UNIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G, S HELTON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
nam-wavmc ncuxrmrmr.
Application filed May 26, 1928. Serial No. 280,793.
My invention relates to the hair waving industry and consists in equipment to be used and in order to hold the strand of hair tightly wrapped about the rod it has beenthe practice to use comparatively expensive two-part rods which are adapted to be rotated relatively to each other, one of the parts having one end of the strand connected thereto and the other part having the other end of the strand connected thereto.
It is an object of my invention to provide a cushion for the hair which will serve to space the same from the metal rod and thereby tend to avoidscorching of the hair by an overheated rod.
It is another object of my invention to provide an absorbent pad within the curl. This pad may be moistened and thereby more thoroughly steam the entire strand than is POSSI- 2 .ble where the moisture is only applied to the exterior surface of the curl. 7
It is a further object of my invention to secure the same result of a tightly wrapped curl without necessitating a two-part rod.
The above-mentioned objects are attained by the use of a fabric tube, preferably of compressible, elastic and absorbent material, and adapted to receive an ordinary plain curling rod.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a selected embodiment of my invention- Figure 1 is an elevation of an ordinary rod having a'tube such as I have referredto ap- 40 plied thereto and showing a strand of hair wound about the combined tube and rod.
Figure 2 is a view of the tube alone.
Figure'3 is a transverse section taken on. a
line 3-3 of Figurel.
It will be understood that the rod 1 is of any ordinary type, having a bifurcated portion 2 adapted to receive the cord 3 which ties one end of the strand of hair 4 to the red. It will be understood. that this end of the rod I0 is placed adjacent to the scalp of the customer. Surrounding the rod is a tube 5 of woven or felted fabric material, preferably formed so as to be absorbent, to hold mois- I ture, compressible, to permit tighter wrappin of the hair thereon, and elastic, to yield- 1ng y on age the surface of the rod to which it is app ied and also to permit the insertion of rods of different diameters. Preferably the tube will be formed of asbestos composition, thereby increasing the mar in of safety against any possible burning of the hair or scalp due to ignition ofthe tube from the heater which is applied over the same. f
After the strand of hair has beenwrapped about the tube, the outer end-of the strand may be tied by a string 6 in the usual manner and the rod and tube may be twisted relatively to each other to tighten the strand of hair and the friction between the rod and the tube will result in the strand being held in tightened position at any desired point.
Before the strand of hair is wrapped about the tube, the latter may be dipped into a liquid solution, such as is in common use, for providing steam when heated, but it will be un-, derstood that it is not essential to moisten the tube as it may be used in a dry condition, particularly where coarse hair or a thin strand of hair is involved, in which cases the steam supplied in the usual wayfrom the outer wrapper will be suflicient for the desired purpose.
It .will be understood that the tubes as indicated in Figure 2 may be supplied independently of the rods, and that, if desired, they may be discarded after a single use so that each customer may be supplied with a fresh set of tubes for her partlcular treatment. I y
I contemplate the exclusive use of my invention as expressed in my claims irrespective of whether or not all of the functions referred to above are utilized.
7 I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a fabric tube adapted to receive and snugly engage a hair curling rod and possessing suflicient elasticity to fit tightly different curling rods rigid, solid curling rod, and a readily detachable tube of compressible elastic fabric material surrounding said rod.
4. Hair waving equipment comprising a 5 rigid, solid. curling rod, and a readily removable fabrie tube forming an elastic pad of compressible and said rod.
absorbent material about 5. Hair waving equipment comprisinga rigid, solid curling rod, and a readily remov-' 10 able fabric tube forming an elastic pad of obsorbent material yieldingly engaging said rod and about which hair may be wound.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature this 24th day of Ma 1928.
, WILLIAM G. HELTON.
