UNIT VTWIN BED Application med December i, 192e. serial Ng. 323,153.
The invention relates to improvements in "beds and has particularreferencerto means disposed `in the structure of the standard double bed for rendering lsuch structure a 'unit twin-bed.
An object of the invention` resides in the providing of a standard double bed structure of either the metal frame type ofthe wood frame easement type carrying the box-spring transverse supporting slats, with a centrally disposed supporting member composed of two angle iron supporting bars, engaging in the first instance the frame ends of the metal bed.l and inthe second instance each of the lateral or transverse slats, said bars' being Y attached together by means ofplates to form a unit supporting structure, andof disposing upon each section a box-spring and mattress, Vto produce substantially two separate but yet attached twin beds.
VAnother object of the invention lies in the producing of a twin bed structure out of the ordinary type of standard double bed, Wherein, by the utility of distinct box springs and 1 mattresses for each section ofthe bed two persons may use the bed, yet utilizing less t space than the double beds, havea result of a separate or independent bed for each per-l son so using it, and yet when made up Ain disuse provide in appearance arunit structure of vthe standard double bed type.
Ano-ther object ofthe structure anticipatesvv a serviceable hospital bed since by disposing inthe usual type of bed the inventionl involved herein, it will provide a bed `structure whereon a patient may be quickly and angle ironbars `8 and@ attachedv together in readily moved from one section to the other thereof, eliminating entirely any possible orv certainly anexcessive amount of disturbing such patient. Again the invention may be employed in a manner wherein the supporting Stringer bars may be disposed upon any type of bed, either of an article of new manu.-
fac'ture, or rupon the standard type of bedA of the general class `of standard article of manufacture;
In the following I describe the essential embodiment of the invention the features f thereof being more clearly defined hereind after in the claims.
kIn the'drawings Fig. l is artoplplan vierir of the standard metalbed, showing 'the dis- `positionvthereonvof the supporting Stringer bars,`for rendering such kdouble bed aunit twin bed structure; Fig. 2V is a ltransverse sec-4 y. tional view'of unit twin-bed structure, assembledffrom,thestandard *double bed type, and showing the disposition thereon of the individual boX springs'and separate mattresses' therefor; Fig. 3 is a perspective vview ofthe double. StringerY supporting bars *or angleiron supports; Fig. d is a crossl sectional'view of a bedv of any type madein-to a hospital vbed employing the invention as vdisclosed herein;Fig. 5 is van enlarged de-l Vtailiviewfof the bed when converted into a unit twin-bed, showing how the same may be 1 madeup to vprovide in appearance the usual formof'standard double bed; and Fig. 6 is a detail-cross sectional view of the unit bed converter Vsustaining.; bars illustrating the manner-in which "said bars y'are fastened .togetherfto .provide the' unit Stringer member.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar "parts throughout the several views.
. In. the drawings l designates the standard 'typeof double bed framey ofthe metal form having a head Apiece 2, a foot piece 3, side supyporting members'll and end supports 5^. The
wooden easement type-of bed ,comprises'thex slats 7 for 'supporting thebox spring'of a bed structure. j *Y V- To render a standard type of bed of any form a unit twin-bed, central supporting bed 'iframe/the? p11-@renting lateral' displace- .L emilie rirfler'jtp'rendersaid ,Structure standardequipmentrfor any type of bed, saidr lsamehead piece 2, foot pieceV 3 and side'meml. bers'o,V and one or more transverse supporting i type et double'bed :into ay lbed coniposedof -V two or twiirbeds oiz separate utility, yet constituting a'single structure.
ln Fig. 5 of the drawings the bed structure.
shows a unit twin-bed assemblage made up as the ordinary double bed form each section thereof being provided with separate coverlets, and the latter in turn being covered'by a single spread.
ln Fig. 4 yof thed'rawings the invention is `applied'to alliospital type oibed and shows the ease with which a' patient reclining there' on may beshiftefd from one part to the other,
randthe mattress and'supportingsprings andr framesV changed without. the :noticeable disA comfort toA one reclining thereon.
" The invention maybe varied in many ways without departing from thevscope of the invention. c
By making ythe bed converter sustaining member of two separated angle-irons, as
shown in Figure 3, a rigid, light andV ,economvical Stringer is provided, :the vertical portions of which hold the box springs 12 apart by the box Springs are verter, siibstalntially as .described bars of the bedstead and upon the laterally extending members ot' the converter, Wherepermanently held in providing a narrow the edges of the bed spacedk apart relation spacev between them for clothes.
5. v,ln combination with av double bed having sideandend supports, a duplex converter adapted toi-est on said end supports and parallel with the sides of the bedstead, independent box springs .mounted on said side supports and converter, the latter having means for holding the box springs permanently apart to provide a space betweenV them, and separable interacting means betiveen the ecnverter andend supports ofthe bed for pi'eventing .lateral displacement of said con- Iln testimony whereof, FRANCiEs M. and the horizontal vpo'rtionsfof which support said springs at one side.'` is provided between the the duplex Stringer into which the edges of the' bed clothing, covering the independent Moreover, a space mattresses, may dro-p, avoiding bulk of material along thecenter of the bed. e Such space isshown in all the figures of the drawings.
