IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNlNG-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 79.480, dated July 4, 1876; application filed March 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. S. KETTERMAN, of Shannon,in the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Pruning- Shears, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of peculiarly-shaped cuttin g-blades, con meeting-link, and handles of pruning-shears, as will hereinafter be more fully described and definitely claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side view of my pruning-shears, showing the same open. Fig. 2 is a view of the opposite side, showing the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the shears.
A represents the cutting-blade, made nearly in triangular form, with the cutting-edge extending from the upper point a along the inner side, around the rounded corner b, and along the lower side of the blade to the point 01, as shown. At the point a the rear edge or side of the bladeis formed with a back outting-edge to the point e. At the rear corner of the blade A is a projecting arm, f, which is pivoted to the bottom on one side of a nearly U-shaped plate. The bottom or rounded part of this plate is marked B, and the two arms, respectively, B and B The inner edges of the arm 8 and base B are beveled for the cutting-blade A to work against. On a line with the arm B projects a shank, it, below the plate, which shank is securely fastened in a long handle, 0. D is a similar handle, provided at its upper end with a shank, m, which is pivoted to the end of the arm B and, by a link, it, connected with the blade A at the top of the arm f thereof.
In operation it will be seen that a powerful leverage is exerted on the blade A, so that the operator can easily cut 011 ordinary-sized branches, as well as smaller twigs, and the branch to be cut ofl' rests in the rounded portion of the plate B while the blade A cuts it.
The point a having a'back cutting-edge on the back of the cutting-blade, it may be used, when the shears are closed, as a knife when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the triangular cuttingblade A, having cutting-edges a b d and back cutting-edge from a to e, the U-shaped plate B B B with handle 0, the handle D, and shank m, with connecting-link n, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. S. KETTERMAN.
Witnesses:
JOHN KETTERMAN, HENRY BOWEN.
