.
To the above ends the invention consists in certain improvements and novel features of construction, all of which will become ap parent from the followingdescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts and wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of a pair of trousers, in connection with which the construction embodying this invention is illustrated; Figure? is an inner face view of a section of a trousers leg, showing the material entering into the main pocket forming section folded over upon itself and there stitched in place; Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 2, but showing the main pocket-forming section extended and having an auxiliary pocket-forming section of similar material stitched thereto and forming a pocket which is auxiliary to the main pocket; Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on a line t t of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Figure 3; Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on a horizontal line 6 6 of Figure 2'; Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line 7 -7 of Figure l; and Figure 8 is a Serial No. 331,086.
sectional view taken on line 8 8 of Figure 1.
Although the construction embodying this invention may be employed in connection with various articles of wearing apparel, it is herein illustrated and described in the connection with trousers embodying the front section of the waist and leg portion indicated by 5.
In constructing the pocket illustrating one embodiment of this invention the leg section 5 is slotted in order to provide an entrance 6 for the auxiliary pocket hereinafter described. The material adjacent this entrance 6 is re-enforced by two strips 7 and 8 of suitable binding, such as leather, these strips being stitched to the margin of the material adjacent the entrance as shown.
Between the inturned margin of the reinforcing strip 7 and the adjacent face of the trousers leg section 5, is confined a portion of the margin of the main pocket forming section 9 which is slotted so as not to obstruct the entrance 6 for the auxiliary pocket.
In order to reinforce the entrance 6 of the auxiliary pocket, a reinforcing strip 13 of suitable material is provided. This strip of reinforcing material is stitched along one edge to an auxiliary pocket-forming section 14, and its opposite edge or margin is confined intermediate the inturned portion of the reinforcing strip 8 and the adjacent margin of the main pocket-formin section 9, it being there suitably stitched in place. The auxiliary pocket-forming section 14 is secured at one of its margins to the main pocket-forming section by stitching, as shown at 15, and over another of its margins a binding portion 16 of the leg section 5 is folded, the binding portion being stitched down in place and concealing the upper margin of the auxiliary pocket-forming section as well as the upper margin of the main pocket forming section 9.
To a portion of the inner face of the main pocket-forming section 9 is secured a re-en- .forced facing 17, which, when the main pocket-forming section is folded over upon itself as shown in F1gure2, serves to reinforce the entrance to the mam pocket and give to the trousers section 5 the proper contour or pattern. After folding the main pocket-forming section 9 over upon itself,
adjacent margins of the same are stitched to each other as shown at 18, thus forming a main pocket. It will be understood that entrance to the main pocket is to be had between adjacent unstitched portions of the main pocket-forming section 9, and that access may be had to the auxiliary pocket through the entrance 6 which, as above explained, is unobstructed by the main pocketforming section 9. v
Although the auxiliary pocket is adapted for the reception of various articles, it serves conveniently for the carrying of such articles as pens, pencils and the like, a pen 19 of the fountain type being herein shown. It will be understood that by reason of the particular location of the auxiliary pocket, its contents are readily accessible and are so located as to permit unobstructed hip movement of the leg of the user.
It will be observed that the location of the auxiliary pocket is such that a pen or pencil inserted therein will extend diagonally across the leg of the wearer so that it will lie in a position on the thigh close to the adjacent portion of the abdominal wall of the torso when the wearer raises his leg or is seated. This not only adds to the wearers comfort but also affords a greater means of protection to the articles carried in said pocket.
In carrying out the invention I have provided a construction in which the front section of a trousers leg and the front portion or wall of the inclosed pocket may be secured at their edges at the mouth of the pocket and the auxiliary pocket provided by slitting the trousers section adjacent this point of attachment and forming the auxiliary pocket by means of a separate piece secured to one side of the slit and at its edge to the contiguous wall of the pocket. In practice I have found it advantageous to slit both the trousers section and the front wall of the pocket and secure the latter to the lower edge of the slit as this enables me to unite the auxiliary pocket piece to the upper side of the slit-and secure it within the front wall of the main pocket. This arrangement it will be seen places the auxiliary pocket wholly within the main pocket and should the former through wear or otherwise have an opening formed therein the contents will be caught by the main pocket.
A duplex pocket of the character described is especially serviceable for trousers intended for sport wear or for business wear during the summer season or in warm climates when coats and vests are'discarded. I have also found trousers thus equipped to fill the need of students and of workmen and professional men such as surveyors and en gineers whose duties require them to per.- form much of their work out of doors.
lVhile I have shown only one form of the invention, it will be understood that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the following claims.
