Description
bUNIIjED `sfTAIEIS PATENT OFFICE.
H. F. PURMORT, OF SAGINAW CITY, MICHIGAN.
SAWING-IVIACI-IINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,112, dated April 21, 185'?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. F. PURMoRT, of Saginaw city, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have inventeda new and Improved Sawing- Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my improvement, Fig. 3, showing the plane of section. Fig. 2, is also a vertical section of ditto, ggg, Fig. 8, showing the plane of section. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, A, represent two ways on which the carriage B, is placed, the 'under side ofthe carriage having a rack a, attached at each side, in which rack pinions 7), b, gear. The pinions Z9, are placed on` a shaft C, which passes transversely through the ways A, A, and also through a rectangular frame D, adjoining the ways A, A, see Figs. 1 and 3.
On the carriage B', there are placed two head blocks E, E, one being at each end of the carriageand placed transversely upon it. In each block E, a sliding head F, is placed. These heads are attached to rack c, c, and in each rack a pinion d, gears, the pinions being upon a shaft G, placed longi` tudinally with the carriage B, the ends of said shaft having its bearings in theblock E.
On the shaft G, a ratchet H, is placed and a pawl c, gears into said ratchet, said pawl being pivoted to an arm I, the inner end of which is fitted loosely on the shaft G. The outer end of the arm I, is pivoted to the lower end of a rod J, the upper end of said rod being pivoted to one end of a right angled or bent lever K, which is pivoted to the upper end of anupright L, attached to one of the blocks E. The opposite end of this lever K, has a 'rod M pivoted to it, the outer end of which is attached to a hand lever N, the lever N, being pivoted to a horizontal arm O, attached to the upright L.
From the above description of parts it will be seen that by operating the lever N, the pawl e, will act against the ratchet H, and the shaft G, will be turned and the two heads F, F, will be moved simultaneously, so that the proper set is given the log which is attached to the heads F, by dogs f. The log is shown in Fig. l, and represented by P.
Q, is a driving shaft and saw arbor placed en the `frame D. The saw R, is placed on v the inner end of this shaft.
S, is a pulley placed on the shaft Q, and a set of cone pulleys T, is placed on the outer end of said shaft.
U, is a small shaft placed below the shaft C. The inner end of the shaft U, has a wheel V, upon it. W, is a shaft placed above the shaft C, and the inner end of the shaft W, hasa wheel X1 upon it. The shaft C, also has a wheel Y, upon it. The wheels V, X, Y, have smooth peripheries. The inner end of the shaft W, has its bearings g, at the inner end of a lever e, which is jointed to the frame D. The inner end of the shaft U, has its bearing in an arm one end of which is jointed to the frame D, andthe opposite end is attached to the lower end of'a rod il, the upper end of said rod being connected to the lever c. These parts are clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The shafts W, and U, are driven by belts from the cone pulleys T.
From the above description it will be seen that the motion ofthe carriage B, may be moved in either direction according to which of the two wheels V, X, is thrown in gear with the wheel Y, by operating the lever a,
which is done by moving `a lever A1, attached to the lever c, by an arm al, and connecting rod b1. Thus it will be seen that a direct feed motion is given the carriage B, and by merely moving the lever Al the carriage is gigged back. Y
The wheels V, X, Y, may have their peripheries covered with leather or other proper material and the usual guides may be fitted to the saw R.
The above machine may be operated with the greatest facility, the log or board being set to the saw by merely adjusting .the lever N, and the carriage gigged back by adjusting the lever A1. The machine may be used -for sawing direct from the log or for resawlng.
I am aware that the blocks of saw-mills have been operated simultaneously, both by hand and automatically, and also that reciprocal motion has been reversed in the same or in a way equivalent to that herein described. I do not claim, therefore, sepaand the carriage B, operated by the Wheels l0 rately, the parts for effecting the purposes V, X, placed on the shafts U, W, when the above stated; but above parts are arranged as herein shown Having thus described the nature of Iny and described for the purpose set forth. 5 inventlon, What I claim as new and desire H F PURMORT to secure by Letters Patent, is Y y y The sliding heads, F, F, placed on the Witnesses: blocks E, E, and operated by the pinions I. BAXTER, (d), racks (c), paWl (e), and ratchet I-I, A. W. BACON.
