SCREW JACK.
Application filed June 18,
This invention relates to improvements in screw jacks, especially adaptable for straightening structures that have been damaged or sprung out of their normal form, such as automobile chassis frames.
The object obthe invention is to provide an equipment y means of whlch chassis frames that have become disarranged may be forced back into proper form without d1smembering the frame structure. I Another object is to so construct the equ1pment that it may be applied readily to the chassis. frameand force applied 1n opposite directions to points more 'or less remote fromV each other. And another object is to provide a screw jack equipment with' interchangeable extension mem ers by which the length of the jack may be greatly varied as occasion for its use may require.
These objects are laccomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which VFig. 1 is a side view of a screw jaclr embodying the invention, including a pair of `removable extension members, portions be' ing broken away;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view of the screw jack including a different pair of eX- tension members Fig. '3 is a similar view showing the screw `jack including one of the extension members shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view `of the screw jack without the use of an extension mem- ,balm
Fzig. y5 is a rear end view of one of the end tips used in the appliance;
Fig. 6 is an elevation projected from Fig. 5; and v Fig. 7 is a plan view of the screw Jack 4applied to a frame as it appears in use, the frame being fragmentary.
The characters appearing in the ,description refer to parts shown in theV drawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
The invention consists of an operating member having ahead 1 from each end of whichextends a threaded stud 2 `and 3 respectively, the spiral of the threads on the stud 2 being opposed, as to direction, to those on the stud 3. The head has made therein a `series of sockets 4 for the, recep tion of a handle 5 by which theloperating member is turned.
1928. Serial No. 286,331.
Uponeach of said studs is a corresponding sleeve 6 that has threaded relation therewith, each sleeve having an external flange 7 at its inner end.
An extension member 8 consisting of a tube is lremovably ipositioned on each sleeve, which sleeve telescopes t e corresponding tube, the-flange .7 of the sleeve forming a' shoulder that -bears against the Acorresponding end of the tube when the latter is in place.- In the-outer end of each tube 8 is removably positioned a tip 9 having a head 10, the outer end of which is preferably wedge shaped, and with a trans verse notch 10 therein, and its inner end being provided with a stud 11 having a series of annular shoulders 12-12 one of which beings against the corresponding end of the tu For instances where a jack of greater ,length is required a pair of tubes 13 are applied interchangeabl with the tubes 8, and also there is provi ed an additional ex tension tube 14 for each tube 13 which additional tube has telescopic relation with the corresponding tub'e 13. The tubes 13 have made therein aseries of perforations 15, and a pin 16 extends through the tube 14 and through corresponding nerforations in the tube 13 whereby the tubes 13 and 14 are held in adjusted positions relative to each other. The perforations 15 in the tube 13 are spaced longitudinally with res ect to said tube which admits of securing t e tube 14 in various positions upon the tube 13, and in this manner the length of the jack may be varied. When the tube 14 is applied the stud of the tipextends its full length into the outer end of said tube, and the head 10 of the tip bears directly against the adjacent end of said tube.
For instances where a jack of comparative short length is required, the extension tubes 8, 13 and 14 may be dispensed with, in which event `the tips may be applied directly to the sleeves with the small ends 17 extending into. the outer ends of the sleeves respectively, which ends bear against the shoulders 12 on the studs of the corresponding tips.
In utilizing the invention, the operating member is turned in the sleeves until the sleeves closely approach the head 1, and the tips are applied to the outer ends of the sleeves, or, one or the other of the extension tubes 8 or 13 is placed telescopically onto the sleeves and the tips are inserted in the outer ends thereof. When ajack of intermediate length is required, one of the extension tubes ma be omitted. With the parts thus assemble the jack is applied to the frame members 18 and cross braces 1?, as indicated in Fig. 7, with the tips inserted at the corresponding junctures of the frame members and braces. By turning the ,head 1 of the operating member by means of the handle 5, more or lessI endwise pressure of the jack is exerted between its points of contact with the frame members 4and braces and with more or less endwise expansion according tothe extent the operating member is turned. The jack maybe applied in various other positions and to variousy other objects where force is required in moving objects apart. Y
The tips being wedge shaped at their outer ends fit lnore or less snugly in the corners between the side members and braces, and'in this manner turning movement of the tips upon their` axis is prevented. It has been found that the frictional contact between the tips and their sleeves, or their frictional contact with the extension tubes and the end thrust of the tubes on'the sleeves are such, when the j ack is in place, that turning movement of the sleeves is prevented las the operating member is actuated.
The outer ends of the tips being wedge shaped, when bearing forcibly against an object, resist turning movement which facilitates manipulation of the operating member.
W'hen the tip is applied to a rod, bead or flange, the notch 10 admits of placing the tip astride of such objects so that turning movement of the tip is thereby prevented.
lV hat I claim is 1. In a screw jack, an operating member having a head and oppositely disposed threaded studs, the spiral of the thread on the one stud being opposed to that on the other; a sleeve on each of said studs, having threaded relation therewith and being provided at its inner end with an external annular flange; an extension member consisting of a pair of telescoping tubes adjustably and removably connected together, one of said tubes having telescopind relation with the corresponding sleeve and bearing relation With the flangel thereon, there being another similar lextension member applicable to the other of said sleeves in like manner; andl a pair of tips, each having a head, the inner end of which has a stud provided with a series of concentric shoulders and being applicable to lit interchangeably in the corresponding-outer ends of said tubes and sleeve, said shoulders forming corresponding end-thrust bearings therefor.
2. In a screw jack, an operating member havin a head and oppositely disposed threat ed studs' with right and left hand threads respectively; a sleeve on each of said studs having threaded relation therewith and being provided at its inner end with an external flange; a tubular extension member for each sleeve, said extension having teleseoping relation with and being removable from the sleeve, one end of said extension having bearing relation with said flange; and tips having corresponding studs provided with concentric shoulders and being applicable to fit interchangeably in the corresponding outer ends of said tubular extensions and sleeves, said shoulders forming corresponding end-thrust bearings therefor.
In a screw jack, an operating member having a head and oppositely disposed studs with right and left hand threads respectively; ,a sleeve on each of said studs having threaded relation therewith provided at its inner end with a shoulder; a tubular extension for each sleeve having telescoping relation therewith, one end of which tube bears against said shoulder; and a pair of tips, each'having a wedge-shaped outer end and a stud on its inner end provided with concentric'A shoulders, said tips being interchangeably applicable to the outer ends of the corresponding tubes and sleeeves, the shoulders on said studs forming-end-thrust bearings for the corresponding ends of said tubes and sleeve.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
