CARTON HOLDER AND DELIVERY MECHANISM FOR DISPENSING MACHINES.

This application is a division of my original application Serial Number 90,761, and the present invention relates more specifically to the carton holding and delivering mechanism, particularly adapted though not necessarily limitedin its use in connection w1th the mechanism disclosed in said application, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide improved, simple, compact and eflicient means for holding a supply ofcartons, means for removing them separately from the supply, and means for causing the carton to be successively advanced to difierent working stations'in the machine in connection with which they are to be used and finally placing the carton in a position to be removed '4 from the machine.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention and in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a dispensing machine having a carton holding, receiving and delivery mechanism constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention applied thereto, and with the parts in one position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view similar to Figure 1, taken from the opposite side of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the closure and the operating means therefor for closing the opening through which the carton is delivered from the machine.

The cartons 10 are in the form of receptacles and are provided with slots or shouldered portions 11 in the sides thereof by means of which the cartons are removed from the supply. I
The material to be delivered into the cartons is supplied from a hopper or chute 12, having closures 13 which are operated in any suitable manner at predetermined times in the cycle of operation of the machine, as fully set forth in my original application.

The cartons are nested and are adapted to be delivered singly from the bottom of the 00' stack, automatically at the proper time in the operation of the machine. v
To that end there is provided adjacent the bottom of the hopper a controlling device which consists of a member 15 pivotally supmember is preferably of a double do like formation, one extremity, 17 thereof eing adapted to engage the pile of cartons above the lowermost carton for arresting the feed-= ing movement of the cartons when the lowermost one is being removed from the holder 14. The other extremity 18 0f the member 15 is adapted to be projected beneath the open end of the container or holder 14 to arrest the feeding movement of the cartons when the end 17 is withdrawn, and upon which end 18 the supply of cartons in the holder 14 rest.
An actuating arm 19 is provided for rocking the member 15 about its pivot and this arm is pivotally mounted, preferably 11 on the same pivot 16 as the member 15, an "is provided with a lug or lateral projection 20 that extends into and operates. within an elongated slot 21 in the member 15. The member 15 is swung about its pivot by the member 19 when the lug 20 engages one or the other of the extremities of the slot 21. A spring 22 is preferably provided which tends normally to move the arm 19 in one direction about its pivot and the arm is rocked about its pivot against the stress of the spring by a mechanism which will be presently described.
The delivery end of the hopper 12 and the delivery end 23 of the flavoring receptacle 24 are arranged in such a position with respect to each other that the carton when removed from the container 14 will be first presented to the hopper 12 to receive a supply of material and will then be carried to a position so that some of the contents of the receptacle 24 will be delivered into the carton, after which the filled carton will be positioned so that it ma be removed through the delivery outlet 25 see Figure 3) of the casing, which houses the mechanism. To this end the following mechanism is provided.
Carried by a reciprocable and rotatable shaft 26 is an arm or support 27 which projects laterally therefrom, and mounted upon the arm or support are two pairs of op osed dogs 28'29 preferably in the form 0 bell crank levers. These dogs are pivotally mounted respectively as at 3031 and the extremities of one of the ends of the levers are disposed in proximity to each other and are slotted.' A platform 32' is disposed between the dogs and is connected with the slotted extremities thereof.

y suitable means such as a spring 34 may be provided for swinging the dogs about their pivots away from each other, so as to permit one of the cartons to pass between and en age the platform 32. Pressure upon the plat orm will cause the latter to be lowered with respect to the arm 27 and the dogs 28-29 to be swung in the opposite direction about their pivots against the stress of the spring 34, so that the shoulders on the dogs will en-' gage the shoulders or in the recesses 11 on the carton 10. When the dogs are in this last recited position, and the arm or support 27 is lowered, one of the cartons will be removed from the container or holder 14.
Carried by the arm 27 is a projection 35 which, when the shaft 26 is elevated to cause the dogs 28 and 29 to grasp one of the cartons, will engage the arm 19 on the member 15 to swing the latter about its pivot for releasing the lowermost carton of the supply.
When the shaft 26 is lowered the carton which is engaged by the dogs 2829 will be removed and at the same time the arm 19 will be lowered to again swing the member 15 in another direction about its pivot to position another carton to be removed, the supply of cartons then dropping in the holder 14 until the lowermost carton rests upon the extremity 18 of the member 15.
The shaft 26 with the carton carried by the arm 27 and dogs 2829, will then be rotated in a manner to be presently described, so that the carton will then be positioned under the hopper 12, and in a position to receive a supply of material from the hopper when the closures 13 are opened.
The shaft 26 will then be again elevated and the projection 35 will engage an arm 36 to open the closures 13 to deliver a predetermined quantity of the contents of the hopper 12 into the carton.
The shaft 26 will then be lowered, carrying with it the filled carton. Upon the next step in the operation of the machine the shaft 26 will be further rotated to cause the filled carton to be carried to a position beneath the discharge outlet of the receptacle 24.
The shaft 26 is then again raised and the projection 35 will engage an arm 37 on a valve 38 which controls the outlet opening 23, to rotate the valve and thereby open the discharge outlet of the receptacle 24 to deliver a portion of the contents of the receptacle 24 into the filled carton.
-The shaft 26 is then again lowered, during which time the weight ofthe arm 37 will close the valve 38. When the shaft 26 reaches the limit of its lowering movement, it is then given another step of rotation so as to swing the filled carton into a position in proximity to the delivery opening 25 of the casing. This delivery opening 25 is closed by means of a sliding closure 39. The closure is adapted to be operated preferably by means of arms 40 pivotally mounted by one extremity as at 41. Links 42 are connected to the other extremities of the arms 40 and to the closure 39. Springs 43 are connected to the arms 40 and tend normally to move them in a direction 'to move the closure 39 in a direction to close the delivery outlet 25.
This closure 39 is adapted to be automatically opened when the filled carton is in proximity to the opening 25 and as a means for vaccomplishingthis result there are provided arms 44 which are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends as at 45. I Links 46 are connected by one end to the respective arms 44 and by their other ends to the arms 40.
The other extremities 47 of the arms 44 project into the path of the upward movement of the extension 33 on the dogs 29 carried by the arm or support 27, and these extremities 47 are so disposed that when the shaft 26 is elevated to position the filled carton adjacent the delivery opening 25, the extensions 33 of the dogs 29, will strike the extremities 47 of the arms 44, and the dogs will be first rocked about their pivots against the stress of the spring 34, to release the carton, after which the arms 44 will be rocked about their pivots to swing the arms 40 about their respective pivots against the stress of the springs 43, and through the medium of the links 42, the closure 39 will be shifted so that the filled carton can be removed through the opening When the shaft 26 is lowered again the springs 43 will operate to close the closure 39. The mechanism is operated from a motor (not shown) arranged within the casing and drives through the medium of a belt (not shown) a pulley 48 which is connected with a shaft 49 for rotation therewith.
The shaft is preferably located adjacent the base of the casing and is journaled in suitable bearings.
Connected with the shaft 49 is a clutch member, a portion of which is shaped to form a pulley 50 over which a belt 51 passes, and the belt also passes over another pulley 52 on a separate shaft. Connected to rotate with the pulley 52 is another pulley 53, and a belt 54 asses over the pulley 53 so that motion wil be imparted from the pulley 50, belt 51, ulley 52, pulley 53, belt 54, to another pu ley 55. This latter pulley operates the shaft 26 to reciprocate the latter and also impart intermittent ste s of rotation thereto.
This may be accomp ished in any desired or suitable manner, but preferably as follows.
The shaft 26 is mounted to rotate in bearings which slide upon guideways 56, and reciprocation is imparted to the shaft preferably through the medium of a link 57 wh ch is connected with the reciprocating bearing and also with the pulley 55.
The shaft 26 has connected with it a pluralit of pins or arms 58, preferably four in num r, one for each step of rotation to be imparted to the shaft. These pins or arms 58 project laterally from the shaft and are arranged within the path of movement of a tappet or projection59 projecting laterally from the face of the pulley 55, so that upon each complete rotation of the pulley 55, the shaft 26 will be given one step of rotation. Upon each complete cycle of rotation of the shaft 26 four steps of movement will have been imparted thereto, one step to position the carton receiving and removing mechanism between the carton container 14, the next step to position the carton beneath the supply hopper 12, the next step to position the carton beneath the receptacle 24, and the final step to position the carton adjacent the delivery opening 25.
The shaft 26 may be held against overthrow in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of a brake device embodying co-operating brake members 60 arranged on opposite sides of the shaft and may be of any desired or suitable construction.
If desired an additional safety device may be provided forpreventing the overthrow of the shaft 26 and embodies a disc like member 61 carried by the shaft and which member is provided with recesses or seats 62 on one face thereof, the sides of the seat being beveled or inclined. A stationar member 63 is arranged adjacent the pat of movement of the member 61 and the extremity of the member 63 projects over the disc 61 to enter one of the other recesses or seats 62 upon each movement of the shaft 26. 1
Thus it will be seen that as the shaft 26 is reciprocated it will be given an intermittent rotation and during this rotation the carton will be advanced and placed at different stations in the machine, while during its reciprocation the cartons will be raised and lowered, the first raising movement of the shaft 26 operating to raise the arm 27 to position the dogs 28 and 29 to grasp the lowermost carton and also operating to position the member 15 to release the lowermost carton so that when the carton is engaged by the dogs 28 29 and is removed the projection 18 on the member 15 will be swung into position to prevent the cartons in the holder 14 from dropping out of position.
While the lowermost carton is being removed from the holder the projection 17 on the member 15 serves to restrain the remainin cartons.
hile the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a holder for a supply of cartons, means for removing the cartons therefrom and for conveying them away, the said means including opposed carton engaging members movable toward and away from each other, means disposed between said members and adapted to be engaged by the carton when inserted therebetween for causing said members to be moved into gripping relation, and means for imparting a bodily movement to said members toward and away from the supply of cartons.
2. In combination, a holder for a supply of cartons, means for removing the cartons therefrom and for conveying them away, the said means including opposed carton engaging members movable toward and away from each other, means disposed between said members and adapted to be engaged by the carton when inserted therebetween for causing said members to be moved. into gripping relation, additional means for moving said members into inactive positions With respect to each other to permit the carton to be removed from the first recited means, and means for imparting a bodily movement of said members toward and away from the supply of cartons.

In a filling machine, a holder for a supply of cartons, a delivery outlet opening, a closure for controlling said opening, means for moving the cartons from said holder and conveying them away, the said means including opposed carton engaging members movable toward and away from each other, means disposed between said members and adapted to be engaged by the carton when inserted therebetween for causing said members to be moved into operative relation, and means common to the said members and the said clo sure for rendering the said members inactive and for causing said closure to become opened.

In combination, a holder for a supply of cartons, said holder being open at the bottom, a member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and having formations at its ends adapted to be alternately projected beneath the supply of cartons as the member is rocked, there being an elongated slot in said member, a pivotally mounted operating member, and a projection carried by the said operating member rojecting into and operable within said slot ibr swinging the firstrecited member about its pivot.

In combination, a holder for a supply of cartons, said holder being open at the bottom, 9. member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and having formations at its ends adapted to be alternately projected beneath the supply of cartons as the member is rocked, there being an elongated slotin the said member, a pivotally mounted operating member, a projection carried by the said operating member roj ecting into and operable within said slot For swinging the first recited member about its pivot, and means tending normally to move said operating member in one direction.

In combination, a holder for a supply of cartons, said holder being open at the bottom, amember pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and having formations at its ends adapted to longitudinally project beneath the supply of cartons as the member is rocked, a pivotally mounted operating member, and stops on the first recited member-into engagement with which a portion of the said operating member is adated to be alternately moved for swinging t e first recited member about its pivot.
7. In combination, a holder for a supply of cartons, said holder being open at the bottom, a member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and having formations at its ends adapted to longitudinally project beneath the supply of cartons as the member is rocked, a pivot-ally mounted operating member, stops on the first recited member into engagement with which a portion of the said operating member is adapted to be alternately moved for swinging the first recited member about its pivot, means for engaging and individually removing the cartons from the holder, and means responsive to the operation of the last recited means for actuating the said pivotally mounted operatin member.
8. In com ination, a holder for a supply of cartons, said holder being open at its bottom, a member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and having formations at its ends adapted to be alternately projected beneath the supply of cartons as the member is rocked, a piv-" otally mounted operating member, said operating member being movable independently with respect to the first said pivotally mounted member, spaced stops onone of said members ada ted to be engaged by the other member or rocking the first recited member about its pivot, means tending normally to move the pivotally mounted member in one direction to swing the first recited pivotally mounted member in one direction, means for successively removing the cartons from the bottom of the suppl and means responsive to the operation of t e last recited means for actuating the said pivotally mounted member in the opposite direction to swing the first recited pivotally mounted member in the opposite direction.
