REMOVABLE FOURDRINIER PAPER MACHINE.

This invention relates to a removable type Fourdrinier paper machine and, more particularly to the combination with a removablle Fourdrinier of a cantilever type couch Heretofore, in the construction of Fourdrinier machines, provision has generally been made for manually supporting one end of the couch roll above its supporting pedestal when putting on a new wire, or, 1f the Fourdrinier is of the removable type, of supporting the couch roll on the removable table structure for removal therewith. The first method entails 'a considerable amount of manual labor and the second has the disadvantage that it materialliyx1 adds to the weight of the table structure t ereby necessitating heavier and more expensive construction.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a combination of a cantilever. typel couch roll with a removable Fourdrinier, -wherein mechanical means are employed for supporting the couch roll from one end only to permit the ready insertion of a loop of a new Fourdrinier wire over the couch roll and the Stringing of the wire in place while the Fourdrinier table structure 1s` in removed position.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a combination ofa suction couch roll with a laterally removable l Fourdrinier,
.wherein the construction of the suction couch roll and its mountings particularly lend themselves in connection vWlth the removable feature of the Fourdrinier to the ready changing of the wire.
It is a further object vof this invention to provide a Fourdrinier paper machine having the combined features of a laterally remov-` able Fourdrinier table structure capable of ready adjustment as to pitch or inclination, a separately mounted suction couch roll of the cantilever type and a separately mounted breast roll adapted to be transferred to and removed with the table structure.
Other and further important ,objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying' drawings. i

ing application entitled Fourdrinier paper machine, Serial No. 192,877, filed May 20, 1927. Said table structure 1 comprises a pair of side beams 2y supporting therefrom on table rails 3 a plurality of table rolls 4. Said table structure 1 also includes the usual suction boxes 5 over which and the table rolls 4 i's adapted to pass aFourdrinier wire 6 in the usual manner. Said wire 6 is also trained around and encloses a separately mounted breast roll 7 and a separately mounted suction couch roll 8, the usual wire guiding and tensioning rolls' 9 being provided for the lower run of the wire.
The table structure 1 is supported as a whole at its breast roll end upon brackets 10 formed with cylindrical seats 11 for pivotal movement about fulcrum supports 12, and at its couch roll end is mounted upon jack screws 13. Intermediate between said points of support are positioned tracks 14 and 15 extending ltransversely of the machine and pivotally mounted at their opposite ends for movement into longitudinal position with respect to the machine when the Wire is being changed. Each of said tracks 14 and 15 is normally positioned below and out of contact with rollers 16 and 17 carried by the table structure, the track 14 being at a oonsiderably lower elevation than the track 15.
Accordingly, when the couch roll end of the table structure 1 is lowered by means of the jack screws 13 until the rollers 16 and 17- means of horizontal spring members 22. A shaking mechanism designated as a whole by the reference numeral 23 is connected by readily removable spring members 24 to the rear reast roll support and by other spring members 25 to the rear table rail 3 through shaker arms 26. It is thus apparent that the breast roll may be separately shaken or shaken together with the table rolls 4. Mechanism including removable bearing members 27 and bridge members 28 are provided in accordance with the invention disclosed in the Berry Patent, No. 1,599,402, which issued September 14, 1926, for transfer". ring the breast roll 7 onto the table structure 1 for removal therewith.
A head box 28a and apron 29 are provided of any standard construction for supplying stock to the wire. Deckle straps 30 trained around deckle pulleys 31 and 32 perform their usual function in determining the width of the web formed on the machine. The rear deckle pulleys 31 are supported from brackets 33, and the forward dcckle pulleys 32 are adapted to be raised by means of chains 32a when a wire is to be changed.
The suction couch roll 8 is of the same general construction as that disclosed inthe Berry Patent, Reissue No. 16,848, issued January 10, 1928. Said suction roll 8, as best shown in Figures 3 and 4, comprises a perforated cylindrical shell 34 having circular heads 35 and 36.
Said heads 35 and 36 are each formed with cylindrical front and rear extensions 37 and 38 respectively, said extension 38 being further formed with an elongated reduced end 39. A stationary suction chamber 40 extends through said cylindrical portions 37 and 38 and is provided with bearing sleeves for permitting relative rotation between said shell 34 and the stationary suction chamber 40. A bearing housing 41 encloses the cylindrical extension 38 and is provided with a bearing sleeve 42 for rotatably supporting said cylindrical. extension 38. The lower portion of said bearing housing 41 is formed with a partially cylindrical surface 43 adapted to seat in a correspondingly curved bearing seat 44 formed on the top of a supporting pedestal 45. The reduced end 39 extends through a relatively larger opening 46 formed in a yoke 47 and carries upon its projecting end a clutch member 48 for connection with a clutch member 49 on a drive shaft 50. A manually operable screw 51 extends through the upper portion of the yoke 47 and carries at its lower end a loosely mounted block 52 through which pressure may be applied by turning the screw 51 to depress the reduced end 39 and effect tilting movement of the suction roll 8 about the bearing support as a fulcrum.
The front end of the suction chamber 40 extends through the cylindrical head portion 37 and is supported in a housing 53 upon the hollow pedestal 54, said pedestal 54 and housing 53 being provided with cooperating flanges 55 and 56 respectively. An elbow 27,preferably integrallyformed with the hollow pedestal 54, is adapted to be connected by means of bolts 58 to a suction pipe 59, through which and the housing 53 suction may be applied tothe interioi of the suction chamber 40. Said hollow pedestal 54 rests upon a support or floor 6() and is secured by means of a bolt 61 extending into a` recessed portion 62 of said pedestal 54. A nut 63 is threaded upon the end of said bolt 61 within the recess 62 and may be loosened to permit swinging movement of the pedestal 54 into the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 4. When the suction roll 8 has been tilted as above described, there is provided sufficient space 64 between said flanges 55 and 56 to permit swinging movement of the pedestal 54.
It will be readily apparent from the above combined features that the changing of a wire upon a. Fourdrinier embodying our invention is a relatively simple procedure. After the old wire has been cut from the machine, the breast roll 7 is transferred over the bridge members 28 to rest upon a portion of the Fourdrinier table structure 1. The deckle straps 30 are elevated and held out ofthe way by means of the chains 32a and the table structure 1 lowered by means of the jack screws 13 upon the tracks 14 and 15 respectively.
The table structure is then rolled by power operated means out onto the outer tracks 18 and 19 and the inner tracks 14 and 15 swung longitudinally of the machine, the wire guiding and tensioning rolls 9 having been removed where necessary. The suction roll 8 is then tilted in the manner above described to permit the insertion of a loop of the new Wire over its front freely supported end, and the wire is strung in a well known manner to allow the table structure 1 to be rolled back into normal position.
While we have explained our invention, as embodied in the combination of av suction couch roll of the cantilever or overhanging type with a laterally removable table structure, it will be understood that the advantages of our invention will also be realized by the combination of an ordinary couch roll posessing the cantilever feature described with any removable type of Fourdrinier, as for instance, a Fourdrinier having a sectionally removable table structure.
We are aware that many changes may be made, and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and we therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a Fourdrinier paper machine, the combination with a removable Fourdrinier table structure, of a ,cantilever type couch vroll adapted to be supported from one end to permit the insertion of a loop of a Fourdrinier wire over the other end thereof.
2'. In a Fourdrinier paper machine, the combination with a laterally removable Fourdrinier table structure, of a cantilever type suction couch roll, means for laterally removing said table structure, and means for supporting said couch roll from one end to permit the Stringing of a new wire.
3. In a Fourdrinicr paper machine, the combination with a laterally removable unitary table structure, of a separately mounted suction couch roll, a wire normally passing around said couch roll and table structure, means for laterally removing said table structure and means for supporting said couch roll from one end only to permit a new wire to be inserted over the free end of said couch roll and to be suspended in place While said table structure is in removed position.
4. In a Fourdrinier paper machine, a laterally removable table structure, separately mounted breast and couch rolls, means for transferring said breast roll to said table structure for removal therewith, and means for supporting said couch roll from one end only to permit the Stringing of a new wire.
5. In a Fourdrinier paper machine, a laterally removable table structure, means for varylng the pitch or inclination of said table structure, separately supported breast and couch rolls, means for transferring said breast roll to said table structure for removal therewith, and means for e'ecting a separation from its support of one end of sald couch roll to permit the Stringing of a new wire.
6. In a Fourdrinier paper machine, a laterally removable table structure, a separately mounted suction couch roll, a wire normally enclosing said couch roll and table structure in operative position, and means permitting the Stringing of a new wire in place comprising means for supporting said suctionf couch roll from one end to leave the other end freely suspended, and means for supporting said table structure in laterally removed position;
7. In a Fourdrinier paper machine, the combination with a removable and lshaliable Fourolrinier table structure, of an overhang ing type couch roll adapted to be supported from its rear end to permit the insertion of a loop of avFourdrinier wire over the front end thereof.
8. In a Fourdrini'er paper machine, the combination with a removable, adjustable and shakable Fourdrinier tablel structure, of an overhanging type couch roll adapted to be supported from its rear end to permit the insertion of a loop of ay Fourdrinier wire over the front end thereof.
9. Ina Fourdrinier paper machine, the combination with a removable and adjustable Foutdrinier tablestructure, of an overhanging-type couch roll adapted to be supported from its rear end to permit the insertion of a loop of a Fourdrinier wire over the front end thereof.
