Description

Dec. 9, 1930. E. KENNEDY 1,784,238
COMBINED TEST T AND EXPANSION FITTING FOR DRAINAGE AND SOIL PIPES Filed Dec. 29. 1927 hi4 ATTO EY- Patented Dee. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD KENNEDY, OF NEW' YGRK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB TO THE KENNEDY-STEENER COB- v PORATION, F BRGNX COUNTY, NEW YORK COMBINED TEST T AND EXPANSION FITTING FOR DRAINAGE AND SOIL PI?ES Application filed. December 29, 1927. Serial No. 243,272.
This invention relates to a combined test T and expansion fitting for drainage and soil pipes, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this kind which will be high- H ly serviceable and convenient in practical use in facilitating the installation of plumbing in the course of erection of a building.
Heretofore, such test Ts and expansion fittings have been manufactured and applied in the form of separate units necessitating considerable manual labor in their application and also multiplying the number of joint connections where leakage may possibly occur. I therefore. propose to produce the test T and expansion fitting in the form of a single unit thereby materially reducing the cost of such devices and enabling the work to be tested Without interfering with the progress of building construction. It is another object of the invention to provide the improved fitting with means whereby a temporary supporting element may be associated therewith to support the drainage or soil pipe section while the expansion oint is being packed.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the combined test T and expansion fitting for soil and drainage pipes as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorporated in the .subjoined claims.
In the drawing, wherein I have shown H one simple and practical embodin'ient of the device. and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is a vertical sectional view show- M ing the end of the soil or drainage pipe supported within the expansion fitting in position to be packed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the packed joint and the temporary test connections with the T.
In the illustrated embodiment of the device the test T section and the expansion joint section with which the end of the soil pipe is adapted to be connected are produced in the form of a single integral casting having the cylindrical end portion 5 of greater internal diameter than the external diameter of the pipe 6 which is adapted to be fitted therein. The end section 5 of the device terminates in an outwardly extending annular flange 7 and adjacent to said flange the cylindrical wall is internally provided with an annular groove indicated at 8. Adjacent to the other end of the part 5, the wall thereof is provided at diametrically opposite points with the threaded openings 9 which areadapted to receive suitable plugs indicated at 10. The device also includes the test T section 11 which is relatively long and the wall of which is provided in one side with a threaded opening 12, said section 11 also being internally threaded at its lower end as at 18 for the connection of a joint member (not shown) therewith. Intermediate of the sections 5 and 11 of the device, the wall thereof is relatively thick to provide a short section of reduced internal diameter threaded as shown at 14. Between this threaded section and the wall of the part 5, an annular inwardly tapering surface 15 is formed.
The section 11 is also provided with the additional opening 11 in its wall for the connection of a vent pipe thereto.
In making a test, a cup shaped member 16 is inserted through the opening 12, the cylindrical wall of said member being externally threaded for engagement with the internal threads 1 of the fitting, said cup being provided centrally thereof with 'an ex tension 17 internally threaded to receive the coupling nipple 18 of the pipe 19 extending outwardly through the opening 12 and which is provided with a suitable uilve 20.
In applying the device, a rod or other supporting element indicated at 21 is insertedthrough the two openings 9 in the wall of the part 5 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and the end of the soil or drainage pipe 6 is then inserted within said part and supported upon this red, thereby spacing the lower end of the pipe with respect to the internal shoulder 15 of the fitting. his insures an adequate space below the pipe section 6 to permit of longitudinal expansion thereof relative to the fitting. Before inserting the pipe, a cap plate 22 is engaged over the pipe end. The
expansion packing material indicated at 23 is then inserted, between the wall of the pipe 6 and the Wall of the part as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, after which the plate 22 is positioned on the flange 7. This flange and plate are provided W1th registering openings to receive the fastening bolts indicated at 24, thereby preventing the packmg from working loose. The rod 21 ma then be withdrawn and the openings 9 closed by the insertion of the plugs 10.
By the provision of these combined expansion and test T fitting, the work may be tested in sections in the usual way Without interfering with the progress of erection of the building. After the test has been made, it is of course, understood that the pipe 19 is disconnected from the cup 16, and this cup is then unthreaded from the threaded section 14 of the wall of the fitting and removed through the opening 12. Thisopening is then tightly closed by means of a suitable plug.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, as well as the manner of application and use of my present invention Will be clearly and fully understood. It will be seen that by forming the expansion joint and test T fitting in the form of a single unit, the manufacturing cost of such parts may be appreciably reduced, and also the time and labor necessary in their installation reduced to a minimum. I have illustrated and described an embodiment of my present improvements which I have found to be very satisfactory in practical use. Nevertheless, it will be appreciated that the essential fea tures thereof might also be incorporated in various other alternative structures, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of making all such legitimate changes therein as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Iclaim: I i A method of forming a packed pipe joint of the one piece bell and spigot and test titv ting type to provide for limited expansion,
' comprising formingapertures in the side walls of the bell, inserting a rodtherein, introducing'the spigot end of a pipe into the bell until it seats on the rod, packing the space between the bell and the spigot, removing the rod, and closing the apertures with'screw threaded plugs. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereto.
EDWARD KENNEDY.
