This invention has reference to hasp fasteners, and more particularly to hasp fasteners employed in connection with freight car doors. A
The primary object of the invention is to provide a fastener which will automatically adjust itself, so that it may align with the keeper with which the hasp fastener Vis used to insure against binding of the fa-stener should the door on which the hasp is supported, sag. when the same is in its inactive position. With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of partsand in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the hasp supporting plate, which is provided with openings to receive suitable securing screws, whereby the supporting plate may be secured to the door of a box car.
The reference character 6 designates a rod which is secured to the supporting plate 5, the rod being provided with an ofset portion 7 that extends beyond the front face of the plate, to provide a clearance for the hasp proper which is indicated by the reference character 8.
The hasp 8 is provided with an elongated opening 9 through which the rod 6 extends, the opening 9 being elongated so that the hasp may move transversely of the supportingA Serial No. 399,530.

As` shown, the hasp 8 is provided with a raised shoulder 11 adapted to rest against one 55 side of the keeper 10,`th`e shoulder being provided with an openingto receive the lock or seal used in connection'with car door fasteners. The free end of the hasp 8 is turnedinwardly asA at 12, providing a finger piece 6o Whichis spaced from the keeper 10, so-that a person may vgrip the finger piece and move the vhasp to its active or inactive position.
Openings are formed in the base 13 of the keeper, and provide means wherebysecuring screws may be positioned to secure the keeper against movement. Extending laterally from the supporting plate, is a rest 14 which is provided with an upstanding portion so arranged that the hasp 8 may be swung to a position between the upstanding portion and supporting plate, to hold the hasp in its inactive position and prevent damage to the hasp and its supporting rod, due to the hasp being jammed against the keeper, when the door is moved to its closed position.` y Y From the foregoing it will be obvious that 'due to this construction, the hasp may be lowered, so that the opening thereof through which the keeper extends, may be brought to a position directly over the keeper at all times regardless of whether or vrnot the door sags onits tracks, and thereby eliminating the necessity of raising the door by the use of a crowbar positioned under the lower edge thereof, which often becomes necessary when doors get out of alignment.

In a hasp for sliding closures, a supporting plate having bearing openings, a vertical rod, Y the ends of the rod being held in the bearing f openings, said rod having an voffset portion extending from the inner ends of the bearings, to restrict movement of the rod, a hasp having an enlarged end portion formed with an elon-V gated opening, extending throughout the length of the enlarged Vportion to receivefthe i rod, a keeper havingflat side faces, an apertured flange extending yfrom the hasp and4 adapted to lieagainst the keeper to receive a v 10Q lock positioned in the keeper, and a hook member extending upwardly from the sup- .porting plate to receive the hasp when the hasp is in its inactive position. i
