The object of this invention is to provide a claw hammer with manifold features which are useful particularly for those who are engaged in the opening and closing of boxes for the packing and shipping of goods, and for others who may need atool with a wider range of usefulness than the usual type of clawhammer. A further object is to impart bal ance to the hammer by providing beyond the line of the face sufiicient weight sothat its p poll from the hammer face isa curved nailmomentum will substantially balance the momentum of the handle, and when striking a blow the momentum of substantially the entire hammer will be absorbed at the point where the blow is delivered and none will be transmitted to the hand so that the hand will be? relieved of. all shock; Other objects are to provide a hammer which is suitable for extracting nails of a considerable range of sizes and from a position,v as in a corner, which is inaccessible to a clawofthe usual. types A further obj ectisto provide means for bendmg a. nail from which the head has 'brokenoff so 'that it can be engaged by the claw and extracted. A further object 'is'to provide a hammer by which a nail may be completely extracted inone operation even when of such length that with a claw hammer of the usual type a block would need to be set under the hammer after partial extraction. A further object is-to provide. a hammer with achisel edge transverse to the axis of thefeye through the poll and suitably disposed for use in trimming the edge of a board or for use asa scraper for removing oldinarkmgs.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings which forms a part ofthis description,
. Fig. 1 is a perspective of a hammer head embodying this, invention, a portion of the and A I 1 1 Fig; 3 is a longitudinal section through the hammer head.v V W I The hammer head comprises the customary .poll 10 which is elongated and the eye through b I ox.
which is tapered slightly towithin three quarters of" an inch of the outer end from which point it is fiared slightly; In the sides of this flared portion are grooves 11 which fulcrum shoulder13' about which the hammer when set against a board for the purposeof ullinga nail. 7 On the opposite side of the can be rocked through a considerable angle engaging port-ion 14 whichprojects from 'the poll at its outer end wholly beyond the axis X--X of the face, and it is not curved as much as the usual claw of a claw-hammer so that the major part of the weight which itaddsto the hammerhead is beyond the axis of the face and its momentum serves to balance themementum ofjthe handle to such an extent that. none'ofthe shock of arresting themotion as a" weigh-tbeyond the axisof the face is not suf rnail is'stru ck will be felt by the hand. This] :fi'cient to balance the weight of the handle and V bring the center of gravity into the axis, for what is requlred is to balance the momentum,
which for any part is measured by the prodnot of the "weight of the. part multiplied by r I the square of itsvelocity, Ahamm'er in strikmg a blow traversesa curvedpath so that its outer portion has aconsiderable velocity com:v paredlwit'h the handle and brings the pointof momentum balance, known as the center of I percussion,.sufliciently'close to the axis of the 1 face to eliminate shockto the hand.
A ichi's'e'l edge 15. is. provided at the Ou er end of the curved nail-engaging portion and e the eye through the. poll. Since the curvature of the nail-engaging portion is less than i V is customary, and preferably limited aswshown to approximately forty-five degreesy this chisel edge is in a suitable direction for chipping away the edge, of a board suchjasthetongue or groove at the side of-a box when the cover, afterhaving'been nailedon, v is found toproject beyond, the edge ofthe this edge is transverse tothe axis Y-Y- of" I I Provision is made for nail extraction with-' ,o'ut' breaking the chisel edge, by thenaiL' engagingnotchof thefusual'claw. Instead a slot 16 is provided in the curved portion.
This slot has an enlarged portion 17 near the end remote from the poll which is sufficient for any ordinary nail head to pass therethrough. From this opening the sides converge toward the poll and make an acute angle with the upper face after the manner of the usual claw so that the shank of a nail can be engaged. under the head for extraction, but the sides do not come together at a point and the heads of small nails and brads cannot be engaged. Instead the sides run into an eye 18 at the end nearest the poll. This eye is large enough to receive the shank of a nail when the head has been broken off and affords a means for engaging and bending over the shank so that it can be taken hold of and extracted. From the main enlarged portion the sides of the slot converge to a point 19 away from the poll to provide a means for engaging and extracting small nails and brads. All of these instrnmentalities for extracting nails are part of one unitary slot for convenience of manufacture and so that the forming dies may be of a rugged character.
In addition to the central curved nail-- engaging portion there are nail-enga ing side claws 20 in which the outer sides 0 the 30 claws are flush with and protected by the sides of the central nail-engaging portion beyond the points of the claws, so that when the hammer is laid down these claws will not scratch the surface on which it is laid. These are provided for extracting nails from walls at points close to floors, or from floors close to walls and from similar confined places Where the nails are inaccessible to the other means for extraction.
0 I claim,-
In a hammer, the combination with a helve-receiving poll, of a curved nail-head engaging portion terminating in a chisel edge notched at the sides to form nail-engaging side claws in which the outer sides of the claws are protected by the sides of the curved nail-engaging portion and the chisel eilge is beyond the notches for the side 0 aws.
