This invention relates to improvements in striking tools of the power-operated type adapted for use in connection with boring, punching and like machines wherein the striking body is mounted to move axially and cooperates with an independently movable anvil coacting with the tool.
The invention has for its object to provide means whereby the tool may be readily removed, adjusted or replaced without interrupting the operation of the implement whereby during such operation the tool is not subjected to the action of the striking body.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the anvil is prevented from rotating during removal or replacement of the tool.

Referring-to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a striking body which is mounted for axial movement in a guide sleeve 2 which latter is maintained in constant operation during the use of the implement by an electric drive motor mounted in the implement frame 3. The axially movable and rotatable anvil 4 is mounted in the frame 3 and coacts with an adjacent end of a tool 5. The mutually facing terminals of the striking body 1 and anvil 4 are provided with cam faces 6 and 7 which at the moment ing with inclined guide faces 10 are moved of contact between the two parts, effects re-. coil of the rapidly rotating striking body 1.

Y of the bod 1 is not arrested b en a ement A further object of the invention is the y y b g with the anvil 4, due to the disposal of the latter in a position removed from the path of the striking body, the outward striking movement of the latter is limited by the centrifugal bodies 8 coacting with the inwardly converging terminal walls 11 of the grooves or guide faces 10. On the other hand, if the anvil 4 is disposed in a position within the range of movement of the striking body the latter delivers a working stroke thereto.
The anvil 4 is normally retained in forwardly or outwardly projected position, during periods of inoperativeness of the implement, by the tension of a spring 12 confined between a guide part 13 and a bearing ring 14 coacting with bearing balls 15 which latter are partially received in a groove 16 formed in a contiguous part of the anvil 4.
Thus, the ring 14 constitutes both a bearing or abutment for the spring 12 and part of the bearing for the adjacent terminal of the anvil 14. The outward movement of the anvil is limited by a shoulder 17 coacting with an adjacent portion of the guide part 13. j
The shoulderl? is preferably inclined or of frusto-conical form, and the adjacent portion of the guide part 13 is correspondingly shaped so that when the anvil is moved outwardly under the influence of. the spring 12 the inclined shoulder 17 and cooperating portion 22 of the part 13 coacts to retard or brake the rotational movement of the anvil, such movement having been imparted thereto by its engagement with the rapidly rotating striking body 1.
