CLQSURE ron 'UNITING nnenn BODIES.
Application filed August s,
My invention relates to articles intended to function as coverings and which are requlred to fit more or less closely and to be drawn into place and which, because of the relative 5 dimensions of the element to be covered, re-
quire an entrance opening large enough to accommodate'said element and permit the article to be easily broughtto its intended position. Examples of the article are found more particularly in articles of footwear commonly referred to as leggings, in blouses, in covers for inanimate elements, and the like. In its application. to articles of ap-- parel, the invention is concerned .more particularly with'the means employed to secure a facile mode of application of the article to the person ofthe wearer. v The object'of the invention is to provide 'an article of the type which is so designed as to fit more or less closely and therefore calls for an entrance opening large enough to admit of its application over the portion of the human body or the inanimate element desired to be covered, with aclo'sure means ment of at least oneend of the article sufliciently to permit its adjustment into the Gov ering position. The invention obviously is applicable to any device which should afford a larger opening when the article is open and being applied than when it is closed and in position.
A more particular object of myinvention is to make possible the easy application to, or removal from, the body of articles of apparel equipped with side fastenings of the interlocking type. Such interlocking fasten ers have as then main elements, a slider and two serrated strips each attached to its own strip offabric,'these latter being necessarily united at one end to prevent the slider from becoming disconnected from the metallic hooks forming the serrated edges. The invention consists inthe particular arrangement and construction in which at least one of the said strips of fabric upon which the serrated columns of interlocking fastenings aremounted is disconnected throughout. a
portion of its length from the edge ofthe article, thus permitting-a larger opening at said disconnected end This arrangement necessitates a means of fastening the two' upper edges together after, the article has been applied and is in its proper position I upon the person. This fastening means will which will permit the temporary enlarge enough to admit the 1927. Serial No. 211,038.
be more particularly described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings which show several examples of the invention without definlng its limits, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a legging embodying the present inven-- tion and shown in the closed or adjusted posi. tlon as it appears when ap lied to the leg. Fig. 2 is a side elevation o the legging in the open position or that just prior to and ready for application to the leg of the wearer. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate the inven-' tion as applied to a blouse showing the closure means in theclosed and the open positions respectively.
Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate my invention as applied to a legging 1 having the usual meeting'edges 2-t-he closure of which is effected by a slide fastening device 3, consisting of the'usual serrated edges 4 and slider 5 of any of the known types now on the market, and the strap 6 of the usual type and design. The legglng is provided with a flat strap 7 having a snap fastener member 8 arranged to engage the cooperating member 9 applied in the usual manner to the body-of thelegging for securing the grip member 10 of the slider 5 when the latter has performed its function ih effecting the engagement of the serrated edges. One of these edges is mounted upon a stri of fabric 11 sewn to one of the meet- 1ng e ges of the legging throughout its length, While the other edge is mounted on from the corresponding edge of the leggin for a suitable distance fromthe upper en thereof so that when the interlocking slide fastener is in open position the disconnected section of the strip 11 permits the top portion of the legging to be easily spread apart to a position presenting an opening large foot. The invention obviously maybe applied to the bottom of the legging as well as to the top thereof, or only at the bottom of said legging. When the legging is in use the strap 7, slide, and fasteners are in the position shown in Fig. 1,
fastening straps 12 engaging with correspending buckles 13, completing the closure of the legging about-the leg and presenting a pleasing appearance as well as providing a snug fit. p
' The application of the invention to a blouse is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 in which the'blouse 14: having meeting longitudinal edges 15 is equipped with the usual slide fastening device comprising serrated edges 16 and slide 17 mounted, as in the case of the legging, upon strips of fabric 18. This pose similar'to thatof the straps 1-1 in Fig. 1.
I claim:
. 1. In combinationa body having' meeting longitudinal edges, strips of a flexible material attached to said edges and provided with cooperating'rcolumns of interlocking fastenings, at least one of such strips being permanently attached to one longitudinal edge for only a portion of its length and being permanently detached from such edge portion for the vremainder ofits length at one of itsv ends, a slider for-causing interlocking of said columns of fastenings, and means adapted to draw said detached portion and its adjacent body portion toward each other. i
2. In combination a body having meeting longitudinal edges, strips of flexible material attached to said edges and provided with a plurality of cooperating fastening elements, said strips being permanently united to each other at one of their ends, at least one of said strips being detached from one longitudinal edge of the body for only a portion of its length at its permanently united end, means for effecting engagement and disengagement of the cooperating fastening elements, and means for drawing together said detached strip portion and said longitudinal edge.
3. In combination an open flexible. body having meeting longitudinal edges, strips of flexible material attached to said edges, said strips being permanently united to each other at one of their ends, cooperating columns of interlocking fastenersv attached to said strips, a sliderfor causing engagement and disengagement of said fasteners, the
strips thus being separable at all other points throughout their length, at least one of said strips being detached from said body for a portion of its length at its permanentlyunited end to permit enlargement of the body opening, and means for drawing the detached strip portionand its adjacent body I portion toward each other to reduce the body opening.
