PTTENT? 1 HENRY w. SMITH, on MENLO rARkmALIro NIA CORNER BRAQE Application filed January 9, 19129.
My invention relates to a brace suitable for use in a corner or at the uncture of several surfaces where it is desired that the surfaces geous features, some of which with the foregoing, will be set forth at length in the fol lowing descriptiomwhere I shall outline in full that form of myinvention which I have selected for illustration in the drawing accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said drawing I have shown of corner brace embodying my invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such type, as the invention, as set forth in the claims, may be e1n bodied in a plurality of forms.
Referring to said drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of the device of my invention as it appears at one .step in its one type Figure 2 is a perspective view ofa corner with a brace of my invention disposed therein.
Figure 3 is a cross section thru an assembled device of my invention.
Figure 4: illustrates another form of the corner brace of my invention with certain additional features of construction.
While the device of my invention may be conveniently formed from various materials I preferably stamp it from a sheet of metal portions bled.
of the desired weight.
As shown in Figure 1, a plate 6 is stamped out in such a shape as to facilitate the fabrication of the device. Thus I preferably form the plate 6 with a trapezoidal outline and, situated at the opposite ends of the base 7 of the trapezoidally shaped plate, I also provide lips 8. and 9 which are preferably rectangular in outline.
I erably bend the lips "lines la and 16, away the device may Preferably I provide Serial No. 331,219.
a plurality of teeth 11 which are formed integrally with the plate 6 and extend therefrom at substantially a right angle toone face thereof. Portions of the lips- 8' and 9 are removed, preferably by stamping, to prov1 de the slots12 and 13.
To form'the device nto a shape suitable for placing in corner,
'as in Figure 2, I pref- 8 and 9 along thedotted plate 6 from which the t'eethll project, until they are substantially at right angles to the plate. The lips 8'and 9, together with the corresponding triangular portions 17 and 18 ofthe plate .(igare' then preferably bent along.
the dotted lines 19 and 21towar'd-'eac h other and-away from that face of the plate 6 from which the teeth lljprojectflintil the triangular portions are at substantially right angles to the plate. The lips 8 and toward each other and are in contact with the edge of the plate The lip portions and 9 usually extend from that sideof the .60
the plateare then 'preferably'joined by some convenient method as welding. V
VhilefI have described the convenient formation of a form ofthe-deviceofmy invention that 'is'suitable for use in corners in which the surfaces are at right angles to each'other it is to be understood that'the several platesmay be so angularly disposed that be used in corners wherein the dihedral angle is other than degrees.
' I likewise form, of sheet metal, a staple for use'in connection with mydevice. As illustrated inFigure' 1, the preferably trapezoidallyl shaped sheet 26' is provided with suitableangular extensions '27. 'These portions 27 are bent back upon the sheet at substantially right angles to form a staplev with suflicient distance between the extensions as to permit the ready insertion into the slotted 12 and'13 of the body when assem- The assembledfdevic'e is shown in'Figure 2 placed in a corner il which it is desired to brace. The several teeth ll are forced into the surface of the wood by some convenient means as hammering so that when finally disposed the plate6 is in intimate contact with a surface 42 of the corner and-the lips 8 3O p the. several extensions 27 thereof, whlch are and 9 are flush with a surface 43 of the corner, To look the body in this position the staple 26 is now inserted in the slotted portions 12 and 13 of the lips 8 and 9 and driven home with a. hammer; The form of the teeth 11 and angular extensions 27 of the staple 26 is illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing for one form of the'device of my invention. The teeth and projections are preferably formed to insure that the device is positioned the corner.. 7
Another form of construction for the teeth 11 and the angular extensions 27 of the staple 26 is illustrated in Figure 4.
positively against the surfaces of one of said The plurality .ofserrations 28 formed on both the teeth and my hand. s HENRY W. SMITH.
' .on the staple insure against these projections readily Working their wayoutafterbeing positioned in a corner,
-. once inserted.
While Ihave indicated that the lip 0 tions 8 and '9 are joined preferably to the p 7 plate 6', this jointure maybe omitted, for
the device-is sufliciently stiff usually without it., The device when assembled and actively as in Fig. -2,.is so formedthat any tendency for the lip portions to vary from their approach pornormal position isresisted by the staple 26. Thus, a pressure v tending to make portion 9 tion 8 is. transmitted to the staple 26 and to in active; contact with the side43, and by the staple to the portion. 8 which is suitably braced to resist deflecting stresses. .wise a pressure tending to make the portions approach each other is resisted by the staple ,norma'lly in active contact with the surface 26 and the extensions 27 thereof, which are I claim 1. A brace for a. corner having surfaces forming a dihedral angle comprising a plate, ;a plurality of teeth to retain said plate in contact with a surface of'said corner, said teeth being formedintegrally with Likesaid plate and extending a material distance Y formed integrally contact with said other surface, said means therefrom, a lip integral with said plate and adapted to fit the other surface ofthe corner, a brace, formed integrally "with said plate and said lip, a second lip corresponding to said'first lip and similarly adapted to fit said other surfaceof said corner, a brace with said plate and said second lip, said lips having perforations therein, and means for retaining said lips in comprising a relatively slender plate having a plurality of material extensions extending therefrom atsubstantially 90 degrees there to and adapted to be disposed thru the perforations in each of said-lipsto retain said lips 1n contact with said other surface. 7 comprising a single sheet of material bent to form"dihedrally 2.
