OIL HAND-PRESSURE DEVICE.

This invention relates to an oil can and has for its object the provision of means for discharging oil under pressure.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an oil can having pumping means thereon for discharging oil under ressure and valve mechanism for permitting the pressure to be released.
A further object of my invention isthe provision of means for pneuinatically d ischarging oil from a container while retaining compressed air and oil separated during actuation of the device.
A still further object of my inventlon is the provision of means for retracting oil from the discharge portion of my improved oiling device when it is desired to discontinue use thereof to prevent-wasteful dripping of oil.
Other objects will appear hereinafter, the novel features and combinations being more clearly set forth in the appended claims.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1 the numeral designates a top section of a container comprising substantially a conical member which is provided at its upper end with a threaded extension 11 and at its lower end with a threaded extension 12. The threaded extension 11 is adapted to accommodate a threaded cap 12 having a flexible discharge member 13 communicating with the cap mounted thereon. The end of the flexible tubular discharge member 13 is provided with a nozzle 14.
The lower section 15 of the container is threadedly connected to the lower extension of the top section 10 and is provided with a plunger or piston 16. The piston 16. is urged downwardly by a spring 17 which engages the piston at its lower end and which abuts against a ring 18 rigidly mounted on the upper end portion of the lower section 15. Stops 19 and 20 are mounted on the inner surface of the container section 15 for limiting the downward motion of the plunger 16.
A tubular member or cylinder 21 is integral with a handle 22 mounted on the side of the container section 15 and is secured there to by solder at the line of tangency between the container section and the cylinder. As
shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the handle 22 is se- I vided with a rod l23 having a knob 23 on the upper extremity thereof. The side of the tubular member 21 is provided with an aperture 25 which registers with an aperture in the side of the container section 15. 'A yalve 26 is slidably mounted on a bracket 27 in the lower container section and is urged outwardly by a spring 28 which normally tends to retain the opening in the side olf the lower container section closed. A tubular member 29 is disposed through the outermost portion of the handle 22 and communicates at its lower end with an aperture 30 in the side of the cylinder 21 opposite from the aperture 25 thereof. The upper end of the tube 29 communicates with an aperture 31 in the upper end of the handle 22. A valve comprising a lever 32 is pivotally mounted at 33 on the upper end of the handle 22 and is provided with a spring 34 for normally holding the valve over the aperture 31 in closed position.
In the operation of the device oil is retained in the container sections 10 and 15 and is discharged through the tubular meinber 13 and nozzle 14 as hereinafter described. When the valve 32 is moved to open position and the plunger 24 is actuated, air is forced into the lower container section 15 beneath the plunger or piston 16; the air being drawn in during the upward stroke of the plunger 24 through the tubular member 29 when the valve 32 is open. When the plunger 24 is moved downwardly, the valve 32 may be retained in closed position by the spring 34 and by additional pressure if desired by holding the same down with a thumb or finger of the hand gripping the handle 22. The air which is forced into the container section lifts the plunger 16 against the action of the spring 17 and forces the oil thereabove through the tubular member 13. vIt should be understood that when it is desired to return the plunger 24 to its lower position without discharging oil from the device, the valve 32 may be opened to permit esca ement of air through the tubular mem er 29. The valve 26, being a one way valve prevents the escapement of air from beneath the piston 16 and thus retains the same in a raised position ready to discharge oil from the device upon slight actuation of the plunger 24.
The valve 26 is provided with an extension 35 having a roller 36 on the eiitremity thereof. The piston 24 is providedwith a cam extension 37 comprising an inclined edge 38 which is adapted to engage the roller 36 for moving the extension 35 and the valve 26 inwardly to permit escapement of airfroni beneath the piston 16 of the lower container section when desired. It should be understood that when the piston 24 is moved to its lowermost position the valve 26 is opened and that by .thus discharging the air from beneath the piston 16 the spring 17 is permitted to move the same downwardly and the oil which is in the up permost section 10 and in the nozzle 14 and tube 13 is sucked back into the lower container.
Having thus shown and described an embodiment of my invention what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a container, a plunger slidably mounted in said container, a handle on saidcontainer, a cylinder mounted in said handle adjacent said container having an aperture therein communicating with an aperture in said container, a piston within the cylinder, arran e d for moving downwards, an air inlet con uit disposed through said handle communicating with tlie bottom portion of said cylinder at its lower end and with an inlet aperture in the top of said handle at its upper extremity, a valve pivotally mounted on said handle for normally closing said inlet aperture, a one way valve mounted in the aperture of said container adapted to permit air to enter the latter from said cylinder when the piston therein is moved downwardly for raising said plunger to discharge oil from said container and a spring disposed in said container and engaged against said plunger for urging the y same downwardly.
2. A device of the class described comprising a container, a plunger slidably mounted in said container, a han le on said container, a cylinder mounted in said handle adjacent said container having an aperture therein communicating with an aperture in said container, a piston within the cylinder, arran ed for moving downwards, an air inlet con uit disposed through said handle communicating with the bottom ortion of said cylinder at its lower end an with an inlet aperture in the top of said handle at its upper extremity, a valve pivotally mounted on said handle for normally closing said inlet aperture, a one way valve mounted in the aperture of said container adapted to permit air to enter tlie latter from said cylinder when the piston therein is moved downwardly for raising said plunger to discharge oil from said container, a spring disposed in said container and engaged against said plunger` for urgin the same downwardly, an ,extension on sai last mentioned valve, a roller on said extension, and a cam member on said piston adapted to engage said roller for moving said extension and the valve upon which it is mounted inwardly to permit escapeinent of air from beneath said plunger to allow the same to be moved downwardly by the action of said sprmor 3. device of the class described comprising a container, a plunger slidably mounted in said container, a handle on said container, a cylinder mounted in said handle adjacent said container having an aperture therein communicating with an aperture in said container, a piston within the cylinder arranged for movin downwards, an air inlet conduit disposed t rough said handle communicating with the bottom portion of said cylinder `at its lower end and with an inlet aperture in the top of said handle at its upper extremity, a valve pivotally mounted on said handle for normally closing said inlet aperture, a one way valve mounted in the aperture of said container adapted to permit air to enter the latter from said cylinder when the piston therein is moved downwardly for raising said plunger to discharge oil from said container, and means for urging the plunger downwards.
