Description
P. K. DEDERICK.
HAY-PRESS Patented. J'une13, 1876.
llhms'raur UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
PETER K. DEDERIOK, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN H'AV-PRESS ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,5 14, dated June 13, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, P. K. DEDERICK, of Albany, State of New York, have invented Improvements in Hay-Presses, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of improvements on that class of baling-presses for which Letters scribed in Letters Patent referred to, that inpitching the hay in front of the traverser it is impossible to prevent some of it from projectin g or bulging outside of its line of traverse; and in all other presses I have provided for this by constructing either the side of the press or traverser to yield, and thus prevent binding; but I now propose to construct the feeding side of the traverser with open spaces, sutficient to receive the hay overlapping the traverser, while the pressing is done by the remaining sections or ribs, and also to provide a guard over each rib to divide or separate the hay over it, and prevent binding on the rib.
to all sides.
The traverser 0 may be constructed in the usual manner and corrugated, or projections may be secured to it, of either iron or wood, so as to form the ribs; or it may be built in sections, and plates of metal passed across it, the-plates projecting so as to fill the box, or nearly so, and leave sufficient room between them to receive the hay overlapping the side of the traverser. The forward end or face of these ribs may be constructed square with the face of the traverser, or so as to form a point, as shown. The guards E have a face or receiving edge similar to that of the ribs, and are secured to the side of the press at or near where the traverser passes within the pressbox, and should be so set as just to pass the edge of the ribs and divide the hay.
in operation, the hay is pitched in front of the traverser G, and we will suppose a large share of the forkful projects from the press as the traverser enters the chamber; then the pressure would force the hay between the ribs D, and that overlapping the ribs would be divided by the guards E, and eventually forced between the ribs also, and retained in the press, when the traverseris withdrawn by improvements previously patented by me in this class of machines, and hence unnecessary to describe.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. The traverser provided with alternate ribs and spaces, for the purpose described.
2. The guards E, in combination with the traverser, provided with ribs or projections D, for the purpose set forth.
' PETER K. DEDERIGK.
