CLOSURE FASTENER Filed March 20. 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Patented Au 26,. 1930 BRUNO WILLIAIVI WILLIG, OF SAN ANGELO, TEXAS CLGS'URE FASTENER Application filed March 20, 1929. Serial No. 348,540.
This invention relates to closure fasteners and has more particular reference to the type of closure or lid which is used in association with a water meter box, although the improvements are applicable to other types provided at a diametrically opposite side with a keyactuated latch for engaging the adjacent portion of the ledge, whereby to securely hold the cover in place.
In carrying out the invention, it is my aim to generally improve upon structures of this class by providing an arrangement which may be expeditiously manipulated in a satisfactory and dependable manner.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the structure.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 3 is a central sectional view.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the improved retaining latch.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail elevational view of the especially designed operating key.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the annular rim is designated by the reference character 6 and this is provided with an endless inwardly offset supporting ledge 7, with which the peripheral edge portion of the bevelled edged cover or lid 8 is in engagement. This lid is provided on its bottom with intersecting diagonally arranged reinforcing ribs 9. On one peripheral edge it is provided with a hooked lug 10, for 45 engagement with the ledge as seen in Figure and advantages of the invention.
3. At diametrically opposite sides it is provided with a triple-slot key hole 11, with which the key 12, (seen in Figure 5) is cooperable.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 4, it will be seen that the reference character 13 designates a latch. This comprises a ring like element 14 pivotally mounted on the under side of the cover as at 15.
At one side this is formed with an ofiset retaining finger 16, adapted to be engaged with the ledge seen in Figure 2. On the opposite side it is formed with a plurality of operating teeth 17 with which the cooperating elements on the key 12 are engageable. As seen in Figure 2, a plurality of stops 18, 19, and 20 are provided, for aiding in dependable operation of the latch and ey. r
In practice, the shank of the key is inserted through the key hole and the portions thereon are engaged with the teeth 17 of the latch 18. Then the latch is turned in a manner to engage the finger 16 with the ledge 7. Preparatory to this, the lug 10 is engaged 7o beneath the diametrically opposite side of the ledge. Consequently, the cover maybe latched in place in a dependable manner. After this, the key is withdrawn.
A careful consideration of the description in connection with the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding of the construction, operation and features Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of details falling within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
I claim:
In a structure of the class described, in combination, a rim provided with an annular ofiset ledge, a bevelled edged cover detachably seated against said ledge, said 90 cover being formed on its under side with a peripheral hooked lug engageable with said ledge, a latch pivotally connected to the under side of the cover at a diametrically opposite point, said latch comprising a, ring like element formed with peripheral teeth and also formed with an ofl'set ledge engaging finger, said cover having a key hole for passage of the key, for cooperation with said teeth for actuating said latch.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
BRUNO WILLIAM VILLIG.
