PRINTER S FRAME.
Application filed October 2'7, 192?, Serial No. 229,023.
This invention relates to printers frames and particularly to devices of this class in which printed sheets are fed from a press and through which the sheets pass in a fluttering or jogging fashion to permit the thor ough drying of the print or ink to prevent what is known as offsetting; and the object of the'invention is to provide a frame of the class specified, consisting of a plurality of substantially similar L-shaped parts forming the corner portions as well as side and end walls of the frame, with means for adjustably coupling said parts together to form a rectangular frame, the dimensions of the inner walls of which correspond to the dimensions of the work sheet adapted to be placed in said frame; a further object being to provide a frame of the class described with means for coupling, supporting or mounting rods in connection therewith for suspending the frame in connection with a printing press and over a vertically movable receiving table of the press; a further object being to provide said supporting rods with hookshaped brackets, adjustable relatively to the end portions of said rods to adapt said supporting rods to slight variations in the construction of the supporting means of the pres and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, eflicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention described and claimed herein is an improvement on that shown and described in a prior application filed by me March 17, 1927, and bearing Serial No. 175,990, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic, perspective view ofa part of a press showing my improved frame mounted in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the frame, and showing the rods of the press in connection with which the frame is supported.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one corner of the frame, on an enlarged scale, looking in'the direction of the arrow 4, Fig. 2'; and,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another corner of the frame, looking in the direction of the arrow 5, Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, 1 have diagram matically shown for the purpose of illustrating one use of my invention a part 10 of what is known as a Kelly press, and at 11 a receiv ing table, movably supported in connection with four vertical frame members 12, the upper ends of which are joined by cross members 13 having on their inner faces, rods 14, which are indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This structure constitutes no direct part of my invention. At 15, I have shown one of my improved frames supported in connection with the rods 14. The frame 15' consists of two pairs of similar frame members 1616, 17-17 arranged in opposite relation and being L- haped inform, and formin the corner portions as well as side walls of the frame. The following brief description of one member in each pair, will apply to both members. a
The member 16 has walls 16 and 16 arranged at right angles to each other, the upper edge of said walls having downwardly turned flanged 18 forming guide channels for the corresponding edges of the walls of the member 17. The lower edges of said walls are provided with outwardly and inwardly turned guide flanges 19. Secured. to the wall 16 adjacent its intersection with the wall 16, is an apertured lug 20 which projects beyond the face of the walls 16 and forms a supporting bracket to receive one of two supporting rods 21 and 21.
V The member 17 is provided with side walls 17 and 17 arranged at right angles toeach other, the lower edges of said walls having outwardly extending flanges 22 adapted to enter the flanges 19 of the walls 16 and 16 whereas the upper edges of the walls 1'7 and 17 enter the downwardly turned flanges 18. The wall 17 slidably engages the wall 16", and the wall 17 slidably engages the wall 16. An apertured lug 23 is secured to the wall 17 adjacent the corner portion of the member 17 and extends beyond the face of the wall 17 to form a supporting bracket in alinement with the bracket 20 in which the rod 2121 is mounted. A similar bracket 23 is secured to the outer face of the wall 17" adjacent the free end thereof and on the outer face thereof, said bracket being in alinement with the brackets 20 and 23, and having an aperture through which the rod 2121 passes.
Adjacent the free ends of the walls 17" and 17 at the upper portions thereof are secured outwardly projecting screws .24 which are arranged beneath the flanges 18 of the member 16 and mounted on these screws are large washers 25 which are adapted to overlie the flanges 18 as clearly seen in Figs. 3 and 4, and winged or other nuts 26 are mounted on the screws 24 and are adapted to move the washers 25 into firm engagement with the flanges 18 to couple the members 16 and 17 together in different positions of adjustment. The ends of the walls 17 are preferably offset outwardly as seen at 27, note Fig. 4 to provide for the passage of the lugs or brackets 20 onto the inner face of said walls in moving all of the members 1617 into a fully collapsed position.
The rods 21 and 21 are threaded at their free ends and adj ustably mounted thereon are hook-shaped members 28 adapted to be passed over the rods 14: in supporting the frame within the frame members 13, and over the vertically movable table 11 of the press. The ad justment of the members 28 permits of the adaptation of the de ice to slight variations in the spacing of the rods 14. It will be understood that the frame in its adjusted position may be moved longitudinally of the rods 2121 to center the frame with reference to the table 11 and moved longitudinally of the rods 14 for a similar purpose.
In the use of the device, it will be understood that the separate members in each pair are coupled together in the manner described, and when so coupled are adjusted for use in connection with a workpiece or printed matter of predetermined length and width by the separation of the side and end walls of the frame, and securing the same in adjusted position by tightening the nuts 26. In placing the frame in the machine, the table 11 will be moved upwardly into engagement with the lower surface of the frame 15, and as the separate printed sheets are delivered from the press onto the table 11 in the usual manner, said sheets pass downwardly through the compartment within the walls of the frame 15 and are retarded in this progress by virtue of the pocket of air contained below the sheet delivered into the frame. This sheet gradually settles onto the table in a jogging or fluttering fashion, giving ample time for the hot air contained within the frame and beneath the sheet to thoroughly dry the ink or print on the sheet, and thus prevent what is known as offsetting.
It will be understood that a number of sheets may be gradually settling in the frame 11 at one time during the operation of the press, and as the sheets begin to pile up on the table 11, the table is lowered in the usual manner to leave ample room within the frame 15 to permit of the successful operating of drying the print or ink on the workpiece in preventing the offsetting thereof.
It will be understood that my invention is not necessarily limited to the specific use of the frame herein shown and described, nor to the specific structure of the frame herein disclosed, and various other changes therein and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims, withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a press having :a vertically movable workpiece receiving table, of a jogger frame supported above and independent of said table into and through which printed matter delivered from the press is adapted to pass, means for supporting said frame in connection with machine, said frame comprising two pairs of L-shapedframemembers, the adjacent walls of said frame members overlapping and interlocking one with the other, means for adjusting the relative positions of said members to form a frame of predetermined dimensions, and the supporting means of said frame comprising rods arranged adjacent and slid-ably engaging opposite side walls of said frame.
2. A frame of the class described comprising two pairs of frame members, the members in each pair being of similar construction and L-shaped'inform, the side walls of one frame having at their upper ends downwardly turned flanges, and at their lower ends outwardly and inwardly turned flanges, the upper ends of the walls of the other members engaging said upper flanges, and the lower walls of the other pair of members having outwardly turned flanges engaging said upwardly and inwardly turned flanges, screws secured to and projecting outwardly from the side walls of the second named pair of frame members adjacent the ends thereof, and means on said screws engaging the flanges at the upper ends of the first named pair of members for securing said frame members in different positions of adjustment.
3. A frame of the class described comprising two pairs of frame members, the members in each pair being of similar construction and L-shaped in form, the side walls of one frame having at their upper ends downwardly turned flanges and at their lower ends, outwardly and inwardly turned flanges, the upper ends of the walls of the other members engaging said upper flanges, and the lower walls of the other pair of members having outwardly turned flanges engaging said upwardly and inwardly turned flanges, screws secured to and projecting outwardly from the side walls of the second named pair of frame members adjacent the ends thereof, means on said screws engaging the flanges at the upper ends of the first named pair of members for securing said frame members in different positions of adjustment, and all of said frame members having outwardly extending and apertured brackets arranged on opposite side walls of the frame when as sembled, and supporting rods mounted in and slidably engaging said brackets.
4. A frame of the class described comprising two pairs of frame members, the mem bers in each pair being of similar construction and L-shaped in form, the side walls of one frame having at their upper ends downwardly turned flanges, and at their lower ends outwardly and inwardly turned flanges, the upper ends of the walls of the other members engaging said upper flanges, and the lower walls of the other pair of members having outwardly turned flanges engaging said upwardly and inwardly turned flanges, screws secured to andprojecting outwardly from the side Walls of the second named pair of frame members adjacent the ends thereof,
means on said screws engaging the flanges at the upper ends of the first named pair of members for securing said frame members in different positions of adjustment, all of said frame members having outwardly extending and apertured brackets arranged 011 opposite side walls of the frame when assembled, supporting rods mounted in and slidably engaging said brackets, and members adjustably coupled with the ends of said rods for coupling the same and said frame in connection with a suitable support.
5. A frame of the class described comprising two pairs of frame members, the members in each pair being of similar construction and L-shaped in form, the side walls of one frame having at their upper ends downwardly turned flanges, and at their lower ends outwardly and inwardly turned flanges, the upper ends of the walls of the other members engaging said upper flanges, and the lower walls of the other pair of members having outwardly turned flanges engaging said upwardly and inwardly turned flanges, screws secured to and projecting outwardly from the side walls of the second named pair of frame members adjacent the ends thereof, means on said screws engaging the flanges at the upper ends of the first named pair of members for securing said frame members in different positions of adjustment, all of said frame members having outwardly extending and apertured brackets arranged on opposite side walls of the frame when. assembled, supporting rods mounted in and slidably engaging said brackets, and' members adjustably coupled with the ends of said rods for coupling the same and said frame in connection with a suitable support, said last named members being hook-shaped in form.
6. The combination with a frame of the class described employing relatively adjustable parts, of supporting rods arranged in parallel relation and slidably engaging said parts.
7. The combination with a frame of the class described employing relatively adjustable parts, of supporting rods arranged in parallel relation and slidably engaging said parts, and the ends of said rods having supporting brackets.
8. The combination with a frame of the class described employing relatively adjustable parts, of supporting rods arranged in parallel relation and slidably engaging said parts, and the ends of said rods having supporting brackets hook-shaped in form,
9. The combination with a frame of the class described employing relatively adjustable parts, of supporting rods arranged in parallel relation and slidably engaging said parts, and the ends of said rods having supporting brackets, adjustably supported on said rods.
10. The combination with a frame composed of two pairs of L-shaped frame members, the walls of said members overlapping, interlocking and telescoping to form a rectangular frame of predetermined dimensions, of means slidably engaging opposite walls of said frame for mounting the same in connection with a suitable support, said means being arranged outwardly of the walls of the frame.
11. The combination with a rectangular jogger frame of the class described, of members slidably engaging and arranged at opposite sides and outwardly of said frame for mounting the same in connection with a suitable support.
