LAMP.
Application filed January 31, 1927. Serial No. 164,943.
The invention relates to lamps designed particularly for use within the interiors of closed motor vehicle bodies and has for its principal object the provision of a lamp constructed to illuminate by indirect lighting.
Another object is to provide a shield comprising a glass opposite the light bulb and a retainer for the glass having an opening therethrough laterally spaced from the l1ght bulb whereby the lamp illuminates both by indirect lighting and diffused direct lighting. Further objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a lamp embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 8-3 of Figure 2.
In the present instance I have shown a dome lamp in which 1 is the hollow or dish-shaped body preferably formed of sheet metal and having the annular rim 2 surrounding the light opening. This body is provided with the openings 3 through which may extend suitable means such as screws for securing the body to the supporting member. 4 is the shield located in the light opening and com prising the glass 5 and retainer 6 for the glass. This glass is located opposite the light bulb 7 which is mounted in the socket 8 extending through and secured to the body 1. The retainer 6 is preferably formed of sheet metal and in one piece and has the concentric inner and outer rims 9 and 10, respectively, which are connected by the radially extending arms 11 integral therewith and forming the openings 12 which are laterally spaced from the light bulb 7 for the indirect passage of light. The inner face of the body 1 is preferably polished to form a reflector to reflect the, light through the openings. The rims and arms are preferably channel-shaped to reinforce the retainer and the inner leg 13 of the inner rim is shorter than the outer leg ll to provide for locating the annular flange 15 of the glass in the space between the planes of the ends of these legs. The end of the inner leg abuts the outer face of the flange while suitable securing means such as the L-shaped clips 16 soldered at peripheral points upon the leg ll engage the inner face of the flange to securely hold the glass in place.
To position the shield and detachably secure the same to the body the body 1 is formed with the annular shoulder 17 spaced from the rim 2 and engageable with the end of the outer leg of the outer rim 10. The wall connecting the annular shoulder and rim is formed with I when engaging the same with or disengaging the same from the body by reason of the open ings in the glass retainer permitting of inserting the fingers through the shield to grip the same.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a lamp for vehicle bodies, the combination of a body within which thelight bulb extends and a shield secured to said body and including a glass opposite the bulb, and a sheet metal retainer for the glass having inner and outer rims with portions spaced from each other to form openings, said rims being channel-shaped to reinforce said retainer.
2. In a lamp forvehicle bodies, the combination of a body within which the light bulb extends and a shield secured to said body and including a glass opposite the bulb, and a retainer for the glass having an opening therein laterally spaced from the bulb and an outer channel-shaped rim, said body and rim having cooperating bayonet recesses and projections engageable therein for detachably securing said shield to said body.

In a lamp for vehicle bodies, the combination of a body within which the light bulb extends having a rim and an annular shoulder spaced therefrom and a shield secured to said body and including a glass opposite the bulb, and a sheet metal retainer for the glass having spaced inner and outer channel-shaped rims and arms extending between and integrally connected thereto, inwardly depressed projections upon the Wall of said-body between said rim and annular shoulder, and cooperating pressed-out bayonet recesses upon the 5 outer leg of said outer rim for engagement by said project-ions.
4:. In a lamp for vehiclebodies, the combination of a body Within which the light bulb extends, and a shield secured to said body and having a portion opposite the bulb for 0 diffusing the light from the bulb and a portion laterally spaced from the bulb for the passage of light from the bulb.
