This invention relates particularly to fuses of the expulsion type in which the fuse cartridge is carried by the hinged cover of a fuse box to be disconnected from the line terminals when the cover is opened and has as a primary object the provision of contacts so constructed as to permit perfect seating thereof in their respective clips.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a fuse of the character described in which one of its contacts is square and the other round whereby the contacts readily adjust themselves within their respective clips to insure a perfect electrical contact.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a fuse of the character described in which one of its contacts is threadcd onto a tube carried part to impinge the fuse element therebet-ween, the position of rest of the contact, with respect to the tube, var ing depending on the thickness of the element,
and the other or fixed contact being round to 1 permit the contacts to adjust themselves with their respective clips to insure agood electrical contact.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed ac cording to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view f the inner face of a fuse box cover with my improvec fuse mounted thereon, parts thereof being broken away and in section, and
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken through Figure 1 on the plane of line 22.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 designates the cover of a fuse box, not shown,
which is hingedly connected therewith by pivot pins 6 extending from its sides at its lower end and which has suitably secured thereto a pair of spaced, substantially U shaped clips 7 and 8, by which a fuse 9 is detachably mounted on the cover to be con nectcd with line terminals carried by the fuse box (not shown) the terminals engaging the clips '2 and 8 when the cover is closed. The clip 7 has an auxiliary clip 10 positioned therein, the sides or arms of which having a portion thereof arcuately shaped, at .11t
The fuse which in the present instance is of the expulsion type consists of a tube of insulating material 12 ha ing a contact 13 secured at its upper end which is round in transverse section with flanges Mat its upper and lower ends and is provided with an upwardly cxtended exteriorly threaded portion 15 on which a cap member 16 is threaded, a fuse ele-' ment lZhaving oneend impinged between the end of the portion 15 and the cap 16 being positioned within the tube.
The element 17 extends downwardly through the tube, passes outwardly of the lower end thereof and is directed upwardly along the outer face of the tube to have its extreme end 18 electrically connected with a contact 19. The contact 19 is tubular with the major portion of its outer periphery square in cross section, and has its upper portion threaded onto a flange 20 formed on a collar 21 which is suitably secured to the tube at a point spaced from its adjacent end.
The lower portion of the collar 21 is tapes in gly reduced, as at 22, and th'e'c-ontact 19 provided with an inwardly extended flange 23 which is correspondingly taperingly bored, as at 24:, to provide parallel tapered faces which approach each other as the contact 19 is threaded onto the flange 20 to impinge the element therebetween. A groove 25 in the flange 2O permits the end of the element to extend therethrough.
As will be readily apparent, the position of rest of the contact 19, with respect to the tube, after being threaded onto the flange 20 to impinge the fuse element between-the tapered faces varies, depending on the thickness of the element; this, however, .does not i affect the perfect seating of the contacts in their respective clips as but one contact has straight sides, the contact 13 being round to conform with the auxlliary clip readily permits the fuse to adjust itself to form a perfect electrical contact.- Longitudinal positioning of the fuse is facilitated by the flanges 14L formed onthe contact 18- and which arespace-da:partadistance to receive therebetween the clips 7 and 10;
If desired an outer tube 26 having vent apertures 27 may be extended from the contact 19 to enclose the lower portion of the tube and the upwardly directed part of the element 17 as will be readily apparent.
